I am wondering, Was this child three years old... I know that the twin girls were four. And, I am wondering if the autistic boy had reached his third birthday yet?????

If he was not three, then the parents were still on their own.


I agree that there should have been some mention of Early Intervention... Even if the child was not three yet!!!

Now, SuperNanny is from Britain, and the situation with these EI services may be much different there. Not that this is a real excuse. The Autism Specialist that they brought in was from here in the U.S. So, SHE would definately know about EI services. If they did not really encourage this to these poor overwhelmed parents, then, that is definately sad!!!

This is not the case! My children have both received services before the age of 3. The school districts become responsible for some costs once the child hits the age of 3. However, my school district is not responsible for my child's therapy.

I also watched the show and was left with the feeling that the parents had not been refered to a specialist for ongoing treatment. Yes, the specialist did give the parents pointers on dealing with their son, but I was left with the impression that she was expecting the parents to handle it on their own. I also agree that there should have been some discussion of professional services available in the community.

DS had speech problems, and I sought early intervention. I took him weekly until he was "up to speed" then would bring him back when he fell behind again. (I was also working with him at home.) This went on for several years; at age 12, people who didn't know him when he was younger would have no idea that he ever had a problem.

Of course, this is a different situation, but my point is that even with folders of information I still needed a therapist to work with him on a routine basis.

I do have a question---aside from what they left out of the show....in the context of the show--was the situation better off than the start?

Yes the situation was better at the end then at the start, but I too felt they left out far too much. It also gave people the impression that by doing just these little things the child will start to speak and get better. I felt that was a very wrong impression to give out. Yes it can happen but not in a two week period. I really think they gave autism more of a dis-service then help.

I don't have to deal with autism on a personal daily basis but from what I have read and learned from friends on the internet, I was very disapointed in how they handled it. No mention of school, assistance or on going help.

I agree with what others have said, they missed the mark on this.

That's not true. Each state has a program for children ages birth to three. Ours is ran by the health department and is called Early Intervention. 3 to school age is funded through the school district and the children usually attend a special education preschool.

That is right, but each state is different. In michigan it is also early intervetion and it is from birth to age 3 years old. What is offered depends on the childs individual needs.

There is also something called medicad waviers for families with more extreme needs. This pays for a wide varity of servies, including in home resipte care, parent training and inhome support or help. (I was a superviser for a short time for families with austic children, most had other speical needs in addtion.)

You would be amazed at what is out there, if you know where to look. Finding it can be the challegne and many parents are so overwellemd they don't have the coping skills to go out and look for it.
