In-room Safes at WDW resorts

Any firsthand experience with the in-room safes? I am interested in finding the resort with the largest, or something that would accomodate a small (15") laptop.

My kids and I are techno-geeks. I would normally never bring a computer on vacation (i swear, i swear!), but we wanted to transfer the images from our digital cameras and the digital camcorder to the laptop each day, and I wasn't sure about leaving the laptop inside a locked suitcase if a safe wouldn't hold it.

I would appreciate info on safes from any moderate or deluxe resorts, or the Downtown Disney resorts, too. Any bad experiences with items missing from suitcases?

By the way, they now have these great little combo locks that are TSA approved and you can lock your suitcases once again for travel because TSA carries passkeys if they need to search your bags. Some even have small indicators telling you if TSA opened the lock. Pretty nifty!

Thanks in advance for any info you may have!

:umbrella: (someone please turn off the faucet in California!)

I can't speak for the moderates or deluxes but I am pretty sure that I read somewhere ( a post by an ex Pop CM) that Pop Century is the only resort that has safes that fit laptops. They had been designed with that specifically in mind I believe.

I am the Queen of Obscure WDW Photos (it's a title that I wear proudly ;) ). I'll try to gather a few photos of in-room wall safes and post them here within the next 30-minutes (I have a couple to share). For now, I'll start with "A" -- as in Animal Kingdom Lodge...

From what I've been told, most of the newer resorts have safes such as these that will contain your laptop. I, myself, haven't brought my laptop on vacation yet so I can't answer that question for sure, but it ~appears~ that these safes will safely accommodate a laptop.

Janet2K you are amazing! Thanks for those interesting pics! Way cool! :cool1:

Can't help you too much, but I am pretty sure a laptop would not fit in the CR safe we stayed in last year (just saw Janet's CR-Towe pic which confirmed my memory). Now, some info I do have that you may find useful - although I have not tried it personally. I have heard that the photo places in the parks will transfer your digital pictures to a CD-Rom for about $12. I don't know how many pics pre transfer, etc., but that may be an option that allows you to avoid having to keep up with a laptop your entire trip (personally, with our small children we already have our hands full).

I can speak from personal experience about what we have done with digital pics in the past. Our first trip we bought an extra memory stick (I think we paid like $25 for it) for our camera and, combined with the camera's built in memory, we were able to store about 300 "best quality" photos, which was perfect for a one week trip. Of course, I am not a very good photographer so after we put the kids to bed each night I would scroll through that day's pictures and delete the bad ones or those that just did not turn out as planned.

Just my ideas, sorry I could not answer your original question better.

Wow! An amazing collection of obscure photos, but EXACTLY what I needed to see! My laptop is pretty small, but I am not sure it's small enough. I suppose I could lock it in the suitcase if worse came to worse. We take so many pictures (granted, not of the safes) with digital cameras and each camera seems to have a different sort of memory card. THANK YOU for posting those, I really appreciate it!

Janet2k - you mighty want to consider getting a life. I am just kidding, really - I love people like you who find fun in the details. I am the same way - my wife wants to know why we have pictures of the laundry room at POFQ from our honeymoon. I say, why wouldn't we? I'll get a shot or 2 of the Poly room safes in a few weeks. Thanks!

My laptop goes everywhere with me as I am on call 24/7 for work.(also because I would be lost without it).
I travel a lot for business, and will actually be in WDW for business from 3/9 to 3/15.

That being said I have never worried about my laptop being stolen no matter what hotel I'm in. It sits on the table all the time and no one has ever touched it.
My camera's also sit out in plain sight. The only thing I have ever put in a safe is money.

That leads to a nice little side question. Do you use a wireless monthly internet subscription service with an air card (i.e., t-mobile or AT&T) or do you use the dataports in most hotels or the wi-fi areas?

Janet2k - You could start a photo gallery on these boards for techies. ;)

Those pictures say a thousand words. Thanks. We're hoping to keep our laptop at home, just because of all the other stuff we have to haul, but it is nice to know what's out there.

Janet, great pics! Would love to see more of other things, like resorts, parks etc. Feel like posting any more?

Oh, I need to get a life, do I? ;) (Too funny!)

Yeah, I have a bunch of obsure photos buried deep within my on-line photo albums. I also have some really nice ones, but no one ever asks to see a photo of my family, I don't know why. All anyone seems to be interested in are the coffee maker photos, the iron photos, the laundry room photos, the in-room safe photos (by far my largest collection of obscure photos -- and to think I didn't even post all of 'em in this thread), the bathroom photos (the roll-in shower photos are my favorite because handicap-accessible bathrooms were a life-saver during one of my vacations), the CD-alarm clock photos, and so on.

By the way, since flash memory is so cheap, I just take a couple of gig's with me (and a few DV tapes for my camcorder) and don't have to worry about transferring anything until I am safely back home. I resort-hop so much that adding a laptop into the equation would make me a little antsy.

Can't you leave valuables with the front desk for safe keeping (no pun intended)? I swear I've read that Disney won't guarantee anything you put in the safe but if you take it to the front desk they will put it in a safe deposit box or something like that.

Anyone know if that's true or am I just dreaming?
