Do we need a fastpass to have a good view of illuminations on an EMH night in June? I'm afraid the crowds will be crazy! My kids are 6 and 9, so I was hoping to find a place to sit on the grass or the ground, but I also don't want to spend hours holding a spot so we have a good view...so I was thinking a fast pass might be worth it?

No. The fastpass area isn't great.

You should be able to find a good spot about 45 minutes before the show. Just find a (downwind) spot with a clear view of the center of the lagoon.

If you can spare a FP+ for this then sure, but I wouldn't bend over backwards for one. Regardless of whether it is an EMH night or not I have generally never had any major issues finding a decent viewing spot, the only exception I can think of was on NYE.. Just allow yourself about 30 minutes before the show begins to find the best spot possible, the ideal spot is one with a clear view of the central lagoon as stated by @Alesia as alot of the show takes place on the lagoon itself.
