My mom's Parkinson's is getting worse. She has a doctor appt. tomorrow. I doubt there is anything he can do, he just keeps adjusting her meds. I hate seeing her this way. I wish there was something I could do.

Oops, thought I was in the Community Thread.....sorry

My sis-in-law is in her 50s and has had Parkinson's for maybe 15 years now. It is so hard watching the decline over time. She can still walk, drive etc but has times that she just freezes up and can't walk. The dr does keep adjusting meds but nothing seems to help for long anymore. In her case her uncle also had Parkinson's and developed Alzheimer's Disease. Though that isn't talked about (to me at least) I know that has to be a fear as well.

My fil is in his 80s and has Alzheimer's Disease which presented first then developed Parkinson's Symptoms. Although he is older it is still hard seeing the changes. In terms of Parkinson's I know he has some trouble walking especially on even surfaces and he absolutely loves walking. He lives in Manhattan so walking is so common and even though he has no short term memory he wants to walk all the time. I hate both Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

My FIL has both as well. He's only 65 though. Is that something that happens often, that the two conditions are linked?

I'm sorry you are going through this OP, and I'm sorry for your mother as well, but I'm glad she has you. You seem to be a concerned and caring person and I bet your mom is glad to have you in her corner. I said a prayer for you and your mom.

My mother is 87 and has a number of health issues including Parkinson's which was diagnosed a few years ago. Her boyfriend of many years had Parkinson's also and died from it recently. She reads enough to know all the possible problems with it and worries constantly about 'her cognition' declining. Her mistakes using her laptop and forgetting words are small so far but she still worries. Her gait is extremely unsteady but varies from day to day.

She lives in a large retirement community and when I would visit (I recently moved far away) it was so, I'll admit it, depressing. Many of the residents have Alzheimer's or Parkinson's or both. Just a few weeks ago my sister and I both said that we are beginning to fear Parkinson's as much as Alzheimers.

My mom will soon start using a patch for her 'cognition'. She sees an excellent neurologist (and nephrologist, cardiologist, etc.).

I think one of the best things you can do is keep supporting her and helping as needed.

Sing her a song, read a book to her, have her read your favorite story to you and record it. Make hand prints on an apron, 3d hand prints from plaster or trace it on acid free paper. Ask her about her childhood and video record it. Write a book about your mom a family keepsake of her happiest memories. Buy her flowers and take a picture.

Everything matters especially the small stuff as they're easier to hold onto.

Well that's it, I am finding my mother a new neurologist. Her Dr prescribed her a medicine that he prescribed to her back in 2013 (a patch) it irritated her skin & costs $700 a month, which would be in addition to her other meds that total about $400 a month. She told him, that they already tried that. "Well let's try it again" he said.
Also she told him she was nauseated & constipated.....nothing, he never said anything about it.
He isn't listening to her. Makes me so mad.

Good for you OP! Enough is enough! Line those appointments up because it's time for you to "interview" them. Can you get a copy of your mother's medical records? I told my moms oncologist we were going on vacation for three weeks and needed a copy in case something happened, first they said no, and wanted me to give them the name & phone # of the doctor she might see. Told them how would I know, never looked into down there but I wanted her records anyway. I had to pay for it per page! No sweat off my back! OP this just makes everything easier when looking for a new physician and allows you to make an appointment right away instead of later while waiting for the records.

make sure OP you're keeping yourself in great health, plenty of rest best quality of food and exercise!
Warm regards!
