If you dye your hair...

I've been dying my hair since my early 20's since I'm cursed with the early gray gene on my dad's side of the family. If I'm looking to pretty much completely cover my gray, I use Natural Instincts. It works wonderfully and adds natural highlights. I usually leave it in for the longest time that they suggest.

I started going gray at 21. I started dying my hair regularly at 25. Now at 39 I am about 50% gray.:scared1: So, this is coming from someone with a lot of hair coloring experience.:rotfl:

Anyway, this is what I do...

I have my hair colored at the salon every 8-9 weeks. I color it myself in between visits. Usually at 4 1/2 weeks. I use Nice & Easy. This saves a lot of money and it still looks as good as the salon.

Recently, I had my hairdresser foil in some highlights that are a slightly lighter than my naturally dark brown hair. I then went a couple of shades lighter the next time I had my hair colored (to mach the highlights)

The highlights made it easier to transition to a lighter shade. Now when I color my hair, the white hair always come out a little lighter than my dark brown hair. The end result is natural looking highlights.

I get a lot of positive comments on the color of my hair, so I think it is working;)

I work in a salon.

There are some tricks to getting color resistant hair to absorb the color. There are also some colors that are made for white and grey hair.

We apply a hair peroxide to the resistant areas frist. Leave it on about 5 minites. This process opens up the hair shaft to except the color.

This occurs mostly on brown and red hair especially when you are trying to stay close to your natural color.

Also a few highlights in the front will help to brighten up your color and hide any hair that did not except the shade you've chosen.

I've been coloring mine for some 25 years now. I do use salon products and have gone lighter over the years. I use a premanent color on the roots and a semi-permanent color on the rest ( the semi-permanent stops the ends from becoming too dark, or too light, and blend the roots to the rest of the color) I do get highlights twice a year.

Good Luck! and do let us know how your color turns out.

I like the 'Perfect 10' too and it really does make your hair glossy. I don't have many grays but the ones I do have are angry, as in they throw off the dye pretty quickly;) However, this kind seems better able to attach it self than the others. Also, I bought some of the Gray Magic they sell at Sally Beauty and think it's helping a lot too, but I don't use it with every brand. That stuff has lasted me years because you only put a few drops in at a time... but its not supposed to be used with peroxide.

I wish I could find a product that just covers the grays. I have enough of those little guys to be a big nuisance. I like highlighting, but I want to leave my natural hair color alone. I'd like it to be permanent too. Big wishes. :upsidedow Ugh.

I am another person who has died their hair for..ahem...years...due to prematurely graying (thanks for the genes grandma!!).

I use L'Oreal Preference...basically because I like the shade they have for auburn hair. I have noticed that as my hair gets more grey, that it looks less flat and gives me more of a "highlighted" look. I also have had to go a step darker in color as the years have gone by. I get many compliments about my color, and actually have had people buy the same color to achieve my results.

Read the directions carefully and do a strand test before you do your first coloring....and you should get good results with just about any good quality hair color. Also, if you mess up (and I have once) Clairol and L'oreal have phone lines you can call and they will help you...they saved my hair once after I picked a verrrrryyyy bad color!!

You'll have to let us know how it comes out :goodvibes I do usually leave it in longer than ten minutes, maybe 15..just keep an eye on it as the time goes by :)

I bought the Natural Instincts on Saturday but after a bad haircut at the salon the same day I didn't dare try coloring...didn't want to walk into the office this morning with both a bad haircut and a bad color job!! So I'm going try it next weekend when DD16 is around to help me.

Also, if you mess up (and I have once) Clairol and L'oreal have phone lines you can call and they will help you...they saved my hair once after I picked a verrrrryyyy bad color!!

That's good to know, thanks!!
