Anyone fly American regularly, do they have a wifi connection for entertainment that i can use an iPad, or do they use drop down TV screens, etc?

Even the small (B717(?)) planes I was on last month had free wifi. I think one still needed to pay.

Best bet is still to download some content in case on board wifi isn't working.

You can access in flight entertainment like movies and Apple Music for free.

Otherwise WiFi will cost I think around $20.
