If writing to a State Representative, is it "Mr? Honorable? Sir?"

Hi-

Writing to my House Representative and am unsure how to address the letter. Is it, "Dear Representative Jack" "Dear Honorable Joe" "Dear Sir"?

Oh my, there's so many possible jokes here! But I'll refrain.

I looked this up once and "The Honorable" and "Representative" were what I found.

The previous poster is right. You'd address it to:

The Honorable Joe Smith
Address, etc.

or

Representative Joe Smith
Address, etc.

The salutation would then be:

Dear Representative Smith

Of course, if you're upset with what your representative is doing, then you change it to, "Dear Idiot." LOL! OK, that probably won't win you any points, but it would feel good to write it.

Nah.... I'm asking for him to change me from out-of-state to in-state. I think I'll be as sweet and pleasant as possible.

I did remember reading something in our history class' primary source book just before the Civil War that reminds me of this. It was after a huge hooplah in Boston about sending a fugitive slave back to the South. Someone actually wrote a letter to the President and opened it with, "Dear Cheif Slave Catcher of the United States..."
