Toby is my 12 yr old Poodle. He is the litter mate of Lacy (the dog that had the severe epilepsy and glaucoma a year ago) We let their coats grow long over the winter and in the spring we have them shaved down. Toby got his shave Friday and we noticed that he had lost a lot of weight. (He was 22 pounds) We weighed him and he was down to 14 pounds. We thought we would make an appointment for him at the vet when they opened on Monday.

This morning we noticed he was shivering and acting lethargic. We gave him his traditional Sunday morning eggs and he threw them back up undigested minutes later 30 minutes after that he started wheezing when he tried to breathe.

We called his vet (he is the kind that will take calls on his days off) but he wasn't at home. We spoke to his wife and she had us take his temperature. It was 2 degrees below normal. She told us to look at his gums - we did and they were pale white. She told us to get him to the emergency vet and she would have her husband call us when he got home this afternoon.

We get to the emergency vet at the same time as an older man and a tiny Maltese. They take Toby right back and told us they would call us in soon. As we are sitting there I watched the tiny Maltese die in it's owners arms The nurse asks us to come in to the examining room. She closes the door and then the doctor comes in. He said "I'm sorry but your dog has passed away". I lost it. I completely lost it and screamed. It was realized in seconds though that he had the wrong people and that it wasn't Toby that had died. It wasn't soon enough for me however.

After numerous tests and disproven theories of what was wrong with Toby it was found that his body is not producing red blood cells like it should. He is now in the doggie hospital receiving a transfusion and in an oxygen tent. Needless to say my heart is breaking.

Toby is my little man. He's been at my side for 12 yrs. He was there for the good, he was at my side when I made the move to leave my abusive husband, he was the encouragment I needed to go on when my life was at its darkest and I didn't think I could. His pleading look was the reason why I put that bottle of pills back on the shelf and walked away from an easy escape.

I can't even fathom saying goodbye to him.

He's not in pain. They are clueless right now as to why his red blood cell count is so low. If it drops 2 more points he could die. If you could say a little prayer for him it would mean more to me than you would ever know.

Lauri I am so sorry to hear about Toby. I will say a prayer for him that he has a speedy recovery. I know how it feels to have a sick pet. It's a very hard thing to go through. They are more than pets they are family members. I have tears reading your post. Sending truckloads of pixie dust and prayers for you, Matt and Toby.

Laureen,

Just to let you know that my dog family and I are sending prayers your way from Colorado. May the Creator guide your vet's experience and knowledge so that he can help Toby as best as is possible. When you can, please let us know how Toby is doing.

These little guys are our family, our kids, and our hearts break for them when they are ill...I know what it feels like to have a "member" of the family sick, and prayers do help, so consider tons of prayers from your Florida family on their way, w/ lots of PD thrown in for good measure.. Hang in there, We love you ..

My prayers for Toby.

Ashley

...........................................Lots of Prayers and Pixie Dust heading your way!!..................................................

Lauri,

You and Toby have been in our thoughts and prayers all day. Your call could not have come at a more opportune time today as we were just leaving for church. Please know that the Lord will hear all of these prayers and His will shall be done. Toby has been a great companion to you for many years and your love for him will be eternal. Faith is an important thing to have and is made stronger each time it is used. You must have faith that things will work out for the best and your love for Toby will continue to give him strength.

Jeff

Matt went early this morning to pick Toby up from the animal hospital so we could move him to our regular vet's clinic. I stayed home with the other three dogs. Reilly, the youngest, is taking Toby's illness the hardest. He spent half the day hiding behind the recliner in the den crying. This morning after Matthew left he crawled under the covers with me and cried. How he knows what is happening is beyond me.

Matt brought Toby back to the house for a visit with his "brother and sisters" before we headed out to our vet. To say that Reilly was happy to see him is an understatement.

5 minutes later we were back out to our vet. They had been communicating with the emergency hospital and apparently Toby had blood in his urine late last night which is not good.

He's there right now back on his IV and they will be doing some abdomen x-rays and ultrasounds to see if they can find the cause as to why his body is destroying his red blood cells.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words and prayers. They mean so much to me and to Matthew right now.

Lauri,
Our thoughts and prayers our with you both, and for the rest of your "kids". I wish you all the best.
