If you bring a gift to a party host/hostess

I never expect them to use or serve whatever I've brought. Its a gift to say thank you for the invitation, not to supplement what they already have.

It depends - my DH brought back a vintage $45 bottle of wine from China to bring as a gift for a party and I told the hosts to save it for a special occasion.

I don't think they realized it was a 16 year old bottle at first as they were going to open it for the party. In hindsight I should have given it to them another time instead of at a party where they were popping open lots of bottles.

(edited to add I did bring a box of bakery cookies which they were free to do with as they pleased )

etiquette experts state that hostess gifts of wine and food should not be opened and served at the party. It is meant as a gift. Also, most people have the menu and drinks planned in advance and your gift may not fit in.

Unless, you ask can I bring something and they tell you something specific to bring. But in that case, it would not be considered a hostess gift.
