Immediate Boston Help needed!

I'm leaving for Boston at 6:30 tommorow morning (last minute trip before school starts). I've never been, but we're going to see Blue Man Group on Saturday afternoon. Other than that, I don't know where to begin (literally booked the trip 10 minutes ago).

1) Museums and the like are good bets with us

2) I love shopping

3) I love eating

4) We're from CA, how much is it snowing?

We're staying at the The Tremont Boston - a Wyndham Historical Hotel (apparently in the theater district?), and won't have a car (will rely on taxis and our own 2 feet). Any direction would be awesome. I'm usually a planner, but this sort of jumped in our laps!

Go to the Gardens and you can go skatig on the pond. You probably can see all of the ice sculptures from New Years still. If you like shopping then dosn't miss the Down Town crossing area, Newbury St and Fanuel Hall, All real close via the subway. To see Boston from the sky go to the top of the Prudential Building or the Hancock building. You can do the Freedom trail and pick and choose the historic sights you like. You can go see old Ironside out by the water. Good museum the FIne Arts, The Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium. There is a double Decker bus tour that is real cool, as well as the DUck tours(though Duck maybe hard to get this late) If you want to take in a show go to Bostix for 1/2 price day of the show tix.

It's a very intimate, walkable city, but you've GOT TO BE appropriately dressed. We're expecting several inches of snow tomorrow night; the temp currently is 23 degrees. Bring parkas, sweaters, turtlenecks, good walking BOOTS, etc.

Try to get across the river (easily done by subway) to visit Harvard Square in Cambridge. Faneuil Hall is not to be missed, both for its food and shopping. It's right on the FREEDOM TRAIL, which is a self-guided walking excursion that starts at the Boston Common.

It isn't supposed to be as bad on the coast.

Foor food I guggest three things.

Seaood... Legal Seafood is good
Then try almost anyplace in the North End...everything from the little dive in the wall to the fanciest rest. is awesome Italian.

CHinatown for some realChineese food...Dim Sum is great

You've gotten some really good tips here so I can't really add much. I would say, however, skip the aquarium. We found it to be on the small side and not worth the price of admission.

A side note: We recently saw Blue Man Group (12/27) in NYC and LOVED it! It was so much fun. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Give us an update when you return.

Oh, another note-- I found many restaurants, while offering good fare, to be overpriced in Boston. If you're on a tight budget, just be forewarned.

Harvard Square has a new EMS store in case you forget anything!

How about a tour of some of the Harvard University museums? There're always events around campus and at some of the bookstores. Afterwards, you can warm up with some hot chocolate at Burdick's or coffee at Algiers coffeehouse-both on Brattle Street-just ask anyone to point you in the right direction...oh and I think EROS has mentioned Bartley's burgers before...hold onto your Maalox...

MIT has some interesting buildings going up too...maybe a tour of the MediaLab if they're still doing that...

Yiieee, bundle up...it's cold!

BARTLEY'S BURGER COTTAGE is a MUST if you're in Cambridge for lunch( not open on Sunday). Just ask anyone in the square for directions. EROS is known to frequently hang out there with a lime green ribbon .

I'd order the TEDDY KENNEDY BURGER ........it comes with an "uncovered" bun .......

We were there for the first time this summer and Boston is a fabulous city. We walked the Freedom Trail if you are into history. Paul Revere house was awesome. The Duck Tour was a lot of fun - quack, quack!! DH and I went to Cheers one night, we loved that show back in it's heyday. I would also recommend finding your way around the subway system, we found it clean and easy to use and the absolute most friendliest employees who went out of there way to explain to us how to navigate the city.

If you really want to have fun, be sure to wear New York Yankees paraphernalia at all times!!

If you want to get inside out of the snow and cold the CambridgeSide Galleria is a great place to shop. The Cheesecake Factory in the Galleria has a nice lunch menu. I agree that you must head to the North End for Italian food. Welcome to Bean Town...it is a fabulous city.

Bundle up, it's going to be chilly. Hats and mittens for sure.

I agree that you cannot get a bad meal in the North End. (Boston't Little Italy, as it were).

Everyone else has given you really good advice (with the exception of Kallison lol ). No Yankees gear, please!

The subway is called the T, and it is pretty user friendly.

If you like bargain shopping, I would suggest Filenes basement in Downtown. 'Specially hit the automatic markdown racks, you really have to look for stuff but sometimes the bargains are amazing.

I also suggest the subway...it is easy to figure out and you can get a visitor pass to save even more money. Sometimes it can cost a lot by taxi with all the one way streets...I swear they need to go five blocks out of their way just to get you somewhere.

And if it isn't too bad, a walk down Newbury street is nice. Lots of little boutique shops (although very expensive) that are fun to walk through or window shop.

For a great dinner, you should try Fire & Ice. Dinner runs about $17 and it's all you can eat. Basically, you pick out the meat, veggies, and sauce you want, and the chefs cook it for you on a gigantic grill. It's about a ten minute walk from the Tremont House on the corner of Berkley St. and St. James St. Ask the hotel staff for directions. And it's only one block from FAO Schwartz.

If you are in the area of the Prudential Center/Back Bay, the Maporium at the Christian Science Church is worth a look. It's a huge globe that you can walk through, and it's free to get in.

If the weather is bad and you find you can't do too much walking and don't want to venture too far from your hotel, there is a nice movie theatre just a couple of blocks from your hotel, take a left out the front door, cross the street towards the Wang Center, and walk cross through two traffic lights, and it will be across the street at the next corner.

The Improv Asylum is also a fun place to go. There is one in the North End, and there is also one near your hotel, right near the Blue Man Group.

Oh, and if you do venture down to the North End for dinner, don't get dessert at the restaurant. Head over to Mike's Pastry for some great desserts.
