I'm a Nervous Wreck (female advice)

I just got a call from my wife. We found out 2 weeks ago she was pregnant, and we're ecstatic. We don't know how far along she is, as her first appointment with the OBGYN isn't until January. So, our best guess is she's probably about a month, maybe a bit more along.

She just called me and told me she noticed there had been a bit of bleeding. She wasn't still bleeding, but noticed she had been. She's at the doctors right now getting a blood test, and has to go back on Friday for another.

I'm scared to death. Does this sound like anything that could be normal?

This happened to me with my second pregnancy. I was early along too and it lasted 1 or 2 days and then I was fine and carried to term! If she has already stopped bleeding and it was so little she didn't notice when it happened, she is probably o.k.

Oh, the blood test is to check her progesterone levels. If it is too low, they will put her on some medication to bring it up and monitor her blood levels. When her levels remain high enough to maintain a pregnancy, they will take her off the progesterone.

Every woman is different and getting it checked out is the smart thing.

I had bleeding with all four of my PG's. Two were successful, two were not. A lot of people experience mild bleeding or spotting early in their pregnancies. The blood test will measure the level of pregnancy hormone in her bloodstream. It should double every 48 hours. If it doesn't, the PG may not be successful.

This could be so many things. So, seeing and checking w/ the doctor is most likely the best thing. I had bleeding w/ 2 pregnancies myself- one went to term and unfortunately the other did not. I'll send tons of good thoughts your way.

I have heard it can be completely normal. I am a member of the babycenter boards as i am currently pregnant, and there are a lot of women who have experienced this.

This may be TMI, but darker brown bleeding can mean 'old' blood and seems to generally not be a concern. Red blood is new blood, and can be the beginning of a miscarriage, but it can be other things!. There have been many women over there that develop cysts on their ovaries that cause this red bleeding, and it doesnt affect the baby at all. I have also read where some women just bled occassionally throughout their pregnancy without ever finding out 'why', and have perfectly healthy children. Some also talk about bleeding slightly on the days where they normally would have started their period.

I hope this puts you at ease. I will be thinking of your wife!! She may get an ultrasound becuase of this, and then you would be better able to pinpoint how far along she is.

I had spotting with my last pregnancy. They told me that 50% of pregnancies that have bleeding end in a healthy baby.

I did miscarry, but bleeding can be caused by soooo many different things.

Not to be gross, but it depends on the color of the blood. The more brown, the older the blood is. If it is bright red, that means new blood and more of a concern. I had bleeding with my last baby. I went to the ER and they told me I was going to miscarry--I was about 5 weeks along. I was told to go home, then to make an appointment with my OB. I called the ob and got in on Monday (went to the ER Saturday). The Dr. told me that I may not be miscarrying (he also told me that ER Dr.'s are great, but they are not OB's and I should have called him and NOT gone to the ER with this kind of problem). They did a high level ultrasound, got the baby's heartbeat and said that I needed to take it easy, but I was not going to lose the baby for the time being. I had bleeding on and off for the entire first trimester, but did not loose the baby. He is a healthy 18 month old right now!! He was #5 for us, and we were a little nervous about having this baby. Not real sure that we wanted a 5th, but when the problems started happeneing, we knew how much we wanted this baby!

She said the blood was darker in color, brownish. However, she didn't think it was spotting as there was more than that. This was a couple hours ago, and there's been nothing since.

good luck to you.. as others have mentioned, it can be common to have some spotting/bleeding.. i had spotting with two of my pregnancies.. one went to term.. one did not..

the blood test is probably testing the hcg level.. it should be increasing each day.. when i had bleeding with my second pregnancy, this is what i had to have done.. i had blood drawn one day and then two days later had to have it re-drawn to see if it went up.. if it at least doubled everything should be ok.. if it didn't go up, or if it went down.. not so good news..

Here is my story - warning that is is not a positive outcome:
I went to the ER at 6-7 weeks preg. with very light, pink spotting that I was having off and on for about 4 hrs. Saw the ER doc. and he told me I was probably going to miscarry, but he wasn't sure. Saw my OB a couple days later (spotting had stopped), and she said that if you spot in the first trimester, there is only a 30% chance of carrying the baby to term. Started having bloodwork done every other day, and my HCG levels were coming down, therefore I was going to miscarry. I miscarried about a week and a half after my trip to the ER. It was such a stressful time, expecially since we didn't know what was going on for about 5 days.
But, there are women who spot throughout pregnancy, and their babies are fine. The bloodwork (done a couple times) to see where her HCG levels are will tell you what is going on.

I had the same problem. My spotting was brownish. Called my OB/GYN right away since I was also having cramping with it. This was my first pregnancy & I didn't know what to expect. He did an internal Ultra Sounds & baby seemed ok so he put me on bed rest. As long as I was on bed rest, all was well. As soon as I resumed a normal lifestyle, I started bleeding again. Wouldn't you know, I had to remain in bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy but I delivered a healthy 6 lb 1 oz baby boy, who is today driivng me NUTS! He's now 10 y/o & such a handsome, smart boy who sometimes has a smart mouth!

I hope all will be well, but just tell her to take it easy & maybe staying off her feet till she knows for sure how things are going. Please let us know how things are going.

I've been blessed with two children but I also had 3 M/C's along the way.

In all of my pregnancies I had some level of spotting/bleeding. Two of those times I carried full term, but sadly the other times I did not.

It is fairly common to have some spotting during early pregnancy.

I spotted on and off my entire second pregnancy. I would sneeze and a small vein would break and I would spot. It happens, but it is always a good idea to stay on top of it and have everything checked out.

I spotted/had light bleeding with my ds10. It can be completely commonplace, but your dw's doing the right thing by getting checked--they'll take good care of her.

It's always best to see the doctor for confirmation, but I am 8 weeks pregnant and just met with the OB nurse last week. I don't see my OB for the first time until Jan 6th. I am noticing more cramping this time than with the first and I asked about it. She said menstrual type cramping was completely normal and that a lot of people experience some bleeding early on. She said that if there was some bleeding it was fine unless it was bright red, fresh blood. She said that old, brown blood is perfectly normal and that I probably wouldn't even need to come in if I experienced that. I'm hoping that you hear some good news quickly.
