More scandals on the DIS?? How could that be?

I am disappointed that the bashing was done by the MODERATORS who close other threads when other people do this very same thing in a public forum. Moderators are supposed to be unbiased aren't they? Shouldn't that type of message been in the form of a PM??

well first off, I didn't bash anyone, I just pointed out I knew Patrick was very hurt over having to cancel the meet.
Seems to me Dan could have figured out that it would hurt Patrick further by hearing about people that had non-refundable tickets and as CC pointed out it had nothing to do with the thread....
So we can take sides and argue about this untill doomsday but I think Dan is the only one that can really answer and have it mean anything.

Sorry you couldn't have the meet, Patrick. I am really amazed with people like you, Towncrier, and Alex (sure I have forgotten somebody there!) that open your homes to us. I think that shows a real generosity of spirit and high level of hospitality and that is to be admired. {{{HUGS}}}

Gotta say that I so agree with this statement. I also think its really a leap of faith to host a DIS Meet party in one's own home, and certainly in the true spirit of friendship. Long live DIS meets, may they continue bringing people together.

Dan would not try to be mean, I thought he was being kind as always! I think sometimes people read things the wrong way, depending on their own thoughts.
Only think I have seen in Chicago is the airport! Glad your weekend weather is great Dan ! We have a little 2 day trip planned and our weather should be ok too!

I just think some things don't HAVE to be said and obviously Patrick knew Dan was speaking of him and it appears to me that he feels badly.

But like Alex said, only Dan can explain what he really meant, I suppose we lose a lot of communication when using the internet. At least I would hope that would be the case.

I spent 30 minutes composing a reply to this thread only to have my computer eat it before posting it. Perhaps my first reply was way too long winded. So here are my thoughts (again):

In a nutshell, my plans to come to Chicago this weekend were undermined by a series of unrelated events (church camp, graduation parties, last minute business trip to NYC, DW Sue contacted to do wedding flowers). What was supposed to be a family trip to the windy city was rapidly turning into another solo venture by you-know-who.

Having hosted three DIS picnics (none of which were as large as the picnic at Patrick's last summer), I know just how much time and effort is involved.

As far as priceline'd hotel rooms, I have the same attitude as NancyIL. It's not a big deal. I've saved enough from advice on the DIS to more than pay for that room. No big deal. I'm just sorry that I'm going to miss a chance at some nice weather.

I'm sorry that your plans for the picnic this weekend didn't work out Patrick.

And like snoopy, I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend no matter where they are.

Moderator or not... I still make an effort to not take things personal on the boards. Unfortunatly, in this case, its unavoidable. I do not feel I have to go into the series of events that caused the ultimate cancellation of the meet. I felt terrible that it had to happen. I also feel terrible for anyone who lost money becouse of it. I did not need to be embarresed openly about it on the board. I make my own judgement about what was posted at the beginining of this thread, you of course make yours. The words speak for themselves. Moderators are just disers who help out with the site. Enough...

Patrick, you have nothing to feel bad for and nothing to apologize for in regards to the meet. It didn't work out. Meets get canceled for many reasons and you shouldn't feel bad for that. And maybe again I am blind, but honestly I didn't see a thing wrong with the OP because I feel that Patrick shouldn't have anything to be sorry for and really didn't even occur to me at all when I read it. It isn't his responsibility for all traveling and truthfully we COULD have gotten a meet together w/o using Patrick's home and posts were made but no replies to get together were given. At any rate, many, like myself, like Chicago enough to stay over night and no offense, I don't need a meet to make my weekend trips to Chicago good. Like John, I am very sorry I have to miss the good weather and I almost wish I could find a way to go. It would be a nice way to get away from the crap I dealt with this week at home.

What really bothers me most is that I am someone afraid to start a thread and something like this really makes me even more afraid. I don't want to feel like I need to defend myself for a wrong word. I would hope that I am given the benefit of the doubt, but I am afraid that I wouldn't. And with that I will hush... lack of sleep becuase of my overheated house has probably made me too cranky.

I will wish EVERYONE a wonderful weekend... traveling or not good weather or not.

I had the pleasure of attending Patrick's DIS Meet last summer, and I cannot tell you all how hospitable he was to so many members of the DIS. He and his wife are sweethearts and they entertained, fed and socialized for hours on end. Patrick is truly one of the best people here and I just wanted to let him know how much we appreciated that gathering last summer.

I travel to Chicago approximately two or three times per month, so I would have planned on being here in town whether or not there was another gathering this weekend. As others have stated, being left with plans to be here in Chicago for a summer weekend whether or not Patrick's plans fell through, is certainly not too difficult to deal with! This city is fabulous with so much to see and enjoy.

I agree with Alex that Dan can surely shed some light here on his post and clear up why we needed to hear this. I do not see anyone with such generosity like Patrick showed us all last year in sharing his home with so many folks.

I always try to look at thing from the perspective of others, and try to put myself in their shoes.

If I had been planning a DIS meet at my home and had to cancel it, and then someone posted about those who had "non-cancellable hotel and transportation ressies" that had planned on coming to a meet I had to cancel, I would feel hurt by this post. It's as simple as that. The inference is that cancelling the meet hurt others. The post could have EASILY been made without reference to folks who may or may not have lost money planning to come to a meet.

It may not have been intended that way, and I certainly hope it wasn't, but that is how I would have interpreted it if I had been in the shoes of others.

Patrick's meet was so awesome last year!! I still can't believe that Patrick just flung open his home doors to so many people. I never even heard any posts complaining after I snuck into his bedroom and started stuffing jewelry into my pockets. I had to stop after I got scared though when I found that drawer with all that leather bondage stuff in it.

Sorry, I don't see where Dan said people lost money and it's Patrick's fault. Just him saying people were going to be in town reguardless and he hoped they had a great time and the weather is good.

He has an awesome reputation as being a nice guy so I would have no reason to read into any further than that. Maybe there are other issues here.

well lvstnk, I have had DIS meets at my house and I totally understand how Patrick feels! I would feel horrible if I had to cancel a meet and people lost money.
Since Patrick cancelled the meet it's pretty obvious he was referring to him!
But like I have been saying, I am sure Dan will be happy to clear this up!

Like I said there must be other issues. I am sure he does feel, bad but that doesn't mean Dan was trying to make it worse.

I could never picture Dan doing that but maybe you know otherwise.
