My DH and I are taking my Mom and her best friend to Disney's HHI in a month, and I am so not ready. Normally, I have everything figured out by now-where we're gonna eat, what we're gonna do and all the rest of the details--but this trip is totally the opposite! I think it mostly has to do with the fact that none of us have ever been to Hilton Head, so I have no idea what there is to do. I've found a couple of restaurants online that look good, and I think we're gonna try and play putt-putt one afternoon/evening. I'm also planning to book the Paula Deen tour in Savannah and have dinner at the Lady & Sons as well. But, is there anything else that I need to plan for that shouldn't be missed. Please help!!

One of the joys of HHI is that it's not usually necessary to plan like you may have to at WDW. When we go, DH has his golf tee times set and that's all. But lots of us have been to HHI, so maybe we could make recommendations. What types of food do you like? Seafood? Casual or more formal? Any particular types (Italian, Greek, Mexican, etc.)?

The last post had it right. The best thing about HHI is that you don't have to plan every detail of your trip until you get there. We leave on Saturday for our 9th spring break trip. We usually ask a cast member about where to eat because something may have opened or closed from the previous year. I enjoy WWD but our vacation to HHI is truely a vacation because we relax and not worry about having a plan. Have a great time.

I think Savannah is a great idea. You might also want to consider Beaufort which is about 45 minutes north of the island. Several movies have been filmed there and there are some nice tours. You might also want to consider the Gullah tour around HHead which will familiarize you with some of the original settlers of the area. I would go back into the Sea Pines Plantation at the south end of the Island. It costs $5 per car, but you can come and go all day. In there, you could walk around Harbour Town where there are shops, restaurants, and the iconic light house, and around South Beach. It's well marked. Dye's Gullah is a restaurant to consider which features authentic lowcountry food. I believe it's in Pineland Center. They could help you w/ the location at the front desk. You might take a dolphin tour. There are lots of dophin in the area and it's fun to take a boat to go out and get close.

Thank you all VERY much for the input. As far as restaurants, we're basically looking for something casual--which is one of the problems that I've ran into while looking for places to eat--most of them seem very high end, which is not for us at all. A couple of places that I have been looking at are the Crazy Crab and the Salty Dog. Thank you all again!

The Crazy Crab is good, but I would eat at the one on the north end of the Island rather than the one in Harbour Town. The charm of the Salty Dog is the location (and the bar). The food is marginal. Hudson's is very good and not expensive in comparison to some of the others. Also, at Palmetto Bay Marina is a place called Woody's where a lot of locals go. It's very casual, a lot of outside seating, water view - very good; we always go there a couple of times each visit.

If you want good, authentic, VERY casual low country food you simply MUST try Dye's Gullah Fixins. www.dyesgullahfixins.com

Both the buffet and menu days are wonderful. The fried chicken is the best I have ever eaten. The smothered pork chops and all the sides are truly magnificent. She makes her sweet tea with pure cane syrup and it is truly the elixir of the gods. If you like crab cakes they are as big as your palm, about an inch or so thick and pure crab. Yummy!!!

Make a reservation if you do choose to go. Dye cooks everything from scratch and only makes enough for the day.

We also like the Sea Shack. Great seafood, low prices and definitely NOT fancy. There is a reason why it is called the Sea Shack. Be prepared to wait in line and wait for your table. Order before you try to sit, follow the ordering rules that are posted and enjoy some of the best seafood on the island.

I second both the Sea Shack and the Salty Dog. Captain Woody's was another one we enjoyed, recommended by the CMs at the front desk. On the first day last trip we went to Kenny B's French Quarter Cafe. It had the best shrimp basket, very fresh, while DH had some excellent Cajun food.

This thread is so helpful. We have a trip May 29-June 5th, first trip since '99.

Just got back from HH today. We enjoyed the Salty Dog, We watched the Masters there o Sunday. Good Burgers. If you decide to try a nicer restaurant(dress biz casual), I highly recommend Michael Anthony's.
