My bank just called to ask about a $900 charge made on my husband's debit card to BMW Porsche. I said that was DEFINITELY not us and to cancel his card immediately. I asked her if there was any way she could reverse the charges and she said no because it had already been authorized. I don't understand this. The money hasn't been taken out of our checking account yet, so why can't they just put a stop payment on it?? Instead we have to go to the bank and fill out some fraud form in order to eventually get our money back if they approve it. I'm SO MAD!!! I really hate people who steal and feel like they have the right to do things like this. I hope whoever it is gets caught and sent to jail!!!

You asked your husband, right? Just sayin' cause once in a blue moon my honey buys something without telling me.

OMG! Holy moly, I'm so sorry!! I can't imagine what someone would have wanted from BMW/Porsche in that amount...

I hope they catch whoever did it too, and make 'em pay for it. I can't stand people who feel like everyone else's money/stuff is up for grabs. :headache:

 to you and DH!

Agh, banks sre so stupid, They knew something wasn't right and they called you about it, However, they are still are g oing to take the money out anyway

I actually did call DH first, just in case... but he said it definitely wasn't him. I just hope we get our money back.

Wow, I would be mad too!! That is not something to play with. I wonder how someone got approved access to his account with out having the card actually in hand?:headache: That would make me  especially if you needed the funds for this weekend. I bet if you told your bank that you had charges pending for other things, they would canx the transaction to avoid the fees being applied. I would call back and speak to someone else!!!!!

Same thing happened to me a little over a month ago. I happened to look at my online banking and noticed a charge for $457 that I KNOW was not me. I ended up calling the bank and they told me I had to come down to fill out a couple papers. It actually took less than a week, I believe, to get my money deposited back into my account. But since then, I have cancelled that debit card and haven't even activated my new one. I don't think I want to be bothered with it anymore. It's been a big adjustment though without using it.

You will get it back , has happened to me at least twice over the years. Usually get it back in less than 10 days. Fill out paper work at bank. Call the dealership speak to manager to let them know it is fake if bank hasn't already and call police dept in your area to file a charge also, they have an identity theft department.

Pain in the butt, but it happens and this is how all banks handle it. They have to cover themselves too. Most likely if you use your debit card for online purchases this is where it was stolen.

THe number is stolen and then a new card with your number is made. Its a big ring , happens all over all the time .

Is there anyway you can go tothe bank and put a stop payment on the item. It might cost 25 or so but atleat you will have the money in your account

Before anyone gets their panties in a twist stop and think about how a debit card works. It's just like a credit card. You present your card for a sale and it is swiped. If you have enough money in the account (or have overdraft protection) the charge is approved. No one likes to be humiliated and declined at a store. The charge is processed through visa or mastercard and is approved at that point. Then it is sent to the bank. The bank monitors for fraud on the back end. That's why they called. Would you have rather they had done nothing? If it is a visa/mc logo'd card there is not even a need for a pin number to be entered. If the order was placed online the exp date and 3 digit code on the back of the card would have had to have also been provided. The bank will refund the money since it is fraud, But they don't just wave a magic wand and reverse the charge. Banking doesn't work that way. It's not like a check that you can stop pay. A debit/credit charge is immediate. There is a process that needs to be followed. No investigation will take place. It isn't worth the banks time or money to persue a criminal case over $900. Usuall fraud cases will have to be in the thousands of dollars before the cops are involved. If it was an online order the bank will notify the merchant and most likely they order will be cancelled so no one will be out any money. If banks are stupid like a previous poster claimed them why do you use them? Why not just keep your money under your mattress? Oh. It's not practical, right. Then just go with the flow and let the bank follow their processes.

I always thought you weren't protected from someone using your card like you are on a credit card. Even on credit cards you are responsible for the first $50 on each card if they are stolen. At best wouldn't it be the same for debit? I was always told you can loose up to what you have in the account, that's why I never use a debit on line.

If it's a debit card with a credit card logo, you generally have protection similar to credit cards.

I was always leery of debit cards because, even though you do get the money back, it takes time. It's not like a credit card where you can simply decline to pay a disputed charge. So what we did was put the debit card on a separate account, not the main household account. No one can take $900 on that account because there isn't $900 in there. ;) It gives my husband the debit card convenience he wants, and gives me peace of mind.

:thumbsup2 You will get your money back. Just follow their procedures. This has happened to me twice now and both times the money was back within days. Fill out the paperwork and be grateful they called you to question it giving you the ability to cancel the card without incurring further charges.

We do the same thing. We have a separate checking account for any online purchases. If we want to make a purchase over $10.00 (the typical amount stored in the debit account), we'll transfer the proper funds right before making the purchase and verify that the purchase amount gets an immediate memo post (hold) which happens 9 times out of 10.

They can't steal what's not there. In fact, if they tried hitting a $10 account several times for $400 here, $500 there and getting no response, maybe it'll click up a flag that someone's trying to steal and hopefully there'll be a trace put on it.

Debit transactions when used with a PIN# are much harder to dispute but they are also much harder to falsify.

Debit cards used as Visa are easily duplicated, it happened to us. Cleaned out all accounts over the course of a weekend, general, savings and maxed out line of credit. I had to present a police report to my Credit Union. We got all our $$ back, did not pay any fees but the scary part was that it took well over a week to sort out. Meanwhile we had automatic transactions that were coming in. Our credit union was very good and they caught and processed all but one. For the one that was declined they produced a letter for us.

The transactions cannot be stopped because the banks have agreements with the vendors. Once that authorization goes thru the vendor gets the money until such time as a charge back is eventually generated, but it is not as simple as just stopping payment. That violates their agreements.

It was a Visa Debit Card so even though it is actually a Debit Card (meaning it comes right out of our bank account), it has the Visa symbol on it so we can use it to make 'credit' purchases as well but it still comes right out of our account. We never have a large amount of money in there, but DH had just gotten his yearly bonus from work. I asked the woman over the phone if we could just put a stop payment on it because the money hadn't actually come out yet, but she said that since it had been authorized by the merchant we couldn't do that. DH just got a new card and I guess we have to wait until the money has come out of the account before we can dispute it. It still hasn't come out yet (weird), but I guess it could take up to a couple of days. The woman also said that it was a manual entry which means it could have been used online or over the phone just by number... the person probably hacked into a website where we recently purchased something and stole the number, or it could have been something like what that Disney employee did awhile ago by stealing credit card numbers when swiping them through the machine at the hotel where she worked.

I hate debit cards. When our bank sent me one I canceled it and requested a simple ATM card. I use my credit cards for EVERYTHING. I feel I have much more protection that way.

If it hasn't gone through yet can't you just go to the bank and withdraw the money?
