Improper Magic Band installation on kids

We know that part can be removed. Removed them for DD8. DS9 deliberately left the black portion on his runDisney MB as he wants to be able to "grow into it" and use it until that little battery eventually dies out! He finds it perfectly comfortable this way.

I don't know that there is a battery in the MB. Not all NFCs use a battery.

We just put them around our kids' necks. Then connect a leash. Plus, if they make a lot of noise it shocks them.

Not only did we take off the black portion but I also cut the band down with my nail clipper (only thing I had on me) did a god job with no jagged ends at all. It worked so well that this past year instead of using my daughter's new magic band I just used the one from last year that I had cut down.

It makes it much. much easier for her. Looks and feels perfect on her wrist.

Are the magic bands difficult for children to take off? I'm debating getting my ds one or just getting him a traditional ticket. He will be 3 turning 4 on our trip.

According to your ticker, you're staying on property, so he'll get one automatically.

I did exactly the same thing. It is much more comfortable now.

I do this for my kids too.

I think saying it is improper for kids to wear them full size is silly. My kids like having the sliders over the mickey head, which don't stay out as easily unless the bands are full size.

There are TWO separate RFID transmitters in a MB.

One is passive (the one that requires that your TOUCH the Mickey head on the MB to the Mickey head on the reader)
for park entry, FP+ use and "pay via MB."

The other RFID unit (battery-powered) TRANSMITS its code for quite a distance (comparatively.) That high-powered RFID is what enables the MB to trigger the on-ride photos to your MDE account, as well as other little "extras" (in-use now and/or "planned") for guest interaction. It also is the factor that allows Disney to "track" where you and your MB are (and have been) at any given time at the parks (and maybe a few other locations, too.)

The internal batteries in the MB are speced to last between 2 and 3 years.
We don't know how long that the batteries will actually last under real-world conditions yet.

Thanks for the info, Robo. I have been tempted to take mine apart to see if it was battery powered. Sounds like the battery dying would be a good thing. Then I would not get those obnoxious emails telling me my photos were about to expire.

As I wander around the parks I have noticed about 90% of the kids wearing the Magic Bands do not have them installed properly. The MB consists of two separate parts, the colored part and the black border. Most adults use the band with both parts attached like they are suppose to be worn. But for kids and small adults the black part should be removed. It is perforated and easy to remove the black part. Once it is removed the band is much smaller and fits on smaller wrists much better. I see kids at WDW with their MB wrapped almost two complete wraps and it is harder to attach and not as comfortable as it should be.

So, strapping them around the neck or ankle is probably not advisable either.

For the people who didn't read the packaging...there is also a pacemaker warning on the MBs, FYI. That gave me some pause, but I assume people with pacemakers get lots of warnings about things they're supposed to keep away from their chests.

They can also be trimmed easily with scissors to the length you want. If your kids still want the grey part around the outside, or if you are a smaller adult with a lot of extra band that you don't need you could try it.

And then if there are rough edges you can use an emery board.

My only comment is that MagicBands do not need to be worn to be used. I just tuck mine (I'm five foot nothing and have extremely small everything) into a bag or a pocket and still enjoy what I want at Disney World.

A MagicBand is like a timepiece. You can wear it on your wrist or put it in a pocket or a bag.

I had to shorten mine for it to fit. I used an emory board for the rough edges and did it before we left. The instructions were in the box. Also, I recently threw them away. Yup...I have no place to keep something like that, it doesn't fit in a scrapbook, I don't need another one until 2018 by which time the batteries will be dead.

apparently they were doing intentionally especially if its special one like an Frozen designed band because they can length it as the kid gets older and grows (so i've been told)

Yes but I thought I read that you can opt out of the band for a regular ticket. I'll probably do what someone suggested and get the band & slider thing.

Yes, you can do that.

But, you'll ALSO get the MB sent to you (or given to you at check-in.)
That kind of "get these MBs to the resort guests" built-in mechanism is nearly unstoppable.

However, you can go to any Guest Relations window at any time during your trip with a legal photo ID
and get a flat plastic ticket(s) to use for park entry, FP+, etc. and just keep the MB(s) in your room.

Sme people think the gray part looks better. Once you take it off, the edge looks a little raggedy. Also, kids might want to keep their bands whole so theirs look just like mom, dad, other sibling, etc.

Yup - this exactly. My DS didn't want me to take his grey part off because he liked it just how it came and wanted to look like dad. OK, easy request to accommodate. It never crossed my mind random strangers would be wondering about how my 5 year old wore his magic band.

I would love if they would "lock" the kids MB like they do on Disney Cruises. When you check in, the kids get a MB for entering and exiting the kids clubs. You have the option for the CM to "lock" the band and the kids cannot take it off. It's a small piece of plastic that stops you from removing the MB. Once the cruise is over, the CM snips the little plastic piece off, and you can remove the band, either keeping it or returning it. A definite opt in for us!
