We just returned from our WDW trip, and I didn't realize that film could be damaged if placed in a checked bag until our trip home. We saw signs in the Orlando airport saying to keep film in your carryon bag to prevent damage from inspection equipment used on checked bags.

I didn't see ANY signs about this in the airport in New Orleans before our flight out. I can't remember for sure if we had the film in our checked bags, but I think we did have at least a couple of rolls in there. I'll be so upset if it's ruined! I can't believe this! Has anyone had any experience with putting film in a checked bag? Was it ruined? Is there any hope?

From all I've heard....it probably is not gonna be any good....I'm so sorry!!

With the new screening machines in baggage, they say that any film in checked baggage will not be any good.

Another reason to go back to Disney - more pictures!

There IS hope!

Here's two stories:

When we traveled last October, I put our film in the checked luggage with no problems. Now maybe they've changed the machines since last October, but I don't think so...

Also this past July my best friend and her family of 5 went on vacation to California. On her trip home she put her film (with great photos of her DD's with Cinderella from Disneyland) in her checked luggage. She then saw the signs but it was too late. She couldn't get all her film out before she checked them.
She was so worried about her film and those great pictures from Disneyland BUT they all came out great!

So there is still hope that you will be lucky and not have damaged film.:teeth:

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm crossing my fingers that the pictures will be okay. I wonder if maybe not ALL airports use the same type of security devices that damage the film since our airport didn't have any warnings about it? I wouldn't be surprised if the New Orleans airport is kind of behind the times!

The new X-ray machines were installed earlier this year. The machines can damage your film but I don't think it is a given. The only thing you can do is take your film in and have it developed to see if your photos turned out. Hopefully they are OK.

they told me at the airport as long as its lower than 400asa its fine. but i still carried my film and cameras in my carry on , and let them check each roll individually,,,,,,,just to be safe (i had 9 rolls, and they werent very happy having to hand check each one, o well!)

if anyone does alot of flying go and get a lead film bag. It's worth the money. Ive used one for years. then you'll have no problems.Any camera store will carry them. They come in many size's.just my input.
