My sister called last-minute yesterday about an Illuminations cruise anytime between May 2 & 15. She was offered May 5th, and when she questioned the CM about early closing, she was told they would be sailing because Illuminations was going to be on for the press event. When my sister questioned this (thanks to DIS), the CM went to double-check and came back to confirm that Illuminations is cancelled for May 5th. She also told my sister that there are four pontoons booked for that night - there are going to be some very disappointed people that evening! 
Good news is my sister was able to book an Illuminations cruise for our two families the following week! Sometimes it is possible to be spontaneous and plan spur-of-the-moment - if you are persistent.
