If you couldn't sail Disney

I would sail RCCL for sure. Princess is also good, but I did have some problems on Princess that I think they could have handled differently.

My choices in preferred order would be:

Celebrity
Norwegian
RCCL

Stay away from Carnival! I would only go on Carnival if it was free!

I like HAL a lot. A bit more laid back than DCL, but very good service.

I've sailed on RCCL's Voyager-class ships, Radiance-class, and Vision-class. I like the newer ships, Adventure and Radiance, but I didn't like the Grandeur (Vision-class). RCCL's food is really good. I'd probably give it an edge on Disney, albeit a slight one. I did like Palo better than the alternative restaurant on Adventure, Portofino.

I also like Princess. I've sailed on Golden and Star Princess, which are two of their huge Grand-class ships. I like their Personal Choice dining, where you show up to eat at one of several restaurants whenever you want. They also have the traditional dining option, if you like that.

I have not tried Carnival yet, but will probably try one of their new ships at some point in the next year or so.

RCCL for sure, particularly the Voyager class ships which are quite amazing. (Can't wait for the Navigator this Saturday!!)

Have also sailed Carnival three times..enjoyed every one

Next would be Celebrity, particularly the Millenium-class ships which are a step above their others...

Another big vote for RCCL. This is a very family friendly line also, but great for couples too.Huge areas for kids/teens I agree that the food is better than DCL. Service is also very good. We have cruised with them many times and had a great cruise every time.

 WHERE DO YOU FIND A LIST OF WHICH CLASS THE RCCL SHIPS ARE? I'VE BEEN TO THEIR SITE MANY TIMES AND I DON'T REMEMBER SEEING A LISTOF WHICH SHIP IS WHICH CLASS..:smooth:

Anyone ever cruise Sovereign of the Seas? My best friend of 30+ years and I are going on March 30th for a kid-free vacation. I am afraid that after the Magic I will be sorely disappointed. Of course, we are only paying something like $95 a day for lodging (I've seen it called a closet with a porthole), food, and entertainment, so I guess I have to adjust for that. Really it's just time for us to spend together and catch up as we live 2,000 miles apart.

And, there's always September 2004 to look forward to!

RCCL would get my vote. Food better then DCL and no matter what time we went out looking for a deck chair in the sun there were plenty. Staff just as friendly and although "a closet with a porthole" is a perfect discription of the rooms, we were fine....didn't go on cruise to spend time sitting around in my room.

I am told that Celebrity is fantastic, and costs about 1/2 of DCL.

Friends just returned from a trip on the Milennium (sp?) and are raving about it. They said the family stateroom they had was huge and the kids programs were great. The family stateroom cost about $3500. Her parents had paid for the trip as a gift for the father's 60th birthday and they took the penthouse suite....and only paid $6000 for a week!!!! They also said the food was magnificent. I think our next cruise will be Celebrity. We loved DCL but we need to date other people. :D

We took a 4-night Carnival Fantasy cruise the week before our Magic cruise last month and really enjoyed it. We were very pleased with just about everything (servers could have been better, but were not terrible or anything like that). We had an inside room (veranda room on the Magic) and it was fine. We had plenty of room for the two of us and it was actually kind of nice to have total darkness for those afternoon naps after lunch! We thought the ship was very clean and well maintained, for such an old one. I looked for signs of wear and tear, and never found any. The food was delicious, the entertainment was great, and the price was definitely good too!! :D

This is the only cruise i've been on. My friend from high school and I went along with her co-workers. We had an inside stateroom...pretty small, but we weren't in there too long. I can't compare it to Disney, yet, but I thought it was good. (we went 2 DAY after 9/11 so it wasn't the best trip to begin with).

Have fun, and enjoy it!! (We also were having a NO KIDS cruise when we went. I"d say for a no kids cruise this was good. We didnt see that many other kids on board, so we didn't have to miss our kids as much, know what I mean. Everytime we saw small children, we were like,"oh I miss my little one!!" It was our first time away from our children for that long a time..haha)

patches-4,

The major classes of Royal Caribbean ships are :

Voyager class : Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas (due out in 2004)., These are the largest ships with ice skating rink, rock climbing, pRoyal Promenade, inside cabins with a view etc..

Radiance class: Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas (due in Fall 2003). Slightly smaller than the Voyager class, lots and lots of glass, rock-climbing wall...

"Older class" : Majesty of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, Sovereign of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Legend of the Seas, ... approximately 1/2 the gross weight of the Voyager class ships, main factor against these ships is the very small cabins.

Is there a website or list to learn more about RCCL? I think it looks fun too. How does it compare in price with DCL? I would really like to learn more about it, especially for next year since DCL doesn't offer a cruise for my twins' birthday that year.

Thanks,
DJ

You won't be disappointed. Although I have not yet sailed DCL I am sure you will love SOS. We just got back in mid January from our second cruise (without kids), our first was on Carnival's Fantasy which was also a blast! Carnival was great....definately more of a PARTY atmosphere. Like you said, it's just for you and your friend so enjoy all there is to enjoy on the ship and on the islands. CocoCay is awesome! The rooms are small, yes, but you won't be spending much time there. There aren't many kids on board (or at least visable) so that will be good for you kid free cruise. Just go, have fun and don't worry about the kids back home LOL!

If you are interested in learning more about RCI then request a brochure from their website or stop by a travel agent.Their books are full of nice pics and it is easier to compare the ships in different classes. There is alot of info on cruisecritic on the royalcarribbean boards and many people have posted extensive pics of the ships. There is also a review/trip report board there also.
