And why?

We are planning on 6 days for what I think will be our May trip. Right now we aren't planning on using DDP. Instead we are trying for 3 sit down meals the entire trip w/ counter service and snacks the rest of the time.

So yeah if you only had THREE choices, they would be?????

FYI:
Our travel party will consist of
5 adults ages: 54, 53, 38, 33 and 30
2 children ages: 8, 5

Thanks!

Chef Mickey's - Classic character dining

Akershus in Epcot WS for Character dining (if one of the kiddos is a little girl), if not, Le Cellier in Canada or Biergarten in Germany. I think having a sit down in the WS is a classic Disney experience. Biergarten is such a fun expensive! I think Le Cellier has great food. Really, anywhere in the WS for one of your choices, based on your taste, but just overall having the WS dinner, wander the WS in the evening experience

Crystal Palace in MK for the magical Magic Kingdom feel

I am assuming you don't want to do any of the more expensive options, such as signature dining, castle or shows since you're trying to limit your food budget so I didn't include those.

Chef Mickeys.. Whispering Canyon Cafe, great for everyone lots of fun,and last do a more adult meal but still fun for everyone, maybe Cal Grill..

The 5 year old is a girl.

On previous trips we have eaten at:
Crystal Palace
Tusker House (the character breakfast)
LeCellier
50s PTC
1900 PF
Kona
WCC

BUT my daughter was only 2 then so she doesn't remember the characters. :(

I was considering Akershus or Chef Mickey already. Hmmm....

Teppan Edo, Boma and Kona Cafe

La Hacienda and Yak & Yeti would be my backups

In 2009, we went to Disney's Hilton Head for 5 or 6 days and then shot down to Disney and stayed at OKW for 3 nights. We did not go to the Disney parks, but did 1 day at Sea World and spent some time at Downtown Disney. We paid out of pocket for Ohana (a must do for us), Cape May (was a new try for us and it was good) and T-Rex (another new try and we were pleasantly surprised). It's hard to pay cash for buffets and family style places though....they are pricey, but most of our faves are AYCE. Of all the non-AYCE places (and non-signature places) we've done, I'd pick Sci-Fi, Coral Reef and Yak-N-Yeti. If I were to pick all AYCE places that we've done, I'd pick Ohana, Boma and either Cape May or Whispering Canyon. If I had to pick 3 places we haven't done, I'd pick Via Napoli, Kona and Crystal Palace. If I wanted to do all 3 signatures, I'd do Yachtsman (new), Narcoossees (new) and Le Cellier (a fave).

I know: with young children the character buffets are appealing but they are SO darn expensive. And other than the character interaction, you don't get your money's worth. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed the character meals on our 09 trip but (we were on DDP and also my youngest was free then so that helped out a ton) man the price on those things is outrageous. And IMO so is the DDP now as well.

I agree!!!! We are going with DH's entire family for Xmas and are NOT getting the DDP. We have annual passes and SIL is getting annual passes too, so we will both get the TIW card...at least we'll get a 20% discount (except for 12/24 and 12/25 :sad2:). My FIL LOVES AYCE and wanted to do as many as those as possible. I tried to sway everyone away from that because they are so pricey, but we ended up with 4 out of 6....

With the cost of DDP going up $5 more in Jan, I don't think we'll ever get it again :wave2:. I remember the 1st time we had the DDP...it was like $37-40 and it included apps and tips...it was a great deal then.

Crystal Palace
50's Prime Time
Kona
We also like Le Cellier

One of our favorite places is the HDDR it costs more but the food and entertainment is awesome.

WCC... my favorite right now. Everything I had was good.

Le Cellier... Lived up to my expectations.

Trails End... Everything tasted really good. Nice buffet & good value.

Hmmmm... hard to say, but if I had to only pick 3 I would choose the following:

The Biergarten: Fun, lots of food and very good beer!

Tusker House Breakfast: The honey ham with the sweet/spicy mustard sauce and yam casserole are soooo good. The characters are very interactive and so much fun for the kiddos.

Liberty Tree Tavern: We have been there on both of our trips and the food has been so good each time. The meats are very juicy and tender and the stuffing with gravy is delicious!

My runner-ups would be:
Teppan Edo
Whispering Canyon Breakfast
50's Prime Time Diner

We always take free dining when offered over any discount as food just add's up to fast. but answer to your question:

Yachtsman Steakhouse
Kona's Grill in the Poly
O'Hana's with----Boma's a real close third pick:thumbsup2

and all for dinner

My family is doing the same thing. The dining plan is just too expensive. We don't always eat dessert or drink soda so it's just not worth it.

We will probably eat at Crystal Palace and Tusker House for breakfast. We might also do Via Napoli in the World Showcase.

For your group, I'd recommend

1. Via Napoli. The atmosphere is so great and the prices are much better than at Tutto Italia.

2. Sci-Fi Diner or 50's Prime Time. Sci-Fi Diner is the first TS my family ever ate at Disney back in 1997.

3. T-REX or the Rain Forest Cafe. The theming is just so wonderful. The portions are huge so it's easy to split a plate or order an appetizer.

1. Crystal Palace for breakfast--the food is good and it's a tradition for our family.
2. 50's PT--another tradition--food is ok, but we have always had a great time.
3. Probably 'Ohana--my daughter loves it.

Chef Mickey's Breakfast
1. The food is better at breakfast than dinner.
2. It's classic character dining and will allow for great character photos.
3. The Contemporary is a Disney classic.

Flying Fish
1. The food is amazing. (Get the snapper...YUMMY!!!)
2. The Boardwalk is so neat. It is one of the most immersive environments at Disney World. You really do feel as if you've been transformed.
3. Don't eat dessert at the Flying Fish. Walk over to the Beach Club and get some ice cream at Beaches and Cream. It'll give you another cool Disney experience.
4. Even though it's a signature, it's kid friendly.

Whispering Canyon Cafe
1. The Wilderness Lodge is beautiful.
2. The food is home-cooked and rather good.
3. It's just really fun. Ask for ketchup...
4. The kids will enjoy it.

I tried to give a variety of suggestions so you can get a broad experience - character, signature, and family fun.

3. T-REX or the Rain Forest Cafe. The theming is just so wonderful. The portions are huge so it's easy to split a plate or order an appetizer.

Ooh, I never thought of those two. And they're not on the DDP either, right?
