Toby is my 12 yr old Poodle. He is the litter mate of Lacy (the dog that had the severe epilepsy and glaucoma a year ago) We let their coats grow long over the winter and in the spring we have them shaved down. Toby got his shave Friday and we noticed that he had lost a lot of weight. (He was 22 pounds) We weighed him and he was down to 14 pounds. We thought we would make an appointment for him at the vet when they opened on Monday.

This morning we noticed he was shivering and acting lethargic. We gave him his traditional Sunday morning eggs and he threw them back up undigested minutes later :( 30 minutes after that he started wheezing when he tried to breathe.

We called his vet (he is the kind that will take calls on his days off) but he wasn't at home. We spoke to his wife and she had us take his temperature. It was 2 degrees below normal. She told us to look at his gums - we did and they were pale white. She told us to get him to the emergency vet and she would have her husband call us when he got home this afternoon.

We get to the emergency vet at the same time as an older man and a tiny Maltese. They take Toby right back and told us they would call us in soon. As we are sitting there I watched the tiny Maltese die in it's owners arms :( :( :( The nurse asks us to come in to the examining room. She closes the door and then the doctor comes in. He said "I'm sorry but your dog has passed away". I lost it. I completely lost it and screamed. It was realized in seconds though that he had the wrong people and that it wasn't Toby that had died. It wasn't soon enough for me however.

After numerous tests and disproven theories of what was wrong with Toby it was found that his body is not producing red blood cells like it should. He is now in the doggie hospital receiving a transfusion and in an oxygen tent. Needless to say my heart is breaking.

Toby is my little man. He's been at my side for 12 yrs. He was there for the good, he was at my side when I made the move to leave my abusive husband, he was the encouragment I needed to go on when my life was at its darkest and I didn't think I could. His pleading look was the reason why I put that bottle of pills back on the shelf and walked away from an easy escape.

I can't even fathom saying goodbye to him.

He's not in pain. They are clueless right now as to why his red blood cell count is so low. If it drops 2 more points he could die. If you could say a little prayer for him it would mean more to me than you would ever know.

((((((((Lauri)))))))))

I'll definitely keep Toby in my prayers, and my special line to St. Francis! I hope he's feeling better soon. Bless that little pup!

PD heading your way and prayers being lifted. I sure hope he is up and about at home with you soon.

Lauri, I soo hope Toby will be ok. We just lost our lab to cancer afew months ago, he was the the one who was a comfort to my son when his dad and I divorced 2 yrs ago, I know how close we get to our beloved pets. Hang in there girl, maybe its something the doc can treat. {HUGS}

Awwww. :( That's so sad and so scary. I'm going to say some prayers for him. I hope they find out what's going on and get him back up on his little feet again. I will keep him in my prayers. :(

That's so sad about the maltese. :(

My very best wishes, Lauri, for little Toby. They can be so very much a part of our lives, part of our families. A prayer said for Toby.

Thinking good and positive thoughts for Toby, ML. I hope he is better soon.
