If you pay out of pocket, how much do you budget for food?

We are a family of 4, and are budgeting $250 a day total for food/snacks. Does this seem reasonable???
We have at least 1 table service planned per day, some days we have breakfast and dinner planned and will wing it for lunch. Just wondering if we are being realistic or if we should plan on spending more per day. Thanks!!!

Edited to add....2 adults and 2 kids on the childrens menu. Thanks

I think you could do it for $250 if you're not eating at the more expensive places. Have you looked at menus to see what you might order and just added it up to get a ballpark figure on what Disney prices tend to be? Are you big eaters, or tend to share meals?

You can look at either wdwinfo.com or allears.net under Dining and find menus for all the Disney restaurants...reasonably up to date, at least to give you an idea what & how much.:thumbsup2

Maybe I'm not understanding but wouldn't the deluxe dining plan cost you less at $201.96/day for 2 adults and 2 kids on the kids menu?? Or are your kids 10+? Even if that is the case you could get the regular dining plan for 4 "adults" at $183.96 which would cover your 1 table service per day and 1 counter service plus the snack.:confused3

The kids are 7 and 8, but we have a discounted room reservation so we were told we are not eligible for the DDP.

$250 sounds fine for food and snacks. I would budget additional for alcoholic drinks, if you plan to have any.

Edit to add:
Breakfast (character buffet) - $80
Lunch (QS) - $30
snacks/beverage - $15
Dinner (TS) - $125

You mean a room only reservation with a PIN or a public code? We used a 40% off PIN and were able to add the dining plan but I do think you need to buy park passes as well.

We did $150.00 on our last trip. That was two quick serves, and one table (didnt do desserts and stuff all the time) We did make sure we all had refilable mugs though. No problems with $250, you will beable to eat and drink a plenty!

If you booked with Disney Travel Co or TA, you will be able to add DDP as long as you add park tickets to your reservation as well, even with the discounted room rate!!!

If you booked thru Disney or a TA pretty sure you can "buy" a dining plan.

If you have a discount on the room ressie you can still buy the plan.

Of course this is subject to you having park tickets/package, staying onsite as well.

You may want to look further into this.

The $250 estimate is not bad at all....but as someone already mentioned I would budget a little more if you will be enjoying some alcoholic beverages on a regular basis. Those drinks can really add up quick! :)

WE have figured out amount needed for our trip to $1000 for 7 days.

Breakfast in room, Juice,Cakes,Fruit and ceral bars..Were not huge morning eaters.(All bought from local store)

Lunches..ALL QS Peco Bills,CHH,Strarring rolls, Flaming tree,Sunshine seasons

Dinners,50's,Tusker,CP,Via Napoli,HOB's,WCC

Snacks in park and drinks ect.

2 adults 1 teen, 1jr.

I'm on a travel industry room discount reservation. I now realize, I may have been better off trying to get a PIN and then adding dining plan. I dont know- honestly...whenever I tried to figure out what the most cost effective way to go was I just ended up confused. lol. I was under the impression though, that even if you've booked a room using a 30 or 40% off PIN that you couldnt add the dining plan?
We will be buying park tickets when we get down there, staying onsite at the Poly... but it seems like at this point DDP isnt an option. Which is really ok with me- I just want to make sure the amount we're budgeting isnt unrealistic. Seems to be about right. Thanks everyone!

There are certain discounts where it can not be added.. and it sucks! :lmao: we are lucky enough to get the CM discount on our room and we can not add dining.

If you read thru the eat at Disney on $40 a day thread, I think you would see that $250 would be WAY plenty, especially with 2 of them being kids. A character meal will inflate the average, or an expensive dinner show, but they were coming up with very good meal plans at $40 a day for breakfast, CS, TS & snack days.

We are basically planning $45 a day average, as we only have 2 TS meals the entire trip and we will drink water (cup) at least one meal per day. Otherwise counter service is very easy to do under $15 pp in nearly every case.

My 17 y.o. friend and I are going to WDW this June for graduation and are each planning on $50 a day (individually).

I think your budget sounds about right. Even at the cheaper TS places, our family of four often spent at least $75/meal, not including the tip. Places like Coral Reef, Cinderella's Table cost us well over $100. So, it also depends on where you'll be eating.

I don't know anything about the travel industry rate and if there are special rules concerning that. However, if you get a room discount (using a public code or pin) you CAN still add the dining plan (as long as you buy tickets). However, you need to pay full price for the dining plan and tickets.

I think this can be done, but will take some planning and mostly cs for your visit. Take a look ahead at menus to see what/where/cost so you will not be short..;)
It really can add up fast.........unless a lot of snack for meals type stuff.:confused3
have a great trip

I haven't had time to read through that thread, but I will agree that $250.00 for 2 adults/2 kids is plenty. We have eaten pretty much everywhere - been doing 2-3 TS meals per day for years (mostly paying cash - DxDP a few times), so I know prices, and that seems high, since there are 2 kids in the mix.

I should clarify that I don't anticipate the OP means she is going to eat 3 character meals per day, as that amount wouldn't be enough, but if she did 1 character meal, plus a quick serve, a few snacks and a reasonably priced TS (non character), than $250.00 will definitely be enough. Also, if they drink alcohol, that will eat up (pardon the pun) the budget as well. There are very reasonably priced TS restaurants on property, and, you can order adult meals for the kids to share, and that also saves money! Been doing this for years too.

As an aside, at most restaurants (exception of Epcot World Showcase & Downtown Disney restaurants that are not run owned by Disney), you can do kids' meals a la carte, which means that if you don't want dessert, you don't order and don't pay for it. This will save some money, as we've done it many times, as my kids prefer food, and not dessert.

I wish OP luck in figuring out her dining budget! Tiger :)
