If you do a search you should find a thread not too long ago where this was asked. I think, in a nutshell, the answer was that while they are both dogs, Pluto was designed specifically to be a pet to Mickey. Not much of an explanation, but there you are!
I don't believe that Goofy really is a dog. I think he's a cow. He looks remarkably like Clarabelle who really IS a cow. Also, if you look at the OLD cartoons, he looks even MORE like a cow. Although we saw a b/w cartoon where Goofy was billed as "Dippy Dog".
So maybe Walt didnt even know?
Gordie: Alright, alright, Mickey's a mouse, Donald's a duck, Pluto's a dog, what's Goofy? Teddy: Goofy's a dog. He's definitely a dog. Chris: He can't be a dog. He drives a car and wears a hat. Vern: Oh, God. That's weird. What the *** is Goofy?

Yeah I'm definitely showing my age because I was thinking of the exchange around the campfire in the movie Stand By Me too!!!
I've tried to figure out for years what Goofy is and he looks like a dog because his son Max looks like a dog too. But I do see the resemblance to Clarabelle cow. And how in the world does Goofy have a son without a wife?? Who knows why cartoon animators come up with the characters they do. I just think back to the cartoons that I watched in my day (kid of the 80's). Still I try to figure out exactly what a Smurf is other than a little blue creature. How about the Snorks???? What exactly are they?
Who would've even thunk in a million years that Mortimer Mouse would've become a multi-million dollar if not multi-billion dollar icon who is loved around the world.
BTW, my son LOVES Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and I enjoy it so much too because he actually learns something watching it!
I'm in the middle of reading a biography of Walt Disney. In his early fame years, his crew of animators were a wild bunch of guys. During the creative process of developing Snow White, the book mentions that the animators would often amuse themselves by sketching the Disney characters in porno mode. I'm not sure what characters they refer to, because at that time (mid 1930's) it was basically Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, the three little pigs and whatever characters were in thier Silly Symphonies series.
Anyway, a previous poster's comment about "what were those animators thinking?" made me remember that part of the book. They obviously were creative beyond measure, huh???
They are both dogs. Goofy was ment to be Mickey's friend - so stands upright and wears clothes. Pluto was ment to be Mickey's pet - so stands on all fours and dosen't wear clothes. There was a link on the boards somewhere that I saw that explained it but it was a while ago and I don't know where it is now, hopefully someone else does and can point you there.
