Yes, in fact, iuniverse is a self publishing company. We do have an agent, as well as a movie script, etc. We chose to self publish because these days it is really an uphill battle to get a large publishing company to take on your book if you're a first time author. Many of today's bestsellers started out being self published so we don't see it as any kind of second best and certainly did not spend 5 years on this project for the sake of our "vanity". In fact, even Dan Brown's first books were self published so I'd say we're in very good company.

I know it is an uphill battle to be published - I am in the battle myself so believe me I know. The use of the term "vanity" was not meant as an insult to you, but is a common nickname used for these type of publishers because they capitalize on the people who just want to be able to say they've published a book. Because of this, this companies tend to have very little respect in the publishing world because if you hand over the check, they publish your book, and quality does not factor into the equation.

Now, that says nothing about your specific book, it could be great and I hope it is. There are a lot of great manuscripts that get turned down, no question. On the other hand, there is a reason why most of it has been turned down by "traditional" publishers.

Since you have an agent, I think that sounds like you may have the real goods so best of luck.

It's always good to hear when someone's hard work has paid off. I'm still seeking representation for my first novel (more agents have my manuscript than I can count at this point!), so hopefully I'll have the same news to share soon!
