In Training: Marathon Weekend 2013 (Dopey Challenge)! 1/17 - LINK TO TRIP REPORT!

I am still at that point where I understand what people are saying when they talk about enjoying running, but I am still not there yet. I hope to be someday!
But, in the meantime I am trying to wrap my head around running 12 miles, or 13.1 for that matter!

I totally know what you mean. I started running in 2008 and I don't think I started feeling good during/after a run until early this year, and even then it still doesn't happen all the time. :upsidedow

And yes, it's totally bizarre to think about doing these distances. :faint: But if you stick to your training plan you'll be ready! princess:

Congrats to you!!! My husband and I are also signed up for the Dopey...

Week 6: Run #2 (3 miles on the treadmill)
Wednesday, October 3, 2012

6 miles completed/18 miles planned for the week
85 miles completed in training so far

Another treadmill run in the books! :thumbsup2

I decided to switch things up today by modifying one of my little treadmill workouts. Here's what I ended up doing:

0.5 miles @ 5.9MPH
0.5 miles @ 6.1MPH
0.5 miles @ 6.3MPH
0.25 miles @ 6.4 MPH
0.25 miles @ 6.5 MPH
0.2 miles @ 6.4 MPH
0.2 miles @ 6.3 MPH
0.2 miles @ 6.2 MPH
0.2 miles @ 6.1 MPH
0.2 miles @ 6.0 MPH

A little faster than I normally go overall. The first 2 miles FLEW by, but that last mile was rough, I think because I had to look at the clock more. And this might sound weird, but sometimes I find it harder to slow down on the treadmill than I do to speed up. :confused3 I was definitely feeling that today. But it was a great run overall! And to top it off, while I did my little 5-minutes-of-walking cool down I listened to the score from Soarin'...:lovestructalk about starting the day off right. :thumbsup2

Stats from the run:
Total time: 29:18 for 3 miles
Average pace: 9:47ish per mile (I think :confused3 Math is hard! :upsidedow)

No yoga for me today. The class goes from 12-12:45 and I have a 1PM meeting. Normally the class is right down the hall from my desk, so I think I would have had time to run back to my desk, change and head to the meeting (which is in a separate building), but they are moving yoga this week to a different building and I don't think I'd have time to head back to my desk, change and get to the meeting on time. And I like having a job, soooo...no yoga today.

In other news, I'm pretty sure I'm switching this week's long run and next week's long run due to my going out of town next weekend...so 12 miles this week and 7 miles next week. I'm debating switching my Friday run as well (which would mean 6 miles this week and 5 miles next week)...just not sure yet. I'll be heading to a family friend's wedding in West Virginia (as my mom's date...ring a ding ding! :p) and I think the plan is to leave Saturday morning, drive down and then head back Sunday morning. I don't see myself wanting to run when I get back home on Sunday, so I'm hoping to squeeze something in on Saturday before we leave, hence the possibility of doing the 6-miler this weekend and the 5-miler next weekend. The 7-miler is going to have to be done on Friday, the day before we leave. I guess I'll need to pull the trigger soon. :scratchin

Just thinking out loud here...and still thinking about Soarin'! The music is still in my head a few hours later...if only I were in that bright blue (and admittedly boring) queue right now...if only. :p

Thanks.. Training was going well up until about a month ago. I think I burned out... But I ran my first full marathon on Sunday and felt great. I was slow but I finished! Now to get my husband to be more consistent with training... I need motivation.. I have to get on the dread mill today !!! Blah!!

Burning out is the worst. But hey, congrats on finishing your first marathon! That's awesome! :goodvibes

I totally get not wanting to get on the treadmill...some mornings the only thing that makes me do it is focusing on how good I will feel when I am done, knowing I am that much closer to marathon weekend! :thumbsup2 Envisioning all of that bling I'll be earning in January definitely helps too. :teeth:

So I am back from the tower of terror race with the good, the bad and the sweaty!!! I wanted to fall in love with Disney racing(I did I swear I did) but this race was a huge let down:sad:
So lets start with the good:
1.The pre party DJ was amazing!!! Dancing, singing and lots of laughing
2.They put porta potties in the corrals as well as along the party. Too bad no one was telling the racers that!
3.We finished and even beat our previous time from two weeks ago!!!
The bad:
1.The race route was very poorly planned out. We bottled necked in 3 different places, they had us running(well walking for half a mile due to the bottlenecking) in the dark down a dirt and rock path, and thru dirt and gravel in ESPN(gravel in your running shoes at mile marker 7 not so good).
2. Lack of on course entertainment: We got 3 characters(big bad wolf, the heinas and the grave diggers) and 2 djs.
3. They ran out of water and powerade at the stations. Yes you heard me! We were waiting to get a drink at 4 out of the 6 stations
4. After we conquered 10 miles we go the pleasure of walking up the hill to fantasmic, then back down fantasmic, then across the park to Indiana Jones, down the stairs to get our bags then back up the stairs to the changing tents that were down another flight of stairs. Im cringing as I type this just thinking about it.
5. They over sold the after party( anyone could buy the ticket not just people who had a loved one racing) and the wait times were over an hour on everything except star tours and great movie ride.
And lastly the sweaty....
1. 88% humidity at 10:00 at night! We cant control the weather but man was it hot!!!!

We are signed up for the half marathon in January and I am hoping it will be a much better race....It will be better right??? I saw your race report and it seemed like there was entertainment at almost every mile and the route was pretty good?? Im stressing a little because I dont know about doing 3 more miles in those conditions again. I am reading that this was not a great rundisney race but I know you have done several is this normal or was it that it was a new race???

Shannon - I know you are looking for a Poly discount. I spoke to a CM and she said that room-only discounts are out today for Disney Rewards Visa cardholders. Didn't know if you had one or not - thought I'd let you know.

Rumor is general public discounts will be released on the 10th!

So lets start with the good:

Oh nooooo. That's terrible, I'm so sad to hear that! :sad1:

1.The pre party DJ was amazing!!! Dancing, singing and lots of laughing
2.They put porta potties in the corrals as well as along the party. Too bad no one was telling the racers that!
3.We finished and even beat our previous time from two weeks ago!!!

One thing I have heard about the night races compared to the day races is that the pre-race atmosphere with the DJs is better - more of a party atmosphere, so I'm glad you had that. :thumbsup2

I read that about each corral having their own porta-potties...GREAT idea.

Congrats on beating your previous finish time! That is awesome! :yay:

First of all let me say that I've been stalking the runDisney Facebook page and reading comments on other boards about this race - everyone is saying what you're saying, so I hope runDisney takes it to heart and makes improvements for next year.

One thing I heard about the bottlenecking is that some people thought other runners had lied about their estimated finish times and ended up in higher corrals than they should have been, so some of the faster runners in corral B were dodging walkers right at the start of the race! That's not okay. And it definitely sounds like the course was poorly planned - no reason you guys should have been running in the dark.

2. Lack of on course entertainment: We got 3 characters(big bad wolf, the heinas and the grave diggers) and 2 djs.

NOT OKAY. Ooh, I would have been so upset!

3. They ran out of water and powerade at the stations. Yes you heard me! We were waiting to get a drink at 4 out of the 6 stations

This is shocking to me...I wonder if they just weren't prepared enough for the weather? They were really well-stocked at the 2011 Princess Half and 2012 Full.

Sounds like some more poor planning. Woof.

5. They over sold the after party( anyone could buy the ticket not just people who had a loved one racing) and the wait times were over an hour on everything except star tours and great movie ride.

That is so annoying. They should really keep these things a bit more exclusive.

And lastly the sweaty....
1. 88% humidity at 10:00 at night! We cant control the weather but man was it hot!!!!

I'm with you there...running in heat and humidity really knocks me on my a**. It sounds like super tough conditions! At least it was at night and the sun wasn't out.

So I actually read this from you yesterday and thought about it as I was walking the dog. :upsidedow Honestly, I can't tell you for sure that it will be better, but my guess is that it will. :thumbsup2

1. I've never run a night race at Disney, but I have a friend that's run the WDW Marathon, the Princess Half and the W&D Half. She is a hardcore character stalker (much like I am :teeth:) and was disappointed in the lack of characters at the W&D Half, so I wonder if that's just par for the course during these night races? She even went so far to say that she'd recommend that people should choose a morning race at Disney to be their first, especially if character meets are important. But I don't think many people will do this since the thought of running 10 miles seems more doable than running 13.1 (and it sounds like that was your reasoning).

2. From what I've read online, I do think that the fact that this was the first time they've run this event contributed to a lot of the problems. If you look at reports from the first W&D Half (2010 I think?) you will find LOTS of complaints about how bag check was handled, overcrowding at the after party, etc. I don't remember if people complained about the course, but I know there were modifications made to it for last year's race and people were happy about it. From what I heard, the one in 2011 was MUCH better in every way. I don't think you'll find those organizational issues with the WDW Half because the entire weekend is centered around the races and this will be the (I think) 12th year they've done this race, so I would think they have the process down by now and have worked out the kinks (for example - I never use bag check, but I know it's very close to the finish line, so you won't have that issue).

3. I haven't actually ran the WDW Half yet, but I have done the Princess Half (which is the exact same course) and the WDW Full, so I think I have a good idea of how the race will go. I am sure there will be more entertainment (high school marching bands, other random cover bands, stilt walkers and more characters - especially in the portion of the course that runs through the Magic Kingdom) and the weather won't be like what you had this weekend since the race is in January. There's always a possibility of bad weather, but I don't think the humidity will be an issue.

4. I don't think you'll be able to completely escape bottlenecking. As long as Disney lets people fudge their corral placement times and they have their courses go through the parks (where the paths are narrow) you're going to have that a bit. But I remember being able to spread out much more after the first mile or so.

So overall, for a runDisney race, I would say that what you're saying is not normal when looking at this one compared to all the other races. HOWEVER, from what I read about this one and the inaugural W&D half, I DO think this is normal for an inaugural night race. Disney just can't seem to get it right on the first try. Honestly, it's enough to make me never want to run an inaugural race at Disney. :confused3 But hey, at least you got that amazing medal, right?! :thumbsup2

One word of caution for the WDW Half - this is a much, much bigger race that the ToT 10-miler was. The one big headache I've read about is that transportation the morning of the race can sometimes be difficult. So make sure to leave yourself plenty of time to drive to the parking lot, or make sure you get on your resort bus EARLY. :thumbsup2

I'm sorry your first Disney race was less than stellar...I am sure your second will be much, much better.

You are quite welcome! I haven't even booked my room yet because I have been waiting for a discount, so today I have a lot of decisions to make (and a lot of work that won't get done). :cool1: :lmao:

Week 6: Strength training and yoga
Thursday, October 4, 2012

All day yesterday, until about 1:30, I thought it was Thursday. Don't you hate when that happens?! And now it actually is Thursday...wahoo!!

Strength training went well this morning...I had one of those sessions where I was feeling good and strong. Where's my flexing emoticon when I need it?! :thumbsup2 Of course, that "feeling good and strong" feeling went away right when I started doing planks at the end of the workout. I am seriously SO BAD at those. :crazy2:

I had a similar thing happen in yoga today. We were doing some gentler poses and I remember thinking "hmm, maybe I should look into the more challenging class at some point." Then we got to some balancing poses (Warrior 3 and Tree Pose, specifically). There are some days where I'm somewhat decent at the balancing poses, and there are some days where I just flat-out suck at them. Today was the second kind of day. :crazy2: It's like the yoga gods heard me contemplating switching to a more challenging yoga class, rubbed their hands in glee and said, "take that, you tool!" :upsidedow Oh well. As an aside, I could be totally off here, but I feel like the balancing poses probably are really beneficial for running, because it seems like if I get better at those I'd have less of a chance of rolling my ankle or something...maybe? :confused3 Or maybe I'm just making stuff up.

In other news, I decided I'm definitely going to switch this weekend's runs and next weekend's runs. So while this coming weekend was original supposed to be a taper weekend (5 miles tomorrow and 7 miles on Saturday or Sunday) it's now turned into a bit more of a challenge (6 miles tomorrow - early because I have an eye appointment! - and 12 miles on Saturday or Sunday). Bring it!

And lastly, I've decided that I need to make more of an effort to get some pictures in this report...not because I think I'm some amazing photographer or anything (far from it! Still lots to learn), but because it's my personal belief that reports are better with pictures to look at, no matter how random they are! :thumbsup2

This one is actually less random though...while doing strength training stuff today I was listening to the music loop from the main entrance to the Magic Kingdom. Man, I love listening to Disney music. :upsidedow So here are the gates!

(Apologies for the bluriness in the photo below...this was taken during the 2011 Princess Half Marathon. I wish I'd completely stopped moving in order to get a good shot here...definitely a picture I want to get during the 2013 WDW Half!):

Upcoming Non-Disney Races (?)

So today I realized...it's October! Well, obviously...but I also remembered that this month there's a race I plan on running, as well as another coming up next month. There's a question mark in the title of thise post because I haven't actually signed up for these races yet...but I plan on doing that soon! :thumbsup2

Saturday, October 20, 2012: Local 5K Race

This is a race that's put on in the town where I live. I ran it last year for the first time and really liked it - it was small and low-key, and it really made me feel like a part of the community, which is something that my husband and I struggle with a bit...we've been living in our house since January 2010 but feel like it's been hard to get involved with stuff because we don't have kids yet (or maybe we're just anti-social ;)). It costs $20 to run, which I think is about average for a 5K. What's really NOT average for a 5K, I think, is that registration includes a long-sleeved tech t-shirt. That's pretty rare - normally it's a short-sleeved regular t-shirt for a 5K.

Other things that make this race attractive - the start is about 2.25 miles from my house, so it's very close, and part of the route is one of the main streets that I run on a lot, so I'm very familiar with the area and know that it will be a flatter course. Lastly, the race starts at 9AM - not too early, not too late. :thumbsup2

One small issue with this race is that it's really going to make that week of training interesting to try to fit it in - do I shuffle my other runs around it or make the 5K part of a longer run (I have a 6- and 13-miler scheduled for that weekend)? Another is that I probably shouldn't try to run it super fast since I don't want to get injured. My lack of speed training makes me doubt that I could beat my 5K PR right now anyway (it's from April of this year - 28:03)...but let's face it, it would be awesome if I did! :upsidedow

Thursday, November 22, 2012: Thanksgiving Turkey Trot (5 miles)

This is a race I've wanted to do ever since I started running, but it's never worked out. We normally go to my in-law's house for Thanksgiving, which is about a 2.5 hour drive for us, so until this year there's been no way I'd be able to run the race and then make the drive in time for Thanksgiving dinner. This year, we found out that the in-laws are going to my husband's aunt's house in North Carolina for Thanksgiving, meaning we're going to stay up here and have Thanksgiving with my family. And I'll get to Trot for the first time!

I haven't run this exact course yet, but looking at the map I know I've run part of it before in other races. Registration is $20 and includes a long-sleeved t-shirt. The race doesn't start until 9:30, which is nice...the only thing I'm really not looking forward to is driving and parking downtown. That might be a pain.

Mostly I'm excited for this one though. I've had my eye on it for awhile and it almost perfectly lines up with my training plan, which calls for a 5-miler on Tuesday or Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Not a big deal to move it to Thursday, and that way I'll be even more hungry for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. :goodvibes

Last year during marathon training I ran a half marathon in last November, and it was awful - I hated the course and just had a bad race, and it was pretty discouraging. I'm hoping that with the races I'm going to sign up for this year that I can sort of keep things fun and loose. We'll see!

I would say that you make the 5k part of your 6 miler for that weekend. I would run to the race (2.25 miles total), run the race (5.35 miles total), then run .65 on the way home (or more if you want) so you get the 6 miles and walk the rest of the way home for a nice cool down.

That's a good idea...I'm really going to have to think about it. What you're saying certainly sounds better than doing the 6-miler on Friday, the 5K on Saturday and the 13-miler on Sunday! :scared1: At least with your suggestion my week wouldn't get TOO messed up. Hmm...

Week 6: Run #3 (5 miles scheduled, 6-mile out-and-back completed)
Friday, October 5, 2012
Weather: low 60s degrees and overcast, humid at the start and PERFECT at the finish

12 miles completed/18 miles planned for the week
91 miles completed so far in training

As I mentioned earlier this week, I'm going out of town next weekend so I've decided to push my scheduled 5- and 7-milers from this weekend to next weekend, and run next weekend's 6- and 12-milers today and Saturday/Sunday.

So today was the 6-miler. It went pretty well! :woohoo: It was interesting because I normally don't run at home this time of day (about 7AM) and I could not BELIEVE how busy it was around town. On a normal workday I leave the house around 5:30 or 5:45...well before most school/work traffic really gets going. I was right in the thick of it this morning and as a result I had to stop at crosswalks quite a bit (better than getting hit by a car or school bus though...that would be a crappy start to my day :upsidedow) and had quite a few kids pass be by on their bikes (biking to school is a really popular thing for kids to do in this area).

Really, really great running weather this morning...low 60s and overcast is just about perfect in my book. It was weirdly humid at the start but that seemed to go away by the time I was done. :thumbsup2

Mile 1: 10:13
Mile 2: 10:05 --> I don't know why, but this mile seemed like it went on FOREVER
Mile 3: 9:49 --> probably should not have run this one this fast! :headache:
Mile 4: 9:54
Mile 5: 10:08 --> took a minute-long walk break at the beginning of this mile
Mile 6: 9:29

Total Time: 59:37 for 6 miles
Average Pace: 9:56/mile

Very happy with this run. One thing I did notice was fatigue in my hamstrings/quads, and I'm pretty sure that's from strength training yesterday. In the program I follow the guy says the most important move runners can do is the plyometric jump squat. Apparently having a strong butt really helps running. :rotfl: So I was really paying attention to my form yesterday and decided I probably needed to go lower in the squats...and I'm feeling it today! :upsidedow

And I'll close with a random pictures, just cause I like it. The Boardwalk is our favorite hotel at Disney and this is my current background wallpaper on my phone. :lovestruc

Non-running Trip Details Update: A DISCOUNT...with a twist

I did a post about a month ago with details about our resort and ADRs for the marathon trip. Early on we had decided to take the plunge and stay at the Polynesian, all the while crossing our fingers and toes that a discount would come out at some point.

Yesterday the first one was released! (Thanks again steph0808 for letting me know about it...you're awesome! :goodvibes)

Rather than call to update my reservation right away as I should have, I was a responsible worker and got some stuff done. These trips have to be paid for somehow, right?! As a result I didn't actually get on the phone with Disney until almost 3PM...:worried:

...

...do you see where this is going??

After about 3 minutes on hold I talked to a very nice CM who took a look at my reservation (4 nights at the Polynesian in the cheapest room they had) and informed me that there were no rooms in that category that could use this discount.

I actually wasn't too shocked by this. I know Disney only puts aside a certain number of rooms that can use these discounts, and I did take my sweet time calling...so it's possible that all of the discounted rooms in the category we wanted were already snatched up, or that there were never any discounted rooms in our category to begin with. :confused3 We'll never know.

The CM let me know that there WERE Polynesian rooms available with the discount, but they were themepark view rooms. The price from our original reservation would drop only $100 if we booked one. As tempting as it was to say "Heck yes! I want to wake up looking at the Magic Kingdom each morning! :hyper:" I turned that one down. At that point I asked her to give me some more prices and called Will to talk it over. We quickly made a decision (one that I probably could have just made when I was on the phone with the first CM, but I wanted to be a good wife and run it by Will first ) and then I called Disney back. This time I was on hold for 20 minutes! Yikes! I guess word was out about the discount. But luckily the call went fine and we got the new room we wanted.

It's not at the Polynesian.

:( However, it is at...

GF_EST_1_998.jpg

(picture from disneyworld.com)

THE GRAND FLORIDIAN. THE GRAND FREAKIN' FLORIDIAN. :yay:

(Hmm...will I not fit in at the GF if I use the work "FREAKIN'"? :upsidedow)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed to not be staying at the Polynesian, but making the switch to the Grand Floridian saves us $400 with this discount. And let's face it, it's not exactly like we're taking a step down in resort quality, ya know?! Really, when one's biggest "problem" in life is "darn, I'm staying at the Grand Floridian instead of the Polynesian!" life ain't too bad. :thumbsup2

The more I think about this resort switcharoo, the more I like it. We've wanted to stay at the GF for awhile now but never really thought it was possible ($$$), so we're pretty excited about this. I know there are people who find the place stuffy, but we don't (weirdly enough we felt more uncomfortable during dinner at the Contemporary in 2011 :confused3). And we still get to stay on the monorail - a first for us - meaning that I don't have to change any of our ADRs. So we'll still be at the Polynesian quite a bit. And I am SO looking forward to easy access to the Magic Kingdom (assuming the monorails aren't having work done at the point). Plus, I know that the marathon race course goes right by the GF, so Will can just stumble out of the room and watch us run by! :thumbsup2

I do have a couple of concerns, the bigger one being the not-really-happening-but-come-on-we're-not-idiots-Disney DVC construction going on at the Grand Floridian. From what I've read it sounds like most of the current refurbishments going on now should be done by January, except for the spa...which I wasn't planning on using anyway. But you never know. And if I'm being 100% truthful, I'm nervous that the room decor is going to look like my grandma styled it. No offense to my grandma, but...ya know. :upsidedow

So that's the big trip news! I know people change their resorts all the time, but I am SO not like that. This is the first time we've switched it up (not counting 2011 when our point rental at Kidani fell through 1 month before the trip  and we switched to Jambo...but technically it's still the same resort...sort of)...so I have some research to do!

And we WILL stay at the Polynesian some day...I hope. Just not the right time I guess!

Happy Friday!! :yay:
