I'm allergic to the SUN! WDW trip in August! HELP!

This might not be the case for you, but I thought I was "allergic" to the strong Florida sun. I don't have this problem at home. But after some thinking, i think I am having a photosensitivity reaction from taking Advil (an NSAID) and then spending time in the sun. After a couple of days at WDW, i usually take some advil (ibuprofen) due to the aches of walking so much. That plus the sun makes me break out. Next time I will try tylenol and see if it helps.

Funny. This Saturday we are going to Animal Kingdom, if all goes well. However, recently my Mother has acquired something redish in color around her face - near her eyes. We strongly believe it is from the Sun. We are hoping it heals before our trip or we may have to delay it. :furious: She tried Allergy Medicine, and Different Types of Creams but nothing seems to work.

Any Suggestions?

If it PMLE and your antihistamine isn't working, the most common advice from dermatologists is a course of "hardening" -- gradual sun exposure at home to condition your body not to react when you change latitudes.

You can do it with real sun, but people often use tanning beds, too. It *must* be done under a doctor's supervision, so that you don't overdo and cause a reaction.

Benadryl has an anti-itch gel that seems to help. Maybe give it a shot? :confused3

I've read about that and am going to ask my dermatologist about it when I go and see him on July 25th. I'm thinking a prescription antihistamine will probably do the trick...I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Wow...glad I found this thread. I have this same problem. Mine started about 10 years ago after I got a really bad sun burn. If I am in the sun usually for more then 30 minutes, I start getting a rash on the back of my hands, and boy does it itch and look terrible. If I get way to much sun, then the rash heads to my elbows. Weird. Anyway, I also have Rosacea, so I wonder if that has something to do with it. I asked my dermatologist about it and he gave me some extra strength type of sunscreen...it helped a little, but when I went to the beach in may, I still got a rash on my hands. I hate when the rash pops up, because I really can't hide my hands...and it looks like have the bubonic plauge or something  . Hopefully some of the tips on this thread will help...heading to Disney in December and can't wait!

This happened to me last summer - but it was due to medication I was taking, it was horried. I couldnt be outside from about 10-5 for long periods of time. It wasnt just the sun that burnt me but the heat as well. I ended up with second degree burns, yes thats how bad it got, over my hands, arms, part of my legs and my face. My hands were the worst.

In the end I had to wear factor 50 sunlotion, stick to the shade all the time and I bought one of those parasoles that you can get in the french pavillion or outside the hall of presidents. If you dont want to wear a long sleaves or pants have you thought about using a shawl or maybe a sarong to cover your arms or your legs.

My husband suffers from idiopathic hives, which basically means he gets hives for some unknown reason, and the allergist prescribed him Zyrtec. He was using Claritan at first, but eventually it stopped working and he started getting hives on a regular basis. He has been on Zyrtec for 4 months now and he never gets hives. Zyrtec is a strong anti-histamie that is recommended for hives. There are no side effects, other that tiredness, but if you take it at night that really doesn't affect you. I think it might be worth a try.

I go to the parks early - leave no later than 10:30 am and come back around 6 pm that night....

I know I am missing some good times at WDW - but you do what you gotta do....

I have a prescription for Hydroxizine - so I will tell you in a couple of weeks if this works...

Ala is not quite as hot as Fl - but I have the same problem here. So I am used to staying inside during the hot hours.

Someone reported in another thread about a sale a Dick's sporting goods. If you are near one, I found a bunch of Columbia clothing there for sale that has SPF built in. I got a pair of capris for 20.00, which is a GREAT price! Thay also had some things that were not on sale too. Look for Columbia Titanium.

Thanks for the tip! :thumbsup2

You might look around for a large sombrero or coolie hat (that shades your shoulders and does not flop down over your eyes).

OT: I heard a radio news report about people who developed an overall allergy to sunlight (ultraviolet) as well as a conjunctivitis like ailment because their eyes were subjected to intense UV from a gymnasium or warehouse light with a broken mercury or metal halide (not halogen) light bulb. The outer glass absorbs UV and on some of those light bulbs if the outer glass was broken the light stayed on and UV normally emitted shone all over the place as if from a sun tanning lamp. (Mercury was not splashed about.)

Go to the DISabilities board, they can give you information on how to go to Guest Relations and get a special pass that will allow you to wait in a shaded area, instead of in the sun for the rides. It doesn't allow you to bypass the line, just lets you and I think the rest of a small party to wait in a shaded area. It is considered a medical problem and Disney can help accomodate you, just that same as other's with medical problems.

Try www.sunveil.com

I bought a jacket for dd5months and its wonderful. Their clothes also lower the temp inside by 10 degrees and mosquitos don't like the material. Its extremely light fabric.

After I had my son, I started to get hives with heat, in the sun, hot water, etc.

I went to numerous dermatologists, all who said it was "uticaria" (which just means hives), and prescribed several different types of antihistimines alone and in combination with other drugs (like an ulcer medicine :confused3 ). While the combos worked, I just thought, there's no way I can live like this forever...I live in Hawaii! :sunny:

So I went to my old faithful naturopath doctor. He told me it was an overgrowth of yeast, which made sense since I had numerous yeast infections when I was pregnant and ended up being allergic to them.

He treated me for 6 weeks with acupuncture, chinese medicines and naturopathic medicines, and it was gone for good. He's the bomb!!! :teeth:

Don't know if this is what anyone else has, but it wouldn't hurt to get the opinion of a naturopath.

In my experience, medical doctors just treat the symptoms, naturopaths heal the person.

Hope this helps someone and I hope the OP has a great trip.

:wave2:

Just a thought....yuo should look into the special "disabilities" card that you can get for WDW. You could wait for attractions in a special place, out of the sun, something like that. I don't know much about it, but All Ears Net probably has a link! There is also the Passporters book for speccial needs.

Good luck! I hope you can enjoy your trip. :wave2:
