If you're from NC or SC

Does it irritate you when people call it the Carolinas? What is that? I've lived in NC all my life and I feel no allegiance or comradeship with SC. Actually the two states are quite different culturally, legally, and politically.

Do people say the Dakotas too, or the Virginias? If so I've never heard it.

I know no one does this on purpose to offend, it's just like nails on a chalk board to me.

I have lived in North Carolina all my life and it doesn't bother me.

Although I wasn't born and bred there, I lived in SC for a bit and just moved away this summer. People from SC didn't seem to mind it, except when talking about football- both states call their team "Carolina" i.e. we're going to the Carolina game tomorrow! I have friends in both states and they both did that, leaving me perpetually confused :) I didn't find that many people from within ever grouped the states as such.

I agree that they're VERY different states. I would consider moving to NC, but I never plan to return to SC :scared:

Rebound question- do you refer to North and South Dakota separately, or call them the Dakotas? Do you know what sets them apart?

They definitely do call them "the Dakotas".

Yes, South Dakota and North Dakota are regularly referred to as "the Dakotas".

Oh well, guess its just a weird pet peeve of mine!

I don't often have reason to refer to ND or SD but I'd probably refer to them individually since grouping NC and SC bugs me. And I have no idea how the two are different but I'd like to learn!

Calling them 'The Carolinas' doesn't bother me but when someone says "I'm going to Carolina" or "when we were in Carolina...." Yeah that irrates me.

It has never irriated me at all. (And everyone knows that UNC is "Carolina ;-)

You beat me to it! :thumbsup2

North Carolina native here and no, it doesn't really bother me that much. The thing that has always bugged me is people who think that Charlotte is in South Carolina and Myrtle Beach is in North Carolina. That I just don't get.:confused3

I went to visit both states this summer and loved every second of my trip :beach: and would love nothing more than to move somewhere in "The Carolinas" (sorry!) in a few years. I have been saying "The Carolinas" on a regular basis because people here in Minnesota don't care one way or the other which one you mean (and we have been known to say The Dakotas too), and it's just easier to say when talking about both!

Now if I ever do get to move there, I already know it's not said by the locals, and since I plan to do what I can to fit in, I will be dropping it from my vocabulary!

fall08CP, I'm curious, what is it about SC that makes you not want to live there? I'm gathering all the info I can before I decide where we will start looking for jobs in a few years! :listen: So far my two front runners are Asheville and Charleston, but I'm also looking at Raleigh, Charlotte, and Greenville SC. Each has good and bad... trying to figure out where we'd be happiest (and be able to find jobs!)

And everyone knows that USC is "Carolina"

I live in South Carolina and I don't hear people around here say "Carolinas" as much as I hear it from people who Don't live in NC or SC, mostly because if you're already in SC or NC and going somewhere else within SC or NC, you just say the name of the town your going to.

Like I'm going to Charlotte, or I'm going to Charleston

I was born in North Carolina and grew up in South Carolina. The reference to "the Carolinas" doesn't bother me, and I've never really thought about it.

Nationally, everyone knows that "Carolina" means

CAROLINA

What chaps my undercarriage is the decision, whether by the NFL or the team owners, to use "Carolina Panthers" instead of Charlotte Panthers. It was/is a feeble attempt to somehow make this a regional team by referencing a commonality in the names of the states.

The Panthers are not my team because I live in South Carolina. They are located in North Carolina and incorporate some version of that awful, putrid NORTH Carolina blue in their color scheme. Just sad.

Silly, of course Carolina is UNC. The sky is Carolina blue, not Carolina Red.

The use of "Carolinas" doesn't bother me but I do think it's wrong that the Panthers are called the Carolina Panthers. They are in NC and, like a previous poster said, I don't think calling them the Carolina Panthers makes SC feel particularly possessive of them.

Everyone should know that USC is the University of Southern California and Carolina is UNCCH.
