I know this isn't the debate board and everything, but I didn't really want to post this on there and get eaten alive by people that are quite mean to homeschoolers like myself.

Why does everyone refer to homeschooled kids as being rich? I'm sorry but I am not rich. All the homeschoolers I know are the exact opposites! Most I know don't have a lot of money, but make the sacrafice to give their children a better education. I just want to know why homeschoolers are thought to be rich and stuck up...I hate that image...because I must be both of those things, yet I hope you here at the CB know I'm neither...I don't want to start a big argument, just tell me why 'we' are thought of as rich and snobby.

I have never thought of homeschoolers as being rich. I think that if you think homeschoolig is the way to go, then do it.

What's important is what's best for your child.

I think people immediately assume that home schooled children are rich because one parent can take the time off from work to stay home with them…. I personally commend folks that can home school their children and teachers alike! I LOVE my boys but I LOVE going to work also!

I've heard homeschooled kids described as many things but 'rich' was never one of them.

I never knew that people had that perception. I plan on homeschooling my kids, and I can tell you that we're not rich. Not even close.

I imagine that it does have something to do with the fact that so many homeschooling families have a SAHM. Also, a lot of them do have "extra" things, like family vacations or RVs, but a lot of people don't realize that some things are just cheaper when you keep your kids at home. It's a lot easier to not buy name-brand clothing and all the "in" toys when your kids aren't exposed to that stuff every day. I think that what's normal for homeschooled families is many times much cheaper, which allows those familes to buy things that other families can't afford.

The homeschooled children in our community that I know are definitely not rich. I have never had the perception of homeschoolers.

I've never heard of that perception either. I always admire mom's who have the patience to homeschool their children. I think my 12 year old and I would be in WWIII before one week was up.

I have never felt that way. All the kids I know that are homeschooled are NOT from rich families. They are just regular middle class incomes like most people that live in this area. Usually it is the kids that get sent to the private/Catholic schools that get labeled as rich. (not that I go along with that because I sent one kid through that and had to scrape together every extra penny I had to pay for it)

I don't think I have ever had, or been given that perception either. And I read through both of the current homeschooling threads on the DB, and unless I missed it, I did not see anything there either.

Sorry you feel this way

Ditto. ::yes::

Well lets see, I would have loved to home school my Children, however, I had to work. My DH had to work, so I can see the perception of some people thinking that.:o However, I know of a few couples where the Husband works 2 jobs so the Wife can stay home and Homeschool.

Add me to the list. I've kept up with the debates on this topic and I don't recall that claim being made either.

As far as being "mean", seems to me that the homeschoolers give as good as they get.

Most of the homeschooling parents I know are borderline poverty level.

I've always thought homeschoolers were lower income. Don't ask me why I thought that but I do. I have never heard anyone think they are rich! LOL!

The people that homeschool in my area are very, very far from rich.

I never in my life heard the two words "homeschool" and "rich" in the same sentence.

Never.

Where have you been hearing this?

I do think some look at home schooling as a luxury, and perhaps that is where the perception of being rich or at least well off comes from. As kermit pointed out there are some expenses we don't' have since we home school and I feel that pays for most if not all of the materials we spend money on. There are also many expenses we don't have since am a SAHM. I think when my cousin added up what it cost her to work a yr it was 35k. That gave her only 15K of her salary a yr after taxes and most of that went to expenses they were able to get rid of or cut back on when she stopped working.

Maybe the OP could post some specific quotes as examples? I've read all the home school posts and never seen people accuse homeschoolers as being rich. Now, snobby... well... this isn't the debate board. (Joking, don't flame me!)

I've NEVER heard, or thought, that homeschooled kids/families were rich. In fact, I've never once thought about their financial goings-on at all.

I have never known anyone in real life who has homeschooled (or even considered it, for that matter), so I can't even begin to guess where socio-economics factor in regard to it.

That said, why would being called "rich" be upsetting to you? There are far worse things that you can be called.
