Just a FYI to my Budget Board friends. There is a class action lawsuit that involves laptops with a certain nVidia chip. If your laptop if one of the affected models, they are actually replacing the laptops with a new one. :thumbsup2

Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't qualify, but you might want to check and see if yours does. Various models of Dell, HP, Compaq, and Apple laptop are listed. You can see the complete list here: http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/affectedmodels.html

Thanks for posting this! My DH's laptop looks like it qualifies, but he may not want to give up his computer for 6-8 weeks (he uses it for his consultant business). I guess he'll have to make that decision! My DS has an older HP laptop that we bought JUST before the claim period -- he was hoping that his qualified!

That sounds like exactly what happened to our laptop that we bought in 2008and was useless by 2010 after several trips (with and without warranty) to the repair shop and lots of $$. Too bad the lawsuit only counts for the USA as I am sure this was the problem with ours but we are Canadian so the thing is just a piece of garbage.

This affected my laptop but fortunately I fought hard enough with Dell that they replaced my mother board for free quite some time ago.

They're actually not all replacements. Depending on the model, some are repairs.

Mine qualifies for a replacement, has several of the described issues, and I am still not sure I want to part wth it for the length of time specified. :(

My laptop is going to be replaced, under this settlement. It was nothing but trouble since I bought it and I was going to save for a new one, but they sent me a postcard about this settlement and I just did the paperwork yesterday-we'll see what happens!

Thanks for posting, sent info to my friend who had a HP:thumbsup2

What are the "symptoms" of this?? I have a older macbook pro that the screen went black on I can hear it turning on but the screen is black. I'm not sure how old my computer is it may be older than 07.
Thanks

I don't think you have to have "symptoms" to qualify for this. From what I read, people with laptops that still work well are submitting for the settlement.

I really don't know much more about it, because my old laptop didn't qualify.

Thanks for sharing this info.

If I am reading the info on the website correctly, only HP laptops are replaced with new ones. Dell/Compaq must be sent to them for repair. :(

I'm torn. I have an eligible Dell laptop, with 8600M chip, but haven't had any problems, after 2 1/2 years. The risk involved in sending the computer back-and-forth for repair, and the inconvenience of being without my laptop for an indefinite period of time, makes me wonder if it is worth going forward with the replacement.

Does anyone have more detailed information on what percentage of chips will eventually exhibit these problems, and in what time-frame?

Never mind... I went through the process of filing a claim, and this was the reply:
Based on the information you have provided, your notebook computer is not eligible to participate in this settlement.
I take that as good news. :woohoo:

I have lots of problems with my Dell laptop, but unfortunately, my model number is not included.

Hmmm.... I'll have to remember to connect to this at work and check the laptops there. I've had to have the motherboard on my HP replaced 2x already and they have another that has had similar problems.

I had an HP laptop that did this as well. Got the same model again (bought new one) and after two years in October the hard drive started dying after having a computer guy look at it. Since he did something to it I cannot get on it normally because he wanted to take it and make us pay $300 when we can just take it to Staples or someplace similar for much cheaper. Just decided to get a Compaq that was a cheaper computer because a computer last 2 years is ridiculous.

Sigh...we had one of these, but got rid of it recently because it finally conked out completely on the video side. Wish I had known about this before we disposed of it. Oh well...

Thank you sooo much for posting this!!

DH was in the middle of taking an online test last year when the video on his HP Pavillion just disappeared. It was really bad timing.

It's been sitting in our closet because we didn't know what to do with it!!

Thank you SO MUCH! We filled out all the paperwork, his model was one of the affected!!

I was thinking along the same lines as MeekoB... we ditched an HP a few months ago, that died about two years ago... I wonder if it was related to this issue.
