I'm sorry for your loss.
Just to give you another view on the files thing that hopefully will ease the ill will...As someone who knows a retired lawyer from a small practice. The lawyer has to keep all of their files for many years. This means boxes and boxes of files even in a small town or small practice. These files may be in some sort of storage that is not easily accessible, not to mention they may have to move lots of boxes around and sort things to find the files you need.
In addition, there is a very good chance that if they retired prior to the last 10-15 years (or even had their practice during that time) that it was sort of pre-computer days. Yes they were using computers but not in the way and capabilities that we do now. It really may be more of a needing hours to dig through boxes to find one particular file.
