In Search of my Body...Not The One I ate...#3 "Crowning Goddesses As We Go"

Lyz - Woo Hoo on the 5 mile bike ride!

Steph - Great job on the 3-miler!

Paula - so, how was functional strength?

I did too - went out for a 5-mile bike ride of my own after putting Kaitlyn to an early bedtime. Good thing, because it's too dark to ride now (at 7:30...) It does get easier - I've gone from 3 miles killing me to 5 miles killing me to a 10 mile ride last weekend. Bike riding's my favorite cardio. Just take some time to rest your legs. The wind and going fast works for me - I don't think about how hot and sweaty I am.

Liz - if you lost all that weight by sitting on your butt, I'm sure you can find something that works for a couple of interesting mornings. You could ...enlist Emily - child lifts, sit-ups to touch noses. ...check what's on-demand from your cable company. ...get a mini-trampoline and figure out a rebounding excercise plan. ...do pilates or yoga ...buy a WII and WIIFit (not that I've got one).

I'm feeling very self-satisfied right now. I did C25K this morning, had someone notice at work that I've lost weight (Shout out to Carolina!), didn't hit the vending machines at all, and went for a ride this evening. I even got 8 glasses of 'liquid' in! (6 water, none (yet) alcohol!)

Deb

You should feel self satisfied!!! Keep up the great work! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Liz, have you thought of buying kid&mom workout DVDs?

Like so: http://www.amazon.com/Mom-Tot-Workout-Barbara-Colby/dp/B000B2WNVQ

I am sure there are cheesy and not-so-cheesy types, but it might be fun and good for both of you to "work out" together?

I fell off tonight, which I am okay with. It will just be tonight and tomorrow, back on. I tend to do better with a splurge every 2 weeks, so this is my splurge.

OH, and I had my eyes dilated this afternoon. Feels weird!

Lyz, I'd love to see the workout.

Lisa, yes I have a treadmill. I hate it. It's old. That's why I pay monthly for the gym - that and classes are great for me. I adore you but your workout scares me. Let me explain. I am a wuss. Ask Erika, she has not been able to convert me to hardcore yet. Jillian would make me cry if she even looked at me.

I do real workouts on Monday and Friday, something on either Saturday or Sunday, Wed off, and I need some nice, simple, interesting thing to do Tuesday and Thursday mornings that doesn't require me to leave my house and takes no more than 30 mins. Because those are my mom days or they are pinch hitting work days, and my time is limited and I get bored easily and want to get on with my day. Does this make sense?

You are SO right about the 6 day schedule. I have a fitness freak friend who has loaned me books and they all say that. I know I need a real schedule eventually, but right now my wuss-*** schedule is all I can do. BABY steps! Yes, I basically lost 71lbs sitting on my bum. It's true. And I hate new things. So you can see why even two major gym days plus a weekend workout is like HUGE for me.

The gym worked on Tuesdays and Thursdays this summer, but it's not working now. Such is our schedule, Em and I.

HELP.

Jillian is only 22 minutes or so.....and she's not that scary. Well, sort of...:rotfl: but it ends.

And my interval on/'off cardio/weights/pilates can easily do in a short time. Just a short interval even with some of Deb's suggestions.

I have some 10 minute pilates (as in you choose the workout length) that are short and sweet. I think they are called "10 minute solution", Can get them anywhere.

The "classical stretch" tapes can be short too.

Wow, I'm so impressed with you Liz. So incredibly impressive to lose weight mostly with food intake. I mean concentrating on that the most. My weight loss has been the exact opposite. Sixty plus pounds off - gosh I loved no scale all those years but I wish I knew the number - with not many food changes. Funny.

Okay - you amaze me.

The class was hard... I haven't been in about a month due to meetings, birthdays and a bum knee so needless to say, the class kicked my big ole butt..... At one point, I thought I was going to puke... It was a good workout though and it was great to be back in the gym again.... So far this week I have done the following:

Sun - 4 mile walking DVD
Mon - 55 mins of water aerobics
Thur - Functional strength class
Fri - light the night walk (five miles)

If I can repeat this next week, I'll be thrilled....

Have a great night everyone... this girl is about to eat some JC double chocolate cheesecake, pack my food for tomorrow and crawl into bed and hope my muscles will still let me walk tomorrow... :rotfl2:

I can do this.... :upsidedow

I started by working out but I'd say for me the last 20-30 lbs were just by moderating my food intake...I stopped going to the gym in May and just recently started working out again.

Smiling. Probably the fastest way to lose weight - food intake. Hence how long my sixty plus pounds took. Years. :rotfl:

Erika, posting *workouts*. Not torture. So you can leave yours right on out :goodvibes

Anyhow, knowing Liz, 30 day shred is too much. I think something that incorporates Em would be both fun and exercise, though.

And, I believe that you can tone and maintain and shape your body through exericise, but that to lose weight, that food intake is key (either alone or with exercise).

There's this guy whose book is so interesting Kat. Edward ******ski. Something and no link Liz!;)

Anyway I think he had it. His book was in three parts. One for those who had little interest in exercise - only looking at food. One for those who could make changes in moderation in both. And the third section was for those who didn't want to change food. Obviously, the first had to be strict on food - very and the last had to be six days on heavy exercise.

Too many people have had success with opposite plans for there to be only one way. John Travolta, who goes up and down, lost major weight once with only exercise. He refused to change his food. He said he changed nothing. Obviously, he would have had to keep all the exercise up to maintain. And he didn't. Just like someone who isn't exercising at all has to always keep up their eating success style.

And I've had success, over sixty pounds gone and still losing, with very little food changes at all. If any. So I have to disagree with your statement. Cause I'm right here and proof.

But like I said at a much much much slower pace than Liz. And the reason I came here was because earlier this summer I wasn't following what had brought me success.

That number is so &*(& important to me.

Me, too. Sad but true. And clothes size. I know it is just a number to some, but I care about it. I really do. That may make me shallow, but it also works for me and helps me stay motivated.

OMG. I am just beaming for you! Beaming, I tell ya!

Ok there is a very real danger that I might not be able to walk tomorrow.:) I rode my bike 5 miles today. I don't know how E and Nancy ride for like 20 miles. I rode on the floodwall/bike path, then rode thru town to my parents for lunch. And then rode back to the office. I am pooped. Pooped I tell you.[/COLOR]

Lyz....first off, Goddess crown. Totally! Second...I have two words for you...a$$ shorts. Really. It makes all the difference. I can post a link or pic if anyone wants.

Ice cream she brought from work.. she brought three pints to the hospital. One for me one for the lady who draws her blood..(not me) and one for the girl who registers her. She admitted that it wasn't the best thing for me since we are doing WW and all together, but she thought I would like to have a taste of it!
Ben & Jerry's when you work for the factory you are allowed to bring home three pints a day... FREE . My mom used to bring it home everyday. She counted it as part of her pay! you figure B&J ice cream goes for about 3.99 a pint x that by three that is 12 dollars a day. Now she leaves it there. Brings it home when she needs to! They used to be a good company to work for but now a BIG corporation has taken them over so it is going down hill!

Jeff and I went to factory in Stowe years ago. Loved it. And my ex-boyfriend used to work there (back when I lived in Burlington, about a million years ago) and so the freezer ALWAYS had tons of it. OMG. I lived on NY Super Fudge Chunk for an entire year. Really.

Lyz - I know it may hurt, but keep going.... the pain will subside really.... get that walk in tomorrow.... I'll be putting in 5 miles in the rain.... talk about feeling crappy when you are done...

Paula

But Paula....you are doing it for such a great cause! Go YOU!

Lyz - My, my, it's getting dark over there in O-HI-O. Turning into a dark side one!!!

OMG, I know. I am sending batteries.

Gang, i need to drop these 7lbs and NOT gain. It's tough, I am struggling. And I need a workout for Tuesdays and Thursdays when I have Em with me and the classes at the gym suck. Like at home-dreadmill or SOMETHING. Ideas? I have the desire, but I need it to be fun.

Liz...you are YOU. You will lose it. That is what you do. Ok...exercise that you can do on your EM days. Here are my thoughts: (1) Exercise on Demand. I know you have it. Use it. They have TONS of variety...even ones that are good to do with kids. But I think you can do an adult one for 30 minutes. She will deal. (2) Is she off training wheels yet? If so, let her ride while you run/walk next to her. This is great. And if her training wheels are still on, this can still work if she rides well. (3) Also, with Em on her bike...roller blade. Fun. GREAT for your upper outer thighs and a$$. (4) Wii Fit, maybe? (5) I think you can do ANY exercise DVD with her around. My kids just sit there and watch me...they think it is better than tv! (5) Umm....DANCE! Get a dance DVD. That would be great fun to do with her around. And you know, with the whole music thing...

Smiling. Probably the fastest way to lose weight - food intake. Hence how long my sixty plus pounds took. Years. :rotfl:

Ok, I am glad we are talking about this here. And remember that this is coming from me...exercise freakshow girl. We all hear that the secret to losing weight is "eat less and move more." Or "proper diet and exercise." While this is true, these two things are NOT equal. Your food is FAR more effective for weight loss than is the exercise part. Like, you have to walk from NY to Chicago to burn off a candy bar. What you put in your body is going to have a much greater effect when it comes to the scale.

Of course I am not dissing exercise. It totally helps. And I don't think you would get all the way to goal without it. And the toning. My god, the toning! I remember this summer seeing a woman on the beach wearing a bikini. And she was certainly thin enough. MUCH smaller than me. But I tell you what...I looked way better. She was all soft and mushy and dimply and gross. Granted, when fully clothed she probably looks a lot better than me. But I wouldn't want to know that I had that body under my clothes.

And ok, I won't post my workout routine. :lmao:

Erika, posting *workouts*. Not torture. So you can leave yours right on out :goodvibes

:rotfl: YES! AGREED!

Lyz....first off, Goddess crown. Totally! Second...I have two words for you...a$$ shorts. Really. It makes all the difference. I can post a link or pic if anyone wants.

Now that is definately going to the dark side. I'll have to think about it.

But Paula....you are doing it for such a great cause! Go YOU!

AGREED! And Paula, you are on top of the exercise this week!

Liz - do you have Dance Dance Revolution? You and Em might like that.

Here is the "calorie blasting walk" I got from SHAPE, Oct 2008, page 142
for the dreadmill.

Time / speed / incline (time: as in minutes)
0-4 / 3.5 / 0
4-6 / 3.5 / 2.0
6-8 / 3.5 / 4.0
8-10 / 3.2 / 6.0
10-12 / 3.2 / 8.0
12-14 / 3.0 / 10.0
14-15 / 3.5 / 0.5
15-17 / 3.6 / 0.5
17-19 / 3.8 / 0.5
19-21 / 4.0 / 0.5
21-23 / 4.2 / 0.5
23-25 / 4.5 / 0.5
25-30 / 3.5 / 0

my treadmill incline starts at 1, so I just adjust accordingly, and I don't ever make it at 4.2 for longer than 1 minute. I just do what I can and keep changing it up.

I'm having a really crappy night. I'm feeling really insecure - really off all day today. And that sucks. Just sharing.

Lisa

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I am looking up all the DVDs recommended. Feel free to throw more suggestions my way! I think the key is something I can do for 30 mins at home - and a DVD seems perfect.

For those of you who don't know me, there is a bit more to this.

Of course I didn't lose 75lbs by literally sitting on my bum. I have been doing this for 11 months. Of course I move more than I did a year ago. Simple things, like parking farther away. Less simple, like dedicated exercise. Two days a week I do an intense workout - step or spin - and follow it with either an hour long weight class or Pilates. On the weekends I exercise one day - either running/walking or a spin class. I stretch after every workout; I think stretching is key. From April until August, I also ran or did a class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but now, with my work and Emily's school, I find myself either dashing off on those days or just needed a breather, and neither situation is good for gym going.

I worked up to all this, walking on my treadmill at home. I own a Pilates ball, a Pilates video by the woman who trained my girlfriend and former Pilates teacher, and a few mom/kid yoga videos. I do not own weights, nor do I plan to buy them or any other equipment. I just don't have the space for equipment, and as for weights, I'd frankly rather get a new lip gloss.

Talking about my exercise doesn't jazz me; talking about shoes, well, that does. We don't have sidewalks here; I'm not going to turn into this happy smiling mom with her kid and their bikes. I adore the image, but that's not me. I'm not motivated, I don't get up and think, yeah! I am plenty motivated by lots of other things - work, writing, friends, movies, etc etc.

I am who I am. I do not go to the gym after 10am - doesn't fit my life. I am in the house by 5pm, making dinner like a 50's housewife, or barring that, making reservations. I am never going to be Kat or Erika or Nancy or Lyz or Lisa or even Paula - I give you so much credit, girl. :goodvibes

I'm not an exercise loser - I ran a 5k - but I am not a reacher. I have a Trek bike but I'm not going to ride it until I get to a better place - because why would I expose myself to the elements like that? :lmao: I have makeup on!

I believe very much that exercise is key for maintaining weight and being healthy. I also believe food is key to losing weight. While Erika and I are two peas in a pod in many ways, she is the exerciser and I am the tracker. She can kick my a$$ but if it was just about exercise, she wouldn't have an a$$ left to sit on.

This is a rant, although I prefer manifesto, and I am well aware of that. The truth is, I felt like I wasn't telling the whole story and that felt, in light of offline conversations, a bit disingenuous. I have struggled this month. I've felt lost in my exercise, lost in my tracking, lost on this journey. I think the 5k was a goal, and now it's gone, so training is over. That leaves a hole. Also vacation is over, so food must be back on course. Easier said than done.

I've felt like maybe this wasn't important enough to ask for support on. And truth be told, I know a lot of stuff, right? But when I have reached out informally, those of you who heard me responded in lovely ways.

Anyway, that's where I am. If this thread is about support in our journeys, I felt like this should be out there.

I still feel a bit lost, but I am hopeful. And I am taking all your suggestions to heart. Right now, I have seven lbs I am struggling with, two days that need exercise, and some emotions I don't want to feel but have to. That's me, for real, right now.
