I'm Looking At This, But Can't Believe It

Yes, just put the "drink" (or extra salad or soup) on the OOP ticket.

Regarding the comment above that the portions were small....I (& several others) disagree. Which is why the topic of "sharing" or "splitting" a TS (& counter service) meal was brought up.

Some choose to walk away "stuffed", others choose to leave large amounts of food on their plates. We choose to walk away "full" & use the extra credit in a manner that works for us. :smooth:

Thanks for the info. I hadn't realized until I read it on the Dis that splitting was an option. It's definitely something we will do for some of our meals.

what are good places to split meals at? I am not a big eater and will never finish my food (app, entree, desert) and would prefer to split it with my child and pay cash for any extras he might want. I would not eat an app, I would only eat 1/2 of my entree and I do not eat desert so that would work out well for us. But what would you reccomend? I do not plan to do this every meal as we have quite a few character meals and buffets already planned. I do have a reservation at coral reaf though for lunch and whispering cannons for dinner.

As you mentioned, it isn't an option at Character meals or "family style" meals. SO I DON'T THINK IT WOULD WORK AT WHISPERING CANYON, BUT WOULD PROBABLY WORK WELL AT THE CORAL REEF. Table service locations that worked well for us:

50's Prime Time (big portions & big deserts),

Brown Derby (my wife gets a Cobb Salad OOP & then we split it, an appetizer, the Filet or Pork Loin & Desert...we are full & only use 2 "credits" - remember this a signature place)

Chef's (France), Tony's, Alfredo's ...I'm sure there are others.

It also works very well with Counter Service. We'll save the "extra" counter service for a late night snack or for breakfast at the food court the next morning (which are also "splitable").

Sorry we hijacked the original poster's thread.

I'm actually glad the portions are huge. Now with the new children's menu in effect it looks like I'll be sharing 1/2 my meals with DS or at least DH & I will be :rotfl:

We're from England and found the portions much larger than here at home. My 2 meat-eating teens managed to eat nearly everything, although we shared a couple of counter-service meals so that we could do the Hoop Dee Doo show and eat counter service for both meals the next day. I never managed to finish a whole meal (apart from the desserts, but that doesn't count!!!!) I ate a lot of veggie food (delicious) and we ate at several buffets and only had 1 breakfast in 10 days. If you're concerned about wasting food, I'd recommend the buffets as they are delicious (Boma especially). We wasted tons of food in Ohana's and were told that the food wasted is sent to a pig farm. If Disney sends all its wasted food to a pig farm, they must have some mighty big pigs in Florida!

I'm sorry I make you sad, but if you read any of the literature on preventing childhood obesity it states that one of the causes is because of the old "you have to finish your plate."

The food has been cooked, I ate part of it, and its not not going to help anyone else anymore whether I eat it or not.

We intentionally don't eat all of what is served and have taught our kids likewise due to weight issues. Being able to enjoy "bad" foods in moderation is a key component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Being able to enjoy and really savor half of a dessert is much better IMHO than forcing youself to eat double what you should out of guilt. Obviously at buffets where we can control the amount on our plates we try and take just what we can eat but once food is served and can't be re-served we just do what is healthiest for our body.

Hey bicker, this may be the first time we have agreed on something :thumbsup2

On table service meals, is each person at the table allowed an appetizer? If so, I can't imagine that much food after adding entree and dessert! As a family of four, we usually share 1 appetizer. Not complaining, but that's alot of food.

I really think the portion size of appetizers has gotten much smaller since the dining plan. Even DH noticed that appetizers were smaller 2 weeks ago than they were in Dec 2005, and he doesn't notice much! It's like appetizers are now sized for 1 person. Appetizers were pretty tiny at all of the TS places we ate at except Wolfgang Puck. I had read this and didn't really believe it until I looked at the 1 tiny, tiny crab cake you get at Flying Fish for the peeky toe appetizer. The potstickers are tiny and you only get three at Kona. The prawn cocktail at Rose and Crown had about 4 fairly little shrimp. Even the soup and salad sizes seemed smaller. The shrimp cocktail at Le Celliar is smaller and the presentation has gone way down (now served in a little cup). The onion ring appetizer at Sci-Fi is much smaller too. We used to order one onion ring for 4 of us (DD doesn't eat them) and had plenty-I'm talking Dec 2005. This time I gave each person about 1-2 onion rings and they were all gone. It's really noticable. Years ago when we did the old dining plans we never finshed all 3 courses as the appetizers were really sized for sharing. This month, we finshed all 3 at many places-Kona, Le Celliar, Flying Fish, Rose and Crown. We are NOT huge eaters either!! This I can not stress enough. Wolfgang Puck was the only place with "normal" size appetizers that I'd see at restaurants around my home and we didn't come close to finishing all 3 courses there. :)

Full praise to Disney for making smaller portions. It should not be the norm that portions are so huge that food is thrown away regularly. Coming from Britain we are always amazed at how huge average portions are in the States. I have battled with my weight for over 30 years and still managed to put on over 3 pounds in 10 days and that's without finishing one meal all week. My kids were amazed all week that what are super-sized portions in the UK were regular meals in Disney. I take my hat off to all those of you who do manage to remain slim, but it's unsurprising that obesity is such a problem.
