I'm a little peeved.

You don't die on this hill, the jerk of a teacher might, though. No way I would let this stand...

I think such a response is completely disproportionate to the "crime". Again, the OP is getting the one side of the story. If this was part of a pattern or if the teacher wasn't otherwise doing his job then I would respond differently. Otherwise I would give the teacher the benefit of the doubt and assume that the question was asked out of concern and not to embarrass the student.

Based on the story, I wouldn't call the school but the teacher does sound like an ***.

Absolutely report the teacher! They think they can say ANYTHING to kids, and they do. If you don't speak for your son, who will??

I went to high school in the 80's, not sure if they still have it, but there was an area called the smoking lounge outside. So many people smelled like smoke, even if they cut through the louge to get to another side of the school faster.

We had that too. Not any more though. I told DS that we had one and he was amazed. Its illegal to purchase them if youre a minor now.

Ill ask Cam for more clarification when he gets home but he is usually pretty up front with stuff like that.

I think DS handled himself just fine. If the teacher had kept going with it or called him a liar or something I would be pursuing it further.

Its tough letting our kids handle things themselves but I figure they have to learn how to do it sometime. Dont get me wrong I will step in if he cant handle something ( or if he asks me to) but he has a good head on his shoulders and I like that he can confidently stand up for himself.

We don't deal with the smelly kids. That's the nurses job. :thumbsup2

That is exactly the reason why my bil and sil don't smoke in their house anymore. A teacher said something to their oldest dd. They were SO embarrassed and she was only in elementary school at the time. They had built a new house and at first wanted to keep the new house smell, but when their dd told them what was said and how happy she was now that they weren't smoking in the house, it sealed the deal for them. They smoke in the garage during the winter. Of course, I keep hoping they'll quit, they are the only in-laws I like!!:lmao:

Relax! He didn't say your kid smelled like garbage...he said it smelled like cigarettes over there. Teachers have a tough job and part of that job is making sure that their students aren't smoking. If Cam wasn't smoking...no worries.;)

I personally don't see how it's a problem, but that's probably I'm just overall cheerful. The teacher smelled smoke that seemed to come from your son and just asked. :confused3

I grew up in a house where both parents smoked - in the house, in the car, etc. I know I went to school reeking of it. If a teacher had called me out on it, I wouldn't have been embarrassed at all. I would have just flat out told them it was my parents. And let that be that.

This really rubs me the wrong way-Who is THEY? Teachers? Not all teachers think they can say ANYTHING to kids and most don't. I really love how people paint us all with one brush.

Let it go. Really, you only have one side of the story anyway.

Really? You consider that part of a highschool teacher's job? I don't see it as being any of their business at all. I'm a non-smoker, I hate the smell, but I think there are far better ways for a teacher to spend their time and energy than policing their student's habits. If we were talking about 9 years olds it might be different, but at 14 I think the teacher should stick to the curriculum.

Yes, I would definitely consider it part of the teacher's job. Smoking is illegal at age 14. I would expect the teacher to speak up if he thought a student was smoking just like I would expect the teacher to speak up if he/she smelled alcohol on a teen's breath.

I do think the teacher could have been more discrete.

It's not a big deal. Why must an issue be made about this. The OP isn't that peeved so why do you insist on getting this teacher in trouble? YOu really seem to have an issue with teachers.

I'd be thrilled that a teacher was observant enough and caring enough to address the issue. It sounds like the kids handled it well and the entire class was served notice that smoking wasn't "cool". Sounds like a win to me:goodvibes

that's terrible, i'm sorry he singled out your son!!

sometimes i think teachers get on this power trip and think they can say whatever they want to students.

when i was in high school i had this teacher who accused me of drinking and doing drugs because of the "way that i dressed" and because my "hair changed every month" and i was the most straight edge kid you could meet.

my mother got upset, called the BOE, but who would you believe? a nice old Christian woman teaching English, or the student who wears a lot of black and has wild hair colors?
