I made a National ressie way back in October for our trip in two weeks. I got a great price of $172.95 all inclusive fullsize for a week. However (and here's the stupid part) I used the wrong return date. I put in that we would be returning the car on 1/22 instead of 1/21.

I can't go back and change now or it will mess the whole price up. Here's my question - if we turn the car in a day earlier than the reservation says, will we end of paying the contracted price or a lesser price because we're turning it in early?

It depends! If it's a weekly rate will you still be keeping it for a week ?(sometimes it has to be at least 5 days to get the weekly rate). If you aren't keeping it for the minimum length of the contract they might go in and charge you at a higher daily rate. Check the contract terms and see how long you have to keep the car for the rate to apply. Also, you might be able to check with the customer service person over the phone. Call and say you don't want to change the reservation but "what will happen if I have to return the car a day early or a day late?" If they are looking at your reservation they should be able to tell you what to expect.

If all else fails check the rates using the Costco travel discounts. With Alamo (owned by National) there have recently been some amazing rates.

Call National or try the "revise" portion on their web site. You are shown both ressies, old and new, and then given the option to take whichever one you want.

If it is a week rate (which you get for 5, 6, or 7 days), then a day early may not make a difference.

I called National (twice, just to make sure I got the same answer both times) :teeth:

I explained the situation and both times was told my rate would go down about $2 bucks if I turned it in a day early. I thought maybe a more significant amount would come off - but I guess I'm just glad they won't be charging me some kind of early drop off fee!

Thanks everyone

You probably have a weekly rate that is the same whether it's 5-7 days. The reason it went down so little is because you're no longer paying the $2.00 per day Florida surcharge for the "extra" day.
