So listen to this situation...
Since I was a double major with a minor as well in college I had to attend for 5 years. Well, my last year, all of my friends had graduated so I became roommates with a friend of a friend who was still around & had become a close friend of mine over the previous 2 years. We put the electric bill in his name and the phone bill in my name. We had 2 separate phone lines, but kept them on the same bill to make it cheaper.

Ok, now it is 3 years later and I am trying to buy a house. It showed up on my credit report that I have $1100 outstanding owed to Sprint! I didn't even remember ever having Sprint, but then they told me the address and I put 2 and 2 together. I had moved out first and he was taking care of the final phone bill. I had never received any documentation regarding it not being taken care of because I had moved out of college and I guess it never got frowarded to my new address.

I have tried to reach this old roommate and he will not call me back. I'm so ticked! I found out that it was originally a $50 fee that was never paid that has since accrued to $1100. Now, since it's in my name, I am going to have to pay it.
I should have never been so trusting!
I wanna just kick my naieve college self :(
I have that much money saved, but it's my WDW money :(
Just wanted to vent and see if anything similar had ever happened to anyone else on here. I guess you live and learn.

Ouch that hurts! PM my DH (he's picantel on the disboards). He's a consumer protection advocate. I'm sure he can help you, he sees this stuff all the time.

Good luck.

Call Sprint, explain the situation and see if they will settle. Usually they will. It is better for them to get something than nothing. Good luck.

Yeah contact Sprint...it's worth a try....

i agree with the op! If you call sprint and explain the situation to them then maybe they will take it easy on you and you won't have to pay the whole thing!!

Pam

After 3 years I highly doubt sprint has this debt and their incompetence is well known on the consumer forums. I am gonna assume a collection agency has this bill. I can help. Email me at picanteL4343@hotmail.com and I will walk you through the dispute process. I just hope you do not need your home in the next 2-3 months.

I did contact Sprint and they sent me to their collection agency which has been BASHED on the internet as being a horrible company (Allied Interstate.) They told me I could settle if I am able to pay a 15% discounted amount all at once right now- still over $900! I'm just so annoyed that I even have to pay it at all, but it is in my name so I really have no legal grounds, right?? Picantel, I am going to PM you.... Thanks for everyone's support :) I NEED IT

For a $50 bill that wasn't paid?

I hope there is someone that can help you. That just isn't right. :(

I'm a little aprehensive about following through with this. I will be responding to your email, but I'm just nervous because I don't 'know you' you know? No offense please :) I appreciate so much what you are willing to do for me. This location is actually near you in Columbus, OH. They called me yesterday and left me a message asking if I had decided to settle with them and pay the $900 settlement. I called them right back and they knew who I was without me having to explain anything or give an account number or anything. What kind of large company has caller ID and has so few people that they would know my situation just by seeing my name??? It was even a different lady that answered than the one who left the message and she asked me if I wanted to settle with her. She seemed like she knew all the detailed information about the situation and I had never spoken to her before. It was REALLY shady!

If he's oogieboogie's DH, we DO know he likes his sodas big and his ketchup plentiful.:teeth: (it's another thread if you haven't seen it.;))

Thanks for the post...makes me want to run out and check my credit report again. I do hope you can get it settled; please keep us updated.

Karen,

picantel is well known on the creditboards.com forums. He's been helping thousands of people fight against a collection agency named Camco. He's legit. I know it's hard to give your info to a complete stranger especially one you find over the internet, but if you want, you can call him at home. I'll PM you our home number.

He's a SAHD so he's definitely at home. Maybe talking to him would help too. Right now he's working on cleaning his brother's credit report.

BTW, if you need a face to go with the name, look at the top of the community board in the show your face thread. He's my real DH not the rodent.

Watch for my PM. Thanks

go to creditboards.com and ask about picantel. see what they say. I put national check control out of business. I helped the FTC with a case against camco(my nickname is the camco killer) and they got fined 300k. I am working against JBC & Associates another group of scumbags and they are getting creamed in court. Finally, I am working with the wall street journal about an article over another collection agency that is pure garbage. I will assume allied interstate told you interest has accrued and I did some math. To reach that amount they would have to charge 181% interest compounded monthly. ILLEGAL. Need more proof? Most lawsuits are filed in small claims or civil court against collection agencys so federal cases are a very small % of actual cases filed. However, allied interstate has had a whopping 184 federal lawsuits filed against them for fdcpa and fcra violations. 37 of those cases are still open cases in federal court. I know it is hard to trust people but you will not regret contacting me. I am nasty and I know my stuff and should they not back down I will help you get an attorney or help you file your own individual lawsuit and you will be going to disneyworld on their money.

How the HELL can a $50 become $1100???????

Wow I could have used this help a few years ago! I had bills from lab work that was never paid because they never billed my insurance....by the time I found out it was too late for my claims to be processed...I shelled out lots of money.

I think it's so nice that you are helping your fellow Disney'ers. I wish I would have known you when I was sent to collection by Paypal a couple of months ago. It was so unfair! I ended up paying it because I didn't want to ruin my good credit.
