In Training: Marathon Weekend 2015 (Dopey Challenge)! **COMPLETE**

Love the Week 3 post! I'm a casual, somewhat free-spirited person, but when it comes to my food before, during and after a run I get all TYPE A!! I've got to have everything all planned out and if I have to substitute items or try something new it leaves me very anxious. My routine sounds much like yours.

Awesome thread!
Thank you! :) I'm Type A all the time...haha! :goodvibes
Sometimes I think housework is almost as much of a work out as any other kind of "actual" work out.
I totally agree! It's so satisfying, too. :goodvibes
I have yet been able to get in more than 3 miles on a dreadmill. You are doing awesome!
Honestly, if I did have a TV to watch I don't know if I would be able to do it! :faint: I think 5 miles is about my limit...somehow while training for the Princess Half in 2011 I got sick of the snow and decided to do one of my long runs on the treadmill - a 12.5-mile long run!!! I have no idea how I did that. I think back on it and wonder if I was momentarily possessed or something! :lmao: There's no way I would make it through now.
And all this is why ultimately we decided to opt out of registering for more than just the half. Yowza! That does hurt the bank account!!
I know. :headache: But hey, I paid my credit card off yesterday so now it's like it never even happened! :cool1: That's what I'll keep telling myself, anyway. This is part of why I didn't sign up for Dopey last year, because I could see myself wanting to be a legacy runner...and I wouldn't want to feel like I had to spend that kind of money every year (among other issues that would come with being a legacy runner).
That discount is at least something... somehow I think it should be more.
AGREED! :worship:
It is fun to get surprises in the mail...but not if you feel they are a waste. I do just the graze box subscription and have been pretty happy with it. I get to say the types of things I like/don't like. So far it works pretty well. If you are interested in trying the graze box... let me know. I think you still need to have a referral code to get in.
I might have to try graze box. :confused3 I will let you know if I decide to do it! I started StrideBox and StitchFix at the same time and with StitchFix I can send back what I want and leave feedback. So even though the subscriptions were for different things I did have a direct comparison, and that made it easier to pull the plug on StrideBox.
I am pretty excited too. Weird, right? I mean it isn't like it was unexpected...but still was pretty cool!!
Ahhhh, I know!! We've got our spots locked in...maybe that's why??
The mental side of running is so tricky. I almost find I don't trust myself. Last week... didn't really trust myself. Was I sick...being a baby? In the end... past is past...week is done and nothing more I can do about it. Just hoping to push on and be stronger about it all.
Very wise. ::yes:: You're right that it's a fine line between sick/injured and maybe just not feeling 100% perfect. It's hard sometimes. :confused3
:goodvibes I love that shirt. It's my favorite runDisney race shirt I have because it's the only one I have that is a woman's cut! That should change going forward though. :thumbsup2
You did amazing!

Sounds like you had a great time! Don't you love runs like that?
Thanks!! Yes, I do!! I'm still holding on to that one! :goodvibes
I have never tried them... do you like them?
Yes, I LOVE Sweaty Bands. The big downside is that they are pricey (about $15 apiece) but the ones I just got were on sale for $7 apiece. :goodvibes They have a lot of sales. I cannot recommend them enough - they really stay in place.
10 miles is a great distance! Good job!!!

I have not done a marathon... but 10 is a nice distance for me. I tend to hit about mile 8 and just get in weird sort of place where it doesn't feel like I need to stop any more...at least this is how it is during training. Now...during a race not so much.
Thanks! I agree, it's not too long...not too short...

...totally agree with the race vs. training mentality though!
I can't wait to read all about how your race goes!
Eek, starting to get nervous!!
I hope you had a nice Easter!
Thanks, I did! Dinner at my aunt's house, pretty low-key. Sounds like you had a nice Easter, too! :goodvibes Except for the snakes and the scraped knee!!!
And... congrats on your cruise stuff! Sounds like the plans for that are really coming together. :thumbsup2
Thanks! I am soooo excited!
I can't believe how many of your trip reports have missed! Stupid actual life messing with my internet time!
BOOOOO :teeth:
Interesting with your StrideBox- when reading these posts and seeing what was inside my brain added the sound effects that they play when someone goes over $1 on the wheel on Price is Right. It seems like you'd be better off just going to RunOn and spending $15 on stuff you actual have an interest in trying instead of leaving it to them!
Haha!! Your sound effects are funny! I definitely think I would have liked it more if I could have left feedback or sent back what I didn't want. :confused3 RunOn sounds interesting, I'll look into that! Thanks!
I need to offer caution for Remy- since people are puffing it up as better than V&A- we've done V&A, Remy and the chef's table at Napa Rose and Remy's at the bottom of the list for the three food stars of Disney dining. My husband actually left the dinner still hungry. Don't get me wrong- everything was delicious and it is totally worth the upcharge and the views and restaurant are all amazing and you WILL like it- but those expectations need to be lowered so you can appreciate it for what it actually is.
My favorite meal onboard was the Palo brunch!
Thank you for your warning! I was talking it over with Will last night and neither of us really believe that anything will ever top V&A (in the realm of Disney dining, that is). Glad to hear a good review of Palo brunch, I am sooo looking forward to that!! :goodvibes

Hi Shannon :) I have only read the first couple dozen posts of yours, and am looking forward to getting caught up, and then following along. popcorn:: Thanks for sharing interesting and entertaining highlights of your journey!

Hi! :goodvibes Thanks for checking out my report!!
Teri (your fellow in: Dopey, BWV, yoga, garden, accomplished WDW race course bathroom locator)
This is awesome! :rotfl2: Although I haven't been to a yoga class in a little awhile...:guilty: I really want to find a way to fit in at least one class per week! Just can't find the time.

Regarding yoga, here, too, I can relate: I used to do yoga regularly, but it has been years since I have done any more than ever now-and-then. I keep urging myself to find a way to fit it back into my schedule. It is great/helpful/enjoyable in many ways -- and when I am reminded of this (like in your posts) I tell myself "I have got to start doing yoga again!!"

I was also telling my husband the other day I wish we could find time to fit in some yoga. My flexibility and core are just not great. But, I have no idea when we would fit it in. We've got a P90X yoga DVD and we talked about trying to find some evenings where we could just do it at home.

I get into these 3-6 month-long periods where I'm all about yoga and will go 2-3 times per week. Then I just stop (like now). It's weird. :confused3

Have you ever done that DVD? I have it too but have never tried it. My brother told me it's 90 minutes long!

I have a really nice yoga studio less than 10 minutes from my house, and when I was in my most recent "OMG I LOVE YOGA!" phase I bought a 15-class pass. I still have 14 classes remaining! :guilty: So I need to make sure to use those this year!

Sounds like we could all use an extra hour, or two or three, everyday.

I need to improve my flexibility and core, too. Big time. I write "yoga" into my training plan, and when the time roles around to do it, I frequently feel too rushed, or like I have done enough with my running, or just unmotivated. :confused3 It is kind of hard to have to be disciplined about everything, and so the less necessary things (in this case, yoga) often get 'cut' from the to-do list. Still, yoga has such fantastic benefits. Maybe we can each/all find a way to get back into it. If any of you have some :wizard:, please send it my way, and I will reciprocate :)

P90X yoga DVD... do you recommend it?

I've never tried the P90X yoga DVD. We just have it. :rotfl: I don't have 90 minutes to spend I DO know that.

I'll get it out and see how it seems and report back.

That would be great! I understand that it may take a while to find even a few minutes to check it out ;) Whenever you do, I would like to hear your review. Thank you :)

My brother (back when he was doing P90X) LOVED the yoga DVD. I think because it was a lot more challenging than he expected, so he really wanted to work hard and improve at it. But yeah...90 minutes.

Do you think once a week would do any good? Or is this too much time in between to see any improvements? I don't have any idea myself.

I appreciate this discussion. You all have me thinking of a more do-able plan than "I must do yoga for one hour every morning." I think if I have a leader to follow (dvd for me, since there are no classes nearby), and put it into a schedule of maybe once or twice a week, I might stick with it.

The P90X schedule has the yoga DVD once a week. :confused3 Not that Tony Horton is the all-knowing yoga god, but there you have it.

Honestly, if I can fit it in with running, it's going to be MAYBE once a week. Possibly twice per week but that's pretty unlikely. Getting ready for these races is my top priority, and I wouldn't, say, drop a running or strength training day in favor of yoga. :confused3 I also don't really want to double up on workouts too much either because I don't want to spend like 2 hours a day working out! I already have long run days for that! :faint:

Just discovered your thread and have enjoyed reading through it. I really want to set the goal to do the half marathon, so I am going to start slowly training and hopefully can do it by 2016. I am sure I'll pick up lots of pointers following along with you. :)

I go once a week to a 90 minute hot yoga class the day after my long run. I LOVE it! It really helps stretch the muscles. I'm improving, probably not as much as I would going more often, but right now running is my priority and its a good stretch day. I have 5 passes left, not sure if I want to continue during the hot summer.

Dessert - Chocolate Souffle! :lovestruc

Drooling!!! We haven't ate dinner at Palo in YEARS. I might have to consider it again!

Big plans for the evening though - dinner at Remy! A new experience for both of us! I didn't go to Remy last time, and I've heard it's better than Victoria & Albert's - quite a claim! We ate at V&A for the first (and definitely not last) time in January, so we'll see how Remy stacks up! This is another upcharge, but if it's as good as people say it is I think it'll be totally worth it.

I am thinking about doing Remy dinner as well. Haven't tried that yet. We did the Remy brunch with the champagne pairing and it was so amazing! I'm sure dinner will be as well!

We'll kick off the morning with brunch at Palo - another new experience! I've heard great things about this brunch and I'm soooo excited to try it.

You are sure to love it. We have never missed a Palo brunch ever since the first time we tried it!

- Magical Express from our hotel to the airport...we're planning on using Disney transfers and the only way we can get to port early is to actually go from the airport, to the hotel, to port. It'll be a lot of bus time but if we just take the transfer from our hotel I think we won't actually get to port until, like 1PM or something. Not good! So I need to call the Magical Express people to get that added. I tried to do it about a month ago and they said I need to wait until the week we travel to do it. Oooooookay? :confused3

Another idea... We like to reserve Happy Limo to pick us up at the resort and drive us to Port Canaveral. Its about a wash cost wise for the 4 of us, but might be worth it for just 2 to have everything be on your schedule. They can also bring you to a store where you can pick up that water.

- Book a Mixology class...this can only be done on embarkation day. For $15 you get 5 drinks, and you learn how to make them! Sounds like a great deal to me! :teeth:

Mixology is so much fun! I'll do it again. We tried the wine and chocolate tasting and I didn't like that one. I'm looking forward to trying other classes!

Now... maybe that could help me. If I had a movie to watch.. maybe then I could zone out and just watch and run. Can popcorn be a running fuel popcorn::

I love it! :rotfl2: Seriously though... I agree. I pay mine each month and so once that is done it is done. Unfortunately both the avengers and the WDW half fell in the same billing cycle. :confused3 Good thing I didn't register for more.

And I also hear ya on legacy. I have already decided I will not sign up for any other new races. (ok, well any new ones that I don't have an interest in like Star Wars) I just don't want to have to maintain any more. ToT and Avengers will keep me quite busy.

I might have to try graze box. :confused3 I will let you know if I decide to do it! :goodvibes I love that shirt. It's my favorite runDisney race shirt I have because it's the only one I have that is a woman's cut! That should change going forward though. :thumbsup2

I hope they do a woman's cut for the ToT. 2 years and I have yet to have a shirt that I can wear. Both years they were enormous big...so dh got them. Princess 2013 was a great shirt and I wear it on a LOT Of runs. Then the WDW half... woman's cut. :cool1:

Eek, starting to get nervous!!

Personally, I am over the snakes... my son's inlaws.. well they are new to this family and the fact that snakes come with the group. I think it was hard on them. Ugh though... snakes and critters.

:thumbsup2 I am seriously going to try to re-work my schedule to fit in an occational yoga class.
Drooling!!! We haven't ate dinner at Palo in YEARS. I might have to consider it again!
That was seriously one of my favorite things I did on the cruise. Loved it!
I am thinking about doing Remy dinner as well. Haven't tried that yet. We did the Remy brunch with the champagne pairing and it was so amazing! I'm sure dinner will be as well!
I'm sure we'll try the Remy brunch at some point :) Some of my friends did it on the cruise I went on in September and it sounded sooooo good.

Oh good, glad to hear it's great! :)

Loved the Mixology class we did! Our group was big enough that we had a private session in Pink! So much fun.
Now... maybe that could help me. If I had a movie to watch.. maybe then I could zone out and just watch and run. Can popcorn be a running fuel popcorn::
When I'm there in the mornings I always catch the last half-hour of the local news and the beginning of the Today Show. At home it's nice because I can pick out a DVD or put on HGTV. :)

I could totally see myself choking on a popcorn kernel while running. But popcorn is just so delicious...
I love it! :rotfl2: Seriously though... I agree. I pay mine each month and so once that is done it is done. Unfortunately both the avengers and the WDW half fell in the same billing cycle. :confused3 Good thing I didn't register for more.
Ouch! That's rough! One this most recent cycle we had the upcoming cruise paid off, the deposit for next year's cruise AND my Dopey registration...among other things. :scared1: It was BAD.
And I also hear ya on legacy. I have already decided I will not sign up for any other new races. (ok, well any new ones that I don't have an interest in like Star Wars) I just don't want to have to maintain any more. ToT and Avengers will keep me quite busy.
Are you legacy for ToT?? I didn't know that!

I do think it would be fun, just to get the recognition and the little gifts. It's amazing to me that there are perfect 20s (21s?!) out there for the marathon and upcoming perfect 10s for Goofy. Like, they never got injured? Never had something come up last-minute that they couldn't make the trip? Just crazy that the scheduling even worked out for that long AND they still wanted to do it.

The funny thing is, I try to avoid inaugural events (just so they can get the kinks out and I don't have to be the guinea pig!) and I'm not super interested in Star Wars...but if they announce a Star Wars half I'm pretty sure I'll sign up for that one. My brother REALLY wants to do it ("TELL ME THE MINUTE THEY ANNOUNCE A STAR WARS RACE, I AM 150% THERE!!!!! ZOMG!!!!!!!) and since he's not running this year I would want to run with him.
So you like Stitchfix more? I have heard very little about it.
I do - you basically pay $20 per month for a stylist to pick out clothes for you. They sent you 5 pieces, you keep/pay for what you don't want and send the rest back. The $20 you pay upfront per month goes toward the purchase of the clothes you decide to keep. Before it starts you fill out a questionnaire with your sizing information and likes/dislikes so they know what to pick. After you get the stuff you go online again and say what you're keeping, what you're not keeping, and why - THAT is the key for me, that I can give feedback and that I don't have to keep what I don't want. During my first "fix" I only kept one item, but for my most recent one I kept 3...almost kept all 5 (if you keep all 5 you get 25% off the purchase price).

It's been fun. The first month's item I kept (a wrap dress) was probably something I would have picked on my own, but the items I kept this month (3 tops) were definitely not things I would have tried on, on my own. But I loved them! So it's forcing me to try different clothes, which is good.

The one thing I'm not sure of is if they'll ever send me pants that fit. I have a..hmm...curvy figure (okay, I have a big butt) and they sent me these really cute skinny jeans the first month, and I could NOT get them on. So sad! So I asked for no pants the next months, but maybe I'll try again at some point!

Wow, I'm writing a freaking novel here! :rotfl2:
Could be...especially since the spots flew. Can you believe it is full???!!!!
No!!!! I didn't realize the half was full too! I expected the 10K to sell out and maybe the 5K since so many slots go to Dopey runners, but I did NOT expect Dopey and the half to sell out on the first day! Wow!
I hope they do a woman's cut for the ToT. 2 years and I have yet to have a shirt that I can wear. Both years they were enormous big...so dh got them. Princess 2013 was a great shirt and I wear it on a LOT Of runs. Then the WDW half... woman's cut.
Was that not an option when you signed up? I'm so excited - Wine & Dine has women's cut shirts! Woohoo! That will be my first (hopefully) flattering shirt since the 2011 Princess Half shirt. I'm with you, I almost never wear my other ones (2 marathon, 1 half marathon, 1 Goofy, 1 Wine & Dine, 3 5K unisex t-shirts). :(
Do you have long hair or short? I am considering cutting mine but would still want a band...
Long, about 1-2 inches past my shoulders. I have short layers (which I HATE and am trying to grow out) that don't always stay in place, so the bands help with that.
You will do great!!!
Thanks!! I hope so...!!!
Personally, I am over the snakes... my son's inlaws.. well they are new to this family and the fact that snakes come with the group. I think it was hard on them. Ugh though... snakes and critters.
I think I'm with your in-laws! I'm such a wimp!

Are you legacy for ToT?? I didn't know that!

:rotfl: as legacy as 2 years is. ;) But yes... this will mark 3 years. I have a goal of 5....after that we will see. Given that dh and I will have the avengers half that we also will be trying for legacy with... I could see letting go of the ToT in a couple years. Then again... I do so love fall in WDW. It may be terribly hot...but food and wine makes it so cool!!

Is there recognition and gifts? I know the perfect princesses last year got something... but I wonder if they do that for each race? To be perfect for 20 years... :scared1: Can you imagine?

The funny thing is, I try to avoid inaugural events (just so they can get the kinks out and I don't have to be the guinea pig!) and I'm not super interested in Star Wars...but if they announce a Star Wars half I'm pretty sure I'll sign up for that one. My brother REALLY wants to do it ("TELL ME THE MINUTE THEY ANNOUNCE A STAR WARS RACE, I AM 150% THERE!!!!! ZOMG!!!!!!!) and since he's not running this year I would want to run with him.

There were some kinks that first year at ToT for sure. (the week being in September I think was a major one) I hope there are none at the avengers....

The fact you had a lot to say about it shows me how much you enjoy it! :thumbsup2

It is all crazy. I really wish I had been thinking and signed up for the 5k... too late this year. (again)

For the ToT both years they were unisex. I can't remember if at registration this year we had to pick female or male.

Long, about 1-2 inches past my shoulders. I have short layers (which I HATE and am trying to grow out) that don't always stay in place, so the bands help with that.

I will have to take a closer look at the bands. I have such a hard time with things staying on my head... but I need the hair to stay out of my face.

Thanks!! I hope so...!!!

:cheer2::cheer2:

I think I'm with your in-laws! I'm such a wimp!

Oh, I am a wimp too. I may say I am kinda over it... but I still don't hold them and am certainly cautious when I know the are out and being held. I just no longer freak out at the notion of them. ;)

Wow, gone for a few weeks and so much going on. I can't say how much I enjoy your posts...they motivate me to be better in my training. I am in for Dopey this year (had to defer last year) and have started training. My real trouble comes with trying to do some cross/strength training. I know I need it as I had to defer last year from a sever case of hip bursitis. So, stretching, stregthening are really important.

I am another sweatyband fan! They really do stay on and not slip on your head. They don't really wick moisture like the bondibands, but until the bondibands get wet they slide all over the place. So, I sometimes switch, if I know it will be humid and sweaty I use the bondiband. Otherwise, it is sweatybands!

So jealous of your cruise...I have yet to do a disney cruise. I really want to do the 4 or 5 day that makes 2 stops at Castaway Cay. Just have to find the time and money!!

I'm sure they'll do something for ToT #5. :confused3 Totally agree, WDW in the fall is pretty awesome!
Is there recognition and gifts? I know the perfect princesses last year got something... but I wonder if they do that for each race? To be perfect for 20 years... :scared1: Can you imagine?
I feel like they must save the bigger stuff for every 5 years. I CANNOT imagine being perfect for 20 years at all!
There were some kinks that first year at ToT for sure. (the week being in September I think was a major one) I hope there are none at the avengers....
You'd think they'd have it down by now! I feel like there were more kinks for the night ones compared to the day races so hopefully it'll be okay for you. Also...I was at D-I-C-K's Spotings Goods for packet pick-up (not sure if the Dis will blur out the name of that store :rotfl:) and they had a lot of Avengers dry-fit t-shirts and socks and things, so it should be easy to put a costume together. :goodvibes
That sounds fun. :thumbsup2

The fact you had a lot to say about it shows me how much you enjoy it! :thumbsup2
It is! It's discouraging when I like an item and it doesn't fit or is out of my price range...I might have to tweak the price range requests!
It is all crazy. I really wish I had been thinking and signed up for the 5k... too late this year. (again)
I know! I think they need to tweak the number of Dopey runners to open up more 5K and 10K spots. Of course, Dopey is their biggest money-maker so I can't see them doing that. :sad2:
For the ToT both years they were unisex. I can't remember if at registration this year we had to pick female or male.
I hope it fits you better this year!!
I will have to take a closer look at the bands. I have such a hard time with things staying on my head... but I need the hair to stay out of my face.
They have them at the Disney expos, so maybe you could try one there? I'm with you, I need hair to stay out of my face but I really don't love wearing hats or visors.
:cheer2::cheer2:

Haha...one step at a time!! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much! :)

I had to Google bursitis...yeeeooouch! I hope you're feeling better! It was tough for me to get into strength training at first, but at this point I have really realized how much it helps me so I'm almost afraid to give it up or cut back. It definitely does make me feel better. I hope you get to Dopey healthy this year!

YES! Like any good running gear, they are pricey but totally worth it! I've never used a BondiBand, I tried Sweaty Bands first and haven't deviated from them. :)

OMG, the Castaway Cay double dip!! I was super tempted by that one, but after this upcoming cruise I think I'll be ready for a different ship/itinerary, so we picked something different for next year. But does it really get any better than 2 days at Castaway Cay?! Love that place.

The Disney cruise I went on last year is the only cruise I've ever been on, and I really loved it. I'm sure other cruise lines are cheaper and just as nice, but having the extra Disney touch is definitely worth it for a Disney freak like me. :goodvibes
