I'll never complain about making FW reservations through Disney again!

I've read a few threads and posted a time or two about the frustrations of making reservations through the regular Disney number and the fact that those CMs don't always have a clear understanding of FW or the need to clearly state certain things on a reservation (ie. rig size, awning size, etc.)

No more will I complain! I just tried to make reservations for two nights in Hershey Pa.

I call the actual campground and I explained our needs from the beginning, a full hook up, 34ft motorhome, two adults, four children under 10. simple enough, I thought :sad2:

No pleasant voice welcoming me back. No effort whatsoever to find me two consecutive nights in my six week time frame. Finally, after a tremendous effort ON MY PART to give the woman my money, she says, sarcastically, "yeah, this'll be alright as long as you don't mind the train that will run fifty yards from you every twenty minutes around the clock!" :headache: I could go on and on about how unhelpful the person who answered the phone was, especially given that she sitting in the campground that I was trying to book!

I swear, I was a HUGE inconvinience to her. Finally, I suggested I call back another time to continue to try to find two consecutives nights as I will be required to request each date, one by one, "the 4th and 5th?" No, "the 5th and 6th?" and so on..... and she said.... and I quote "I guess you can if you want to" huh? are you kidding me?

Well, Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Disney anymore.... :sad2:

Wow, customer service is just not what it used to be :((

Out of curiosity were you trying to book onsite at Hershey? We’re planning to spend a couple of nights there next summer but :confused3 I'm not having warm and fuzzy feelings about it after reading your post.

Do you have to be exactly in Hershey? We went to PA last year and after trying to find decent priced hotels with suites in Philly (ha ha) settled on a cabin at French Creek State Park. It's about 30 or so miles from Philly and became our home base for travelling through Amish country, a day trip to Hershey and visiting Philadelphia. The cabin cost around $60 night and was a normal sized cabin, 2 BRs one with 2 bunk beds in it. Kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom with shower, grill outside. This was April and during the week so the cabin prices will be more at more popular times. There is a regular campground at the same state park but we didn't go check that out. The area is so beautiful, we woke up one morning to snow on the ground outside our little cabin in the woods (Spring in PA?). You can look into it at the web page for Pennsylvania's State Parks. They were very friendly when I called and made the reservation.

If you are interested in going next summer BOOK NOW! Appearently they get booked really early. They are taking reservations for 2008 now. Also, make sure you take a look at their map first, they seem to be really close to a freight train.

Well, our plan was to drive up one morning (about 2.5 hours for us), set up and enjoy the campground. Then spend the next two days at Hershey Park. Anyone know of another campground close to Hershey Park?

We stayed at the KOA in Elizabethtown last June, its about 25 minutes to Hershey park. They were in the process of upgrading and fixing up the park. It was decent place with nice people. No trains around this park but if the wind was blowing just right it had a farm smell, not surprising since its in the middle of FARM country, just something to consider if you are sensitive to that. If we went back to the area I would stay there again. Our trip included a day at Gettysburg (about 70 minutes from there) A day at Hershey park and a day at the Hershey museum (interesting if you like history and museums).
My biggest criticism during this trip was the obscene cost of pulling a travel trailer on the PA turnpike. It cost us almost $30 to go from the Ohio border to just past Carlisle. The road is poor considered to most and the rest stops are nothing special, compared to Ohio (Costs me about $9 to go almost all the way across) the road and amenities are ancient and it costs almost 3 times as much. I wondered where all the toll money went until we got to Harrisburg and saw that HUGE new buidling that sais "Turnpike commision" on the front of it.

We had thought about camping at Hershey Highmeadow campground this summer for a few midweek days to go to the park and also the new waterpark they are opening this month. I had heard there is a train that runs through there, but we have been to Niagara Falls and few other places where trains are nearby, and it was never that big of a deal to us. I usually pull the map of the campground up or print it out when I call for reservations so that I can see the site that we are reserving. We aren't sure when we can go, but I guess we better figure it out and see if we can get a site. If you are looking for a different campground, try the Jonestown KOA. We stayed there for a few nights last year in May. It is fairly small, but seemed nice and clean and it's fairly close to Hershey.

We have stayed there a few times for the RV show in September. The first year the did not take reservations ahead and I was on the phone the first of January for 45 minutes to get a site. When I called to confirm, they told me they were taking them in advance so I booked again for the next year and then again for this year. I bet it is hard to get reservations in the summer. Especially this summer with their 100 year anniversary and the new water park.

Here is a link to the map: http://http://www.hersheypa.com/accommodations/hershey_highmeadow_campground/map.html

You can see the train tracks at the top. The Crestview area is on top of a hill.

I would say it is worth the wait for the stay. The transportation to and from the park is really nice.

I got the tickets through AAA. They had a nice discount. They went on Friday night for a preview and all day on Saturday for the price of one ticket.

Hope this helps! :cool1:

just wondering how your stay was? worth the trouble ??

We had the same thing in Wytheville VA KOA. I made reservations, told them we had a 29' fifth-wheel with a slide out and they put us in this really narrow site with a pole next to where the slide would come out (forget the awning!). My DH went back in and had them move us to a site we could use. What good are reservations that ask type of rig, if no one looks at them?
