Anyone here from the greater Cleveland area, or very familiar with it?! I need info on the best areas to buy a house, etc! Any info about the city would be great, as I have never been there before. But, I'm extremely excited :goodvibes

p.s. My fiance  just got a job there, so I'm moving very soon... madly searching for a job  Wish me luck!

Congratulations on your fiancee landing the only job open in Northeast Ohio. We moved out of the area about 5 years ago as the job market was horrendous then. You will have no problem finding a home at a good price. As a rule, the further away from downtown, the better the quality of life.

We are a sprawl city so I agree that you don't want to be close to downtown. We are also very divided east and west and it is not easy getting across town during rush hour so where you work is important for where you buy.

I prefer the west side but live more southwest. Rocky River and Westlake are the best west side suburbs school and amenity wise if you don't mind that you will be paying a premium to live there. If you want to rent short term until you know the area I would suggest Lakewood but as far west as you can get in Lakewood.

I would avoid Parma, Fairview Park, Parma Hts., Seven Hills, and Brookpark on the near west/southwest side.

If you want to talk east side there will be people more familiar than I.

I'm having visions of Drew Carey and friends dancing in the streets.....sing along..."Cleveland ROCKS! Cleveland ROCKS!".......

Congrats!

Wow way to totally crush someones excitement! Hope you feel good about that one.

OP NE Ohio is a great place to live. We have hard working people and fantastic sports teams (lol...sorry...that was a bit much!)...Seriously though I absolutely love it here. The economy is hitting the area hard, but you'll get an amazing deal on a home. There was a very similar thread to this recently somewhere on here was TONS of neighborhood recomendations. I'll see if I can find it.

I live in the county east of Cuyahoga, so if you want only recommendations in Cuyahoga County, I'm not much help.

One big theme from the old thread was the preference for the West side neighborhoods instead of the east, as the East gets more snow.

A big question will be where his job is actually located, that will help us.

I live about an hour south of Cleveland in Canton, so I can't help with neighborhoods, etc. But, I can say that we go to Cleveland at least once a month for dinner, shopping, shows, sports, etc. It's a great city and we love it! There is always something going on in the theater district if that's your thing, and tons of awesome restaurants all over. Good luck with the move and welcome to Ohio!

My fondest memories in my adult life is when I lived in Cleveland. We lived on the EAST side (Shaker Heights, University Heights) and loved it! I was so sad when we had to leave.

I loved the East side. It was so close to great shopping and interesting areas. Check out Chagrin Falls when you get a chance. I also remember going to Sea World with our young son pushing him in the stroller... of course now Sea World has come and gone, but I still miss it.

I lived there as the Rock Hall, Jacobs Field, Science Center and what was the Gund Arena (now its named something else) being built. I got to see great rebirth in the city. Unfortunately, the city has changed since then.

OK Clevelandites (Clevelandians?) Tell me about Gabrial Brothers clothing store? Next time I go to Westlake to visit my friend, she wants to take me shopping there (in Parma). Is it worth the drive from Westlake?

Gabriel Brothers is like Ross or Rugged Wearhouse. It's hit or miss..if you hit the jackpot you hit it good!

What I LOVE about Cleveland is MARC'S. I LOVEEE that place. It used to be called Bernie Shulman's. Love that store.

As for housing both of my brothers just this year bought houses in Euclid, foreclosures, for $40,000. I am sooo jealous. Walking distance to the beach, near a playground..with a community center nearby. I hear the schools aren't great, but with that miniscule mortgage payment, you can afford private school when the day comes.

Marc's is a must stop when we go back to visit family. Gabriel Brothers isn't much to write home about IMO. Many items are damaged and you need to look closely. You will also find long lines and slow checkouts. We have one in KY and never shop there.

We also try to hit some type of Amish store for fresh baked goods and cheeses-those are mainly an hour south of Cleveland.

Thanks, I felt the same way! He's working downtown at Sherwin Williams Corp. We're still debating to live East vs. West side. I'll be visiting this Friday-Monday to view some homes and experience the city!

Thanks for all the input!

That is a great company to work for. I used to know their head of I.T. and some of my engineering friends did internships there in college. If he is at their stand alone campus on the river they have a running track and basketball court for the employees. Good Luck.

I grew up in Parma, and since getting married and moving away 13 yrs ago, the thing I miss the most(other than family and friends of course) is Marcs!! I have never been able to find another store like it anyplace we have lived. We are going back to OH in August and I will be hitting every Marcs I can find and Pat Cataan's too. Hopefully I will be able to slip in some family visits too, haha...:lmao:

Check out Avon Lake on the west side. It's on the lake, just in Lorain County. It has had a lot of growth in the past ten years.
