Important info for Nationwide Card Users

from there web site

We will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit card and from 1 June 2009 on debit card and it will be included in the sterling amount shown on your statement.

The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.

It could be worse it could be the standard 2.75% most card issuers use

This is annoying. We only just got our NW DC account a few months ago and used it for the first time on our last trip. We also encouraged my sister to get one, ready for October, and she got the CC as well.
I suppose 1% isn't the end of the world, and it's certainly cheaper than the 10 pound that I was being charged per tansaction by my regular bank, but annoying all the same.
Thanks for the post and the update.

I may start looking at the PO option...not sure how it will compare with the Nationwide even after 1% fee....as I found the Nationwide exchange rate was v. good....

My DH has a PO card but we have tried several times to get me on as additional card holder but they seem so useless that they have never managed so it is now neatly filled away in my filling cabinet with the occasional statement coming with a zero balance - so they won't be getting our business.

Might just have to suck up the 1% fee.

thanks for the infor, disappointed like most. I was sucesful i getting PO CC in last month purley as a back up should I lose the NW card whilst away.

Does nayone know if the PO rates are the interbank rate as it is with NW ?

Yes they are Rob, just the same as Nationwide was.

See the chart halfway down this page(Battle of the top 'overseas use' cards), it has not been updated yet to show N/wide changes but shows what fees you pay http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money

Sorry I'm a bit confused....does this mean that if we use an PO/Nationwide or an Abbey Credit card is there a fee to use it as a credit card at the till and a free for a cash withdrawal from the hole in the wall...

Post Office and Abbey Zero have no fees on purchases - i.e. if you use your credit card to pay for goods then you'll get the full interbank exchange rate and no fees whatsoever. However, there IS a charge to use the cards to withdraw money from a cash machine.

You would need to check each website for latest fees, the chart in the link I posted shows no fee for withdrawing cash with Abbey Zero card, although interest is probably being added from day you withdraw. Also when withdrawing cash you need to find a machine that does not charge ontop of your own banks fees.
Personally we just pay for everything with our card, no resoson to withdraw cash for us. Only cash we use is tolls, maybe $5/trip.

Thank you for the info.....

I know that Nationwide currency rate is v. good do you know how they compare to the Abbey and PO??

Thanks for posting this as I hadn't seen it. We use both the Nationwide and Abbey Zero cards abroad (always like to have another card to use in case on gets lost or stolen). I will be getting rid of the Nationwide one now and open a PO one instead.

The Abbey Zero does charge £10 if the card lays dormant for 6 months so is best used every now and again to save that charge between holidays.

Thanks for posting this.
Only this weekend I recommended that my daughter, who is going to be in the US for a year from August, got herself a Nationwide cc. Think I better mail her pronto and tell her to apply for a PO one!

Thanks for the heads-up. I would have been caught out as we go away May 2nd. Now going to apply for Post Office. I am actually pleased in a way - I have never forgiven Nationwide for losing my wedding certificate!

That sucks.. Like many others this was my main reason for getting a Nationwide card in the first place. I do have a Post Office one aswell (mostly for backup) so I guess i'll use that as my main card when we're away instead. I think bf is going to apply for one too. I too am interested to know what the situation is with their debit card (not sure if i've overlooked it in this thread..?)

The same charge will apply to the debit card as of June this year.

Well that's it for me with Nationwide after June, then. I'll look into another card or go back to TCs. I'm not paying to get to my OWN money.

Luckily we're going in April :)
