if you upgrade a 7/4 PHP to AP, do you lose the "plusses?"

right now we are planning on purchasing the 7/4 PHP fo rour Dec trip, as we usually do not get back to Orlando within a calendar years time. However,we will actually have 10 days time to go to the parks, and may choose to upgrade to an AP. I knw that unused days are used as a credit toward the AP, but how do the plusses work? Or if we decide to upgrade before we have even used a plus, do we lose it?
I also read that you must do the upgrade within a weeks purchase of the tickets...not within a week of first use? Makes advance purchase kind of tight....any ticket gurus out there?
