Just wondering where people like to go when they can't go to Disney. My husband is retiring and we need some new ideas for vacations. Thanks

beach - Panhandle of florida or ala.

Hilton head, SC has nice beaches also.

Ala has lots of day trips - places 3 to 4 hours away from us. Does you state have a website like this one

We'd cruise, it's nice to get to see multiple places without having to change hotel rooms.

have you done the pacific northwest or Europe? two of our favorite vacations(loved London and Rome, Paris people were just ok)

My parents are both retired and in their 60s and love Alaskan cruises and vacations to Hawaii.

I live in Florida 2.5 hour from the House of Mouse at legal driving speeds.:car:

I know I risk getting flamed from the True Believers around here, but much as I like WDW, it's just too darn expensive.

I can go to the Real Germany for a week cheaper than I can go to Orlando for a week and visit the Pseudo Germany in Epcot. Sad but true. I go to Europe instead of Orlando.

OUterbanks, NC, without a doubt! Love, love love it there in the summer! we have gone there every year for 20 years!! Also, Hawaii if you have never been-you can get good deals on airfare if you book 6 months out & go to Kuaia (sp?) "the garden island" lots to do, but a bit slower paced & goregeous. Horseback riding, waterfalls galore, hiking, watch the surfers on the north shore, ride around in a jeep & expolore, go whale watching...we went last spring & even our 17 year olds loved it! Debbie

I recently took my mother to Savannah, GA to eat at Paula Deen's restaurant. It is a beautiful city, alot of history and the River Street area has some great shopping. We are going to Pigeo Forge, TN this summer and may visit Dollywood whie we are there. We went to Destin, FL, you have the beautiful beaches without all of the teeny boppers and some great shopping.

Savannah and Destin are two our favorite places to visit. Where do you stay when you go there? We haven't been to Savannah in many years but we went to Destin many times over the years and Stayed at the Henderson Park Inn.....but now it is closed. We have missed it so much and can't find another place in Destin like it.

St. John USVI

Stunning beaches, great food and most of the Island is part of the National Parks Service.

I love the US National Parks. The Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Glacier. The Grand Tetons, the Rockies. A cruise through the Inside Passage of Alaska is really nice, but also try to do a tour of Denali. The US has amazing things to offer from coast to coast, and I think we should all try to enjoy the National parks while we can.

I wonder how easily it is to use electric cart vehicles on the trails in national parks? I can no longer walk very far and especially up inclines. Has anyone had any eperience with ecv's in the national parks? Thanks

When we went to Savannah we stayed at the River Street Inn, it is in a portion of the old Cotton Mill. It is part of the historical hotels in Ga and is absolutely the most beautiful place I have ever stayed. It is reasonably priced ($159/night, AAA rate for a double queen room) Hotel that over looks the Savannah River. The webaddress is www.riverstreetinn.com and the pictures on the site don't do it justice. The service was outstanding, they even have turn down service and left a homemade chocolate on the pillow. Below are the River Street shops. I did alot of research before I found this place and for the location the price is great. We were two blocks from The Lady and Sons (Paula Deen's restaurant) and got to eat there twice that weekend. I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is. The opnly problem was that initially we had to park in a parking garage on the opposite corner and it was a little bit of a difficult walk back to the hotel, but well worth it. I will never stay anywhere else. This was our first trip to Savannah.

When we went to Destn, we stayed at the Best Western Summerplace Inn that was right on the main highway that runs through Destin (I think it is Hwy 98, but not sure). It was nice and right across the street from the beach, and I would stay there again, but it certainly didn't compare to the hotel in Savannah.

Enjoy your travels and I hope that you can get to Savannah soon, as it is very beautiful.

We have spent many hours down by the river there and especially remember the place where dh ate countless pecan pralines!! At that time there was an older gentleman making them by the name of Killer lol! That was about 15 years ago I think. We also went to Charleston a couple of times and enjoyed that a lot too. We went on a Home Tour there that they have every spring I think. And we visited plantations and the grand houses and gardens were beautiful. If I remember right Hilton Head Island is close to Savannah and we would go there as well and enjoy the beach. Hilton Head had a restriciton on billboard signs and other signs, all the signs were tastefully small. We hope to go back again soon, we love that area. thanks so much for sharing your experience and we will certainly look into staying at the riverstreet hotel when we go.

If I had someone to go with: Beach destinations. Always wanted to do Acapulco. Hawaii is high on my list too.

If it's a solo trip: Cities! Kinda like WDW, but different in that it's self contained, transportation is easy and there are an endless amount of things to do-- New York, Seattle, San Fran, Athens, Tokyo, Paris and Prague are all high on my "to do" list. I get to Toronto 4-6 times a year, so that's probably my favorite.

Thanks for your ideas. Where do you stay when you go to the Panhandle or Hilton Head? We love Hilton Head but haven't been there in quite a few years. We go to Deston a lot but our Wonderful Henderson Park Inn is closed now and we can't find a place we like after being spoiled by Henderson Park Inn. Thanks

I wish I wasn't afraid to cruise. I took a Windjammer Cruise a long time ago and we got into a terrible storm in the bahamas and had to be rescued....just can't get over that experience!! Wish I could though because cruising seems like it would be so much fun!

I have been to San Francisco area and loved it and want to go back to California and see the National Parks there. DH wants to stay in the U.S. for now. thanks for your ideas.

Thanks for your response. Glad your folks are enjoying their retirement. We hope to get to Hawaii again. We have been to Maui and Honolulu. Which if the Islands do your parents like best?
