If we are bringing our own wheel chair

Do I need to stop by Guest Services and pick up a GAC? My daughter is able to walk, but she can't do anything for too long. She can't walk, stand for long and she can't sit for long. She has JRA and has to keep moving so she doesn't get stiff.

She is in a REALLY BAD flare right now and she wants to bring her WC just in case..So should I get a GAC?

It's not necessary, but certainly helpful. Make sure you also pick up a guidebook for guests with disabilities (also at Guest Relations). It will save you a lot of time wandering around finding the WC accessible entrances.

There is a section about Guest Assistance Cards (GAC) in the disABILITIES FAQs thread near the top of this board (or click the link in my signature).

The real simple answer is, if what she needs is to be able to bring her wheelchair into lines with her, you don't need a GAC. If she has other additional needs that will not be met by just having the wheelchair, then go to Guest Relations in any park, explain her needs and ask for a GAC.

It is hard for me to get out of that mentality that I have to use an ECV all the time at Wal-Mart for example. It is perfectly alright to use the wheelchair to get to the Main Street then walk around for a while then hop in and wheel over to Adventureland. Since she might not be using the wheelchair then you would want to get the GAC.

Do keep in mind though that using a GAC may allow her to (for example) avoid the part of a line that includes stairs, but will not usually mean a shorter walk.

My son has JRA and Cystic Fibrosis. He can't do Disney without his wheelchair. He would be in so much pain and wouldn't be able to walk for days Take a wheelchair. You will be glad you did in the end!
