Help! I have a major sore throat and swollen glands! I have head congestion and a bit of ear pain too! A cough was just starting this morning! I tried to sleep most of yesterday until the pain from sore throat made it so I couldn't sleep anymore! My dh has sore throat and chest congestion too. He's had it for about 2 days longer than me and said he's starting to feel a bit better. I just pray that the kids aren't next!

I just don't want to do WDW sick though! I don't know what to do! I may try to see the dr. today but they're not very good about giving same-day appts. AND it's a MAJOR challenge to go to the dr. with the four kiddos in tow!

Anyone have any good sore throat remedies as that is what's bothering me the most right now! Aagggh!

DD is coming down with a cold and you know we are leaving tomorrow too!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: To both of us!!!!

I was a voice major in college and my voice teacher swore by drinking pineapple juice... Something about the acid... I always drink it when I have a sore throat!!!

I just got over a sore throat and swollen glands. I really thought it was strep throat since I get that ANYTIME someone is even remotely near to me with it. I ran fever of about 102, too. However, my doctor did the quick strep test, and it came back negative. He was as surprised as me that it wasn't strep so he sent off a two day culture. It, too, came out negative. I was over it in about four days. Anyway, I wanted to tell you about the wonderful stuff that he prescribed for me for the throat pain. It is called Glyban (or Glybon.....I couldn't read his writing and the word isn't on the medicine bottle). It is a mixture of Benadryl, glycerin, and one other numbing ingredient.....I can't remember the exact name. The pharmacist had to mix it for me. Glycerin, which is over the counter stuff, is to put a coating over the tonsils. It helps things glide down the throat. The Benadryl is to help with the inflammation of the tonsils, and it is also over the counter. The only ingredient that is required by the pharmacist is that third ingredient, lydocane or something like that. It is for numbing the throat. It really did help!!!!! I could only take it every six hours, though, and it only helped for about 3 or 4 hours. I had the few hours in between that I had to wait without relief. Also, it did NOT make me sleepy because the Benadryl was not a full dose for an adult.
I wanted to share that with you because it is something that you can ask your doctor about. I am sure that he can prescribe it. If you can't get an appointment maybe they could at least call it in for you since it isn't an antibiotic or some "major" drug. It did help me by bringing some relief!!!
You can PM me if you have any more detailed questions about it.

Great ideas! Thanks, I'll try both of these! Even if I can't get the lydocaine portion... I could try the benadryl/glycerin mixture... will call drs. office when they open though first!

Sending LOTS and LOTS of pixie dust your way hoping that you will "kick" this soon and have a wonderful vacation!!!

Mucinex is an over counter medicine that breaks up the chest congestion. It is in tablet form. My doctor used to prescribe it when it was prescription only. It works, however you need to drink a lot of water with it as it drys up all of the congestion. I'm on my 3rd cold in about 2 months now, so I can relate. Hope you feel better soon! :flower:

try finding Zinc drops. Cold Eezz I think or something like that. I always get sick right before vacation. I think my body knows, Yes! no more 10-12 hr days at the hospital! Time to get her back for the lack of sleep! :rotfl: They have always helped me. They taste like the south end of a north bound donkey but they work! :goodvibes Warm wishes to you and I hope you feel better. A sick day with the mouse is better than a well day at work!

I'll put in my 2 cents and a handful of pixie dust also!

I would have some Motrin, that will help the throat and any other aches, any OTC chest congestion remedy, PLENTY of water, that will keep your secretions thin and flowing, and If you can't get you hands on that other throat mixture, try some Chloraseptic. It really does work. They also have it in a lozenge form. I hope you feel better!

Take tons of Vitamin C today, drink as much water as you can handle, and sleep as much as possible. Hope you get better quickly!

With 4 kids this might be hard but spend as much time as possible in bed. I am a chronic strep getter & I find that at the first signs of soreness & swelling if I get a lot of sleep I can rebound in 2 days. Good luck.

Mucinex is THE BEST. Works every time for me. :bitelip:

If you are afraid it may be more than a sore throat, Call your doc and have him prescribe the Z-pac. Six pills over 5 days, knocks out strep symptoms in a heartbeat.

Then there is always pixie dust :wizard:

I forgot about mucinex! It is AWESOME!!! Drink lots of water~

Drink lots of tea with honey and lemon. Don't laugh at this next tip; but if you have chest congestion, rub vicks on the bottom of your feet!! It works!
Sending Pixie dust your way! :wizard: Feel better soon!

IF I were you, I'd get in to see my doc before leaving for WDW! Just in case it's a sinus infection or strep. You can get some medicine before you leave, and should feel better in about a day or so!

:wizard: :wizard: :wizard: to you as you get ready for your vacation. Sounds like some good advice from all the DISers. I'll be remembering several of those. I think someone already mentioned pineapple juice, but that is one that musicians I know swear by.

Get some Vicks vapor rub. Take a hot bath and rub some Vicks on your chest, put on aclean shirt and about and shortly your chest will feel much better. I swear by the stuff and raised my 3 kids on it. It always helped quickly. Sorry about feeling bad just before your trip.

:( Thanks guys! I haven't been able to get through to the drs. yet. I picked up some of the things mentioned here at Wal-mart this morning! I just don't have the energy to drag everyone back out though. Maybe dh can make a pitstop before getting home tonight! Sure hope something helps! I don't wanna be sick on vacation... wah

I am quite surprised that nobody mentioned gargling with warm salt water! I grew up a strep-throat baby, and have ALWAYS done this and it really works. I am also another user of the Vicks rub on chest AND bottom of feet. On the chest helps break up congestion and ease chest pain. On the bottom of feet helps to stop colds. My dad just got over the flu and was instructed to do the rub on the feet. It really helped ease his constant coughing. Poor guy :sad2:

Feel better~ Here is some pixie dust for you :wizard:
