23 Days Until: TC Loony Challenge

TIL: I don’t do well running with a deadline.

I woke up early, and got ready to go, but because I had to be done and cleaned up by 8am, I skipped stretching and any kind of warm-up. So by the time I got a mile and a half into my 4 mile run, my legs said “we’re done, thanks” and I said “well, crap, but okay, we’ll walk home.” I’ve got 6 miles scheduled tomorrow, and 10 on Saturday, and I don’t want to overwork myself today and not be able to do the bigger runs.

22 Days Until: TC Loony Challenge

I had a nice, somewhat cool and rainy run after work today. In an attempt to add mileage with a little less repetition around the neighborhood, I decided to run through another neighborhood across the road, and that added about a mile and a quarter to my usual neighborhood route. I prefer to do longer runs elsewhere, but I wasn’t sure if the rain would get heavy or if any storms would come through, so I wanted to stay close to home.

Tomorrow, I will do my 10 mile virtual Patriot Run. The weather is going to be wonderful, so I have high hopes for a good time. My 10 Miler PR is 2:13:32, which was a pace of 12m55s over 10.34 miles, according to my Apple Watch.

I’m going to go by feel. I’m running the same route where I had such a good run last Saturday, and the weather is good today, so a PR is possible
 

21 Days Until: TC Loony Challenge

The word of the day is: PERSEVERANCE (or stubbornness, depending on who you’re asking)

I figured out less than 3 miles into my 10 mile run that it wasn’t going to work. But I wasn’t about to give up and go home. So I ended the run workout and started a walk workout and kept going. It wasn’t fun, but it got done. The official stats for my 2022 Virtual George Washington Patriot 10 Miler are: 10.14 miles in 2h 55m 40s, for a pace of 17m 19s per mile. Not exactly setting any records, am I? 😆😆

I’ll be fine for my Loony Challenge in 3 weeks, because all I have to do for the 10 miler is finish faster than the slowest marathon runner. The 5K has a 25m/mile pace requirement, so that’s nothing. The 10K is the only one that has a hard limit, because I need to finish that in time to start the 5K, but that’s totally within my abilities.

I don’t have any chipmunk pictures, since it was raining yesterday and I was out most of today (though I heard that one of my chipmunks raided an unattended bird food bucket 😄) But our monarch is almost finished in their cocoon!!

19 Days Until: TC Loony Challenge

First of all, I’m super excited that runDisney is returning to Disneyland!! I can’t wait to find out the details (even thought it might be a while before we get any)

I had a good run tonight, although I got started a lot later than planned. I wanted to get the new WatchOS installed before my run, and it took a million years to download. I’m pretty excited about the workout updates—it has preprogrammed workouts for 1 minute hill repeats and 400m repeats, both of which are in my post-W&D training plan. They’ve also added “split pace” for one of the workout metric options, so now I’ll really be able to see my current mile pace while I’m running (I didn’t discover this tidbit until after my run, but it’ll be useful going forward). Because I got such a late start, I just ran in the neighborhood, and barely finished before the sun set.

This run put me over the 1000 mile mark for run, walk, and stationary bike miles for the year!

My neighbors all have no idea how to properly mow their lawns along the roads, which can create quite the obstacle course.

In much more exciting news, as of yesterday, our caterpillar is now a butterfly! Isn’t he pretty? (And yes, it is a male monarch—I googled it 😄)

He had a bit of a rough night and ended up with some small holes in his wings when I checked on him this morning, so I moved him to a different part of the garden. He really liked clinging to my hand, but it felt SO weird!!

Is it too much to ask to get a cloudy day for my tempo run? I started off ok, but the combination of sunlight and blacktop made me slower and slower as the run went on. It would’ve been worse if I’d waited until after work.

I decided to run today instead of yesterday because it was going to be somewhat cooler, and I’m moving Tuesday’s run to Wednesday because of high temps, so it all works out pretty well. It was 68°F and nicely cloudy. It’s almost like it’s almost fall or something 😄😄

I did the Katrina Lake Loop, plus a little extra to get the full 7 miles (plus WU & CD) in. I felt pretty good. The slowdown in mile 4 is from taking an extended walk break to eat some gummy bears. They worked pretty well to keep the hunger pangs away, and I didn’t have any adverse digestive problems, so I think I’ve got the mid-race snacks thing figured out for myself.

My grandma and I went shopping on Wednesday and I finally found some shorts and capris to run in—just in time for the end of summer 😆😆 I also ordered a couple pairs of shoes to try out; one pairs of Brooks and one pair of Saucony, and they arrived yesterday, but I haven’t had a chance to try them on a run yet. I also received my Maleficent shirt/dress for the Princess 5K, and my dress for the Soul half at W&D. I’ve been working on my staff for the Maleficent costume, and I think it’s going to be cool.

I had a good run tonight after work. My turnaround point for the run happened to be in the middle of a newly-cut hayfield. Even hours later, I can still smell these pictures 😄

Except on the one little hill, the pace felt good. I’ve learned my lesson on that stupid little hill, and I walked up it going west so I didn’t overdo it too early in the run. We’ve got some beautiful fall weather coming up this week, starting Wednesday.

10 Days Until: TC Loony Challenge

It was a lovely (albeit windy) fall day today, so I ran on my lunch break.

I actually managed to be close to on-pace, but the headwind in mile 2 was nasty. I tried one of my new pairs of shoes (Saucony Peregrine 12s), and I think they’re going to work out. And they’re pretty, which is a nice bonus. Despite the fact that I’m not a trail runner, I run almost exclusively in trail-running shoes because I like the extra tread for winter running and the gravel that’s frequently scattered all over the roads here.

I’m so glad I didn’t run yesterday, it was a record-tying 91°F, and very humid. But I did go out to see my chipmunks.

Roo has decided that the remaining tree in the park is an acceptable substitute for “his” tree that we cut down in July (his main den and food storage is underground, so he didn’t lose his home when we had the tree removed, just his elevated nest/perch). The “new” tree is taller, with many nooks and crannies with hide in.
