I can't believe I let this happen. Please don't flame me. I feel bad enough already.........

Seven years ago, I borrowed a beautiful Belle costume from my sister. Her step daughter wore it when she was four. She's 17 now. My DD wore it when she was 3, and she's 10 now. I kept it in the closet, hanging. I KNOW I should have returned it right away, but there were a couple of parties, and I thought maybe DD would wear it the next year. Well......she didn't.

DD and her friends ended up playing dress-up in it, and it was ruined. I mean totally ruined. The chiffon overlay was shredded, and the zipper was pulled out. I didn't realize this till it was too late. I found the dress later wadded up in a ball at the bottom of DD's closet several months later.

Fast forward to tonight. Dsis calls me and her step daughter wants the costume back! I'm freaking out! I now have to tell sis that the costume is ruined, (which she totally understands cause her kids would have done the same thing) Dsis is as surprised as I am that they want it back after 7 years, but what ya gonna do?
BUT the mother of the step daughter most definitely will NOT understand.

I feel so horrible. They want the costume for the 4YO neice.
I'm fessing up, and telling them the truth, along with $100 to replace the costume.

I just want to crawl under a rock right now. :sad2:

Disney princess dresses are 50 percent off at the Disney store right now!!

It'll be alright, fess up and replace it. That way the little girl will get a brand new dress - she'll be thrilled.

I think that after seven years, I wouldn't even know where the costume is. It's good of you to fess up and replace the costume. Don't beat yourself up over it. There are worse things.

Do they really cost 100 dollars?
Don't feel so bad -they would probably prefer a new one anyway. Offering to pay for a new one is pleny compensation.
I don't think I would ask for something back after 7 years.

No biggie... just replace it. I'm sure it will be fine :goodvibes

If it was in yuor possession and ruined, you are doing the right thing by replacing it.

I'd tell her the truth.

Also wanted to add that after 7 years they won't remember what it looked like so you could get the costume, "rough it up" a little and they would never know the difference :teeth:

Oh Geez! You guys are being so nice to me! I forgot to tell you the most important part........

Here goes........

Her grandmother made the costume........ :guilty:

I can't just go out and BUY another one!

NOW do you see why I feel so terrible!

I'm just sitting here CRYING my eyes out! :guilty:

Thanks so much for being so nice.......I hope the mom is as nice as you all are! :goodvibes

If you have a good relationship with her, she will understand, even if at first she is angry. Parents know that sometimes a child can unintentionally destroy something. If you don't have a good relationship with her, well, nothing has changed. ;)

Ok, worried for NOTHING!!!

Got off the phone with Dsis. She told them that the costume is MIA. Stepdaughter and her mother are totally FINE with that. They said that they would just check to see if it was still around. And if it was that maybe the neice could wear it.

Dsis told them how upset I was and that I was going to give them $$ to replace the costume and that stepdaughter's grandmother was willing to make a new one. They FREAKED! NO NO NO!!! Totally unnecessary! No way will we take her money. Not even an option. Doesn't matter. We just thought we'd check to see if the costume was around.

So.......I'm sitting here beating myself up, crying a river and they're totally unphased by all of this. Whew! Another crisis averted.

I still feel bad about the ruined costume. But not as bad as I did before.

Oh, and another thing? Stepdaughter called Dsis later. Told her to tell me to stop crying cause neice wants to be a Superhero now! :confused3 Ha ha!!

I honestly think you were going to do the right thing.

However, 7 years!!! statue of limitations was up wasn't? :rotfl2: Didn't you have some kind of squaters rights or something? :lmao:

Aw, alls well that ends well.

I would have handled it the same way as they did, I would never expect compensation for something that was exchanged so many years ago.

I am sure you feel bad, but honestly....if it REALLY was something they were worried about, they would have asked you for it back 7 years ago.

I dont know if your a Horrible person but thats a long post there
