My kids bought a Plumeria Plant at DTD for my Mother-in-law. We thought it would be perfect for her as she grows orchids. We deliberated over color etc and we had a great conversation with the young gentleman who was working at the kiosk. We told him who it was for, and we told him where we were from. He told us to make sure the plant came indoors for the winter etc (We live in upstate NY near Buffalo..he joked about the cold and snow etc.). We also talked about us flying home that day and how we hoped the flights were not delayed due to hurricanes etc.....We asked about putting the plant into water right away and he said it would be fine for a few days....We then talked to him about EPCOT etc.......Ok so we pay for the plant (DH had to pay for it in one of the stores and hand the gentleman the reciept) We are given the plant/root wrapped up in tissue in a Disney plastic bag. I ask about directions and he tells us they are in the bag with the plant and that there is an address so we can read the directions online and that it is also in the bag . We go to the car and put the plant in the luggage....in with the clothing so it will not get squished (it is a root not really a plant). We drive to the airport, check the bag and wait for the flight. Flights are delayed. We finally get home 10 hours late...no bags. Bags come in the next day late. Ok we open up the luggage and take out the root. The kids can't wait to give it to Grandma. We unwrap it so we can plant it (in the cactus potting soil that we were told to buy for it)and when we read the directions it says that the plant should NEVER be put in plastic because it can't breath and it should not be put in the checked on luggage or it will freeze and die.Now the kids are upset...."We had it in the Mickey plastic bag...it was under the plane". ARGGGGGGGGG. We planted it anyway and we will see what happens. If you buy one of these plants....make sure you carry it on the plane and you take it out of the bag !!! I hope the darn thing grows. I did email the company and they said send it back with the reciept...I can't find the reciept....its probably still in the plastic bag!! Oh well. :daisy: It may still grow.

We bought four of them in EPCOT during the flower festival and they were extremely nice about going over everything including how to transport it home. I was so paranoid about killing them before we got home that I hand carried them on the plane and in the car until we got home. Luckily they have rooted and have a ton of leaves on them. I can't wait for next year when we should start seeing some flowers! Good luck...hopefully they'll still make it for ya'! :goodvibes

My parents got us a couple of these back in May, one is really starting to leaf out (no flowers yet), but the other one is a bit stunted. I wouldn't be too worried about the fact that it was in checked luggage, it would have been insulated by the luggage and the clothes inside, especially if it was buried in the middle of your luggage. It might just be a slow grower to begin with. Give it at least 3 months before you give up.

I bought 4 plumerias during the Flower and Garden Festival and they did take a while to root. I now have lots of leaves and hope they will bloom next year. I left mine in the plastic bag for 4 days before I planted them, so I think yours should be okay.

Thank you for all the wonderful replies! The poor little thing is so ugly sticking out of the pot...hee hee...I am hoping it roots for Grandma and for the kids. :flower:

don't worry aobut your plant - the darm things are indestructible! We bought one on our honeymoon trip to Hawaii and left it in its package for months as it was lost in our luggage. I finally potted it up and started watering and it grew all kinds of leaves and flowered the next summer. the following winter I stuck it in the garage and didn't water it but twice. that spring I cut it in three pieces - let the ends dry out and potted all three. Two are growing like crazy, big and gorgeous, the third is a little slow. Your will be fine - just don't be too nice to it!!!

Youngest DD whispered "Grow, Grow" to the plant. I think she heard me saying it...Oh God please let this darn thing grow"!!! If worst comes to worst I am going to buy a flower and stick it in the pot and pretend it grew!!!!

Not quite related: If you have or get potted plants with a foil (or plastic) wrapper on the pot, immediately cut holes in the bottom of the foil. This will help prevent waterlogging. Plants will die from overwatering.

we bought 3 during the flower & garden festival in 04 and they rooted with no problem. We bought some more in Oct and only one survived.
This year one of the original 3 is actually flowering.

I can't wait to see the others flower. We live in FL but we brought ours in over the winter.
