I've been wanting to change jobs and move for quite awhile and I finally got an offer for the job I wanted in the place I wanted :cool1:

A few months ago, DW and I decided we were interested in the Charlotte, NC area, so we flew out and spent a weekend there and really liked it. The week after we visited, I got a call from a company in Charlotte that I had talked with on the phone several months earlier. So they flew me out for an interview and I just got the offer and accepted it yesterday. Luckily, they were flexible enough to let me start a couple weeks after our spring break WDW vacation.

So we're moving from Medford, OR to Charlotte, NC in April. This is the first time we've made a big move like this, so if anyone has any good advice, I'd appreciate it. We're all really excited, but it's also a little scary. I think I'm most excited that we'll now be an easy day's drive from WDW :cheer2:

Oh, the other funny thing is that my cousin(the trainer in the picture) was also offered a new job on the same day I got my offer. He'll be going to work at the Sea World in San Diego. It's great for him because that's where he's wanted to go, but it sucks for us since we were looking forward to seeing him on our trip and being close enough to visit occasionally.

Sorry, I don't have any advice - but we are in the same boat!! We are moving from Mass. to the Charlotte,NC area in 2 weeks! I agree, it is scary - actually, it is still sort of surreal to me. We have never moved either- this will be our first time living out of Mass. We don't know anyone down there either.
Good luck! If you have any questions about the area, PM me

Jen

we are also talking tonight about moving across country again. We went from georgia to Montana.. then from montana back to georgia

now we are talking in 2 years moving from georgia maybe to utah

Congratulations!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Scary and exciting, but exciting definitely takes over!! :teeth: One of these days I'll actually stay in NC rather than drive through it. ;) I might find out how gorgeous it is and like it better than here! Must be nice. When I worked at a hospital in Boca Raton, FL, my boss mentioned that all the docs retire in the Carolinas. Must be nice! :)

HAVE FUN!!

That is wonderful, I am sure you will adjust fine. Congratulation's on the new job and best wishes! Yes you will be closer to WDW. Get packing now.. :thumbsup2

I'm so jealous! Just get organized and start figuring out your packing strategy now. Get on some of the moving company websites where they have tips on the steps to getting moved, (notifying the credit card companies, forwarding your mail, etc.) Plenty of people here have moved, so come back to the DIS with any questions. Also, while you're house hunting, DISers have been very helpful with suggestions on neighborhoods, etc! :goodvibes

We did the FL to Utah move a few years back. One thing I would do pretty quick is call most of the main moving companies and get them to come buy and give you a quote. We used United and it was a great experiance.

Thanks everyone.
We've already received a lot of good advice from fellow DIS'ers when we were first looking at NC. Special thanks to SC Minnie, who actually went through the trouble of mailing us some magazines about the Charlotte area.

We're definitely more excited than anything. But it's pretty overwhelming. There's so much to do that it's hard to know where to start. The only other time we moved from state to state was when we moved from Eugene, OR to San Diego. But that was before we had kids or owned a house so it was a lot easier. I'm hoping we can get everything done and get the move arranged before we leave for our WDW trip. I'm pretty good about relaxing and not stressing, but DW tends to worry a lot. I want her to be able to enjoy the trip and not spend it worrying about our move.

We've gotten several quotes from moving companies. One company was quite a bit lower than everyone else. I think the quote was for around $4700. It makes me wonder when one place is a lot cheaper, but we did some research and they are members of the BBB and don't have any complaints. The company is called Northwest Relocation. Anyone heard of them or have any really good or bad experiences with particular companies?

Thanks everyone.

One thing to keep in mind about the BBB is that if someone has a lawsuit or is contemplating a lawsuit with a business they can not put a report on the BBB. The only real GOOD way to pick a moving company is to ask people that have used one. Make sure you find out about the companies on BOTH ends of the move. Does the new company you are going to work for have a relocation department that they can suggest a moving company? Also, get FULL replacement cost insurance. You don't want to have to make a claim to your homeowners policy for something like this and if you don't get the full replacement cost they will depreciate your items and you may end up getting $12 for a tv.

The best moves we have had is when the driver has been in charge of the packing crew and packs his own truck but that may have been the particular driver too.

My new employer is a small company (about 25 employees) and they normally don't pay relocation costs, so they don't have anyone who's helped with moving arrangements before. They are giving me a signing bonus to help with relocation costs, which is great because I wasn't originally expecting it. But as far as figuring out the moving arrangements, we're on our own. We considered renting a truck and doing it on our own, but by the time you add all the costs, it's probably not worth the savings. I'm going to start a new thread to ask about moving companies.
