well, i'm still trying to think of random DVC scenarios... just making sure i learn/understand all aspects of DVC.

anyway, this is one that stumped me.

if you have a Sept use year, and planned this vacation: BCV studio, check-in 8/30/04, stay 4nights check-out 9/3/04.
which of the following is the way your points would get used up by this ressie?
  • 26pts deducted from your 2003 use year
    AND
24pts deducted from your 2004 use year
  • 50pts deducted from your 2003 use year
  • 50pts deducted from your 2004 use year

(edited the wording of the above choices... replaced "allotment" with "use year")

It is my understanding that if you have points in your 2003 use year when you make the ressies they would use those first..

and if not they would borrow from 2004 for night of 8/30/04 then use the sept use year points for the rest of the vacation...so in theory all of your points would be out of your 2004 use year...

OK experts how did I do....right or not...

8/30 (SUN) = 13 = 2003 UY
8/31 (MON) = 13 = 2003 UY
9/1 (TUES) = 12 = 2004 UY
9/2 (WED) = 12 = 2004 UY

Depending on how many points you have for 2003 & 2004, you could bank and borrow as needed into the other year. 2003 points would have to be banked by the deadline to use in the 2004 use year for the 3rd & 4th night.

Keep in mind ANY unused points will expire on the last day of the month, so the only way you could use 2003 points for the Sept 1 and 2 ressie is to bank those points. Likewise if you want to use 04 points for the nights of the 30 and 31, you would have to borrow the points. Don't assume MS will do this, be specific when you make a reservation what points you will use when. Theoretically they will use borrowed or banked points first, since they can only be used in the year they were moved to, then current year points are used. But always make sure this is done.

Try not to be confused by Calendar Years, think ONLY use year.

Example, if you were using regular calendar years and planned something from Dec 30, 2003 to Jan 2, 2004, it's easy to see you have 2 days in 2003 and 2 days in 2004.

So, for your September Use year, think of Sep 1st as if it were a Jan 1st.

You have the exact same thing, 2 days in the year 2003 and 2 days in the year 2004.

You need to have 2003 year points for your August dates, and 2004 year points for your September dates.

You can make several scenarios to have the right points in the right year. Using banking and borrowing, it's possible you could actually be using points from any year 2002, 2003, 2004 or 2005.

The two August days could be reserved using any of the following: Banked 2002 points, current 2003 points, borrowed 2004 points, or some combination thereof.

The two September days could be reserved using any of the following: Banked 2003 points, current 2004 points, borrowed 2005 points or some combination thereof.

It's your responsibility to keep track of your points, what year they're in, and if they're banked or borrowed. Then when you call MS just inform them which points you want to use for which days.

Just for fun I did some math :bounce:

For the 26 points required for August, there are 378 possible combinations. Just one example: 10 (2002) points, 12 (2003) points, and 4 (2004) points. Note: Normally this would never happen because for your previous reservations you would want to use all banked 2002 points before using any 2003 points, but if for some reason you instructed MS otherwise during the year......;)

For the 24 points required for September there are 325 possible combinations.

Therefore for the 4 day stay, there are 122,850 different combinations you could make as to which points were used where.

Just a little more useless information. :jester:

whoa, Caskbill... 122,850 combinations? heh. :)

anyway, thanks to all for your replies. i think i understand this now.

originally i had used the word "allotment" in my list of the 3 options, and that's where i was getting a bit confused.

basically, the correct answer is
a) 26pts from 2003UY and 24pts from 2004UY.

but the points in your 2003UY or 2004UY could be made up of any mix of points from your 2002 allotment, 2003 allotment, 2004 allotment, or even 2005 allotment. this depends on what you may have banked or borrowed.

is this right?

Yep, you've got it. :D

One other thing just to be sure:

You may bank points at any time and bank any amount of points, even banking some points now, and more later. (all of course subject to banking limits and windows)

However, you may only BORROW points to make an actual reservation. You can't just call and say you'd like to put all your 2004 points into 2003.

You borrow at the time you make your reservation. Say you need a 200 point reservation but only have 150 points in the vacation's timeframe UY. You would have to use ALL the current 150 points and could only borrow the additional 50. You cannot for example use just 100 current points and borrow the other 100, leaving 50 current points in the current use year.

It is possible to use points from three years, and actually this is quite common for those who only vacation once every two or three years.

Example: You own 150 points. You want to take a 400 point vacation.

Year one: Bank all 150
Year two, receive 150 new points and borrow 100 year 3 points and take your 400 point vacation within year 2's UY.
Year three: bank your remaining 50 points into year 4
Year four: use your banked 50 points, 150 point new allocation, and borrow 100 year five points to give you a 300 point vacation for year four.

I won't do the math on how many combinations you could make. :smooth:

And so on.
