If they remade the Wizard of Oz today.....

They would colorize the first reel.

They would use CG instead of sets. Computer animation for the characters and other digital effects to make their body parts do 'funny' or jokey things.

Every line would be turned into some kind of snarky remark. Throw in some pop culture references to Lady Gaga so that young kids would 'get it.'

Sardonic humor. People would be put down with funny insults.

Slapstick humor, laughing at people getting hurt. Some character would get hit in the groin to make you laugh.

More action and violence.

Jim Carey as the Cowardly Lion, Will Ferrel as the Tin Man. Johnny Depp as the Scarecrow. Flavor of the Month as Dorothy.

It would make millions the first weekend and spawn countless sequels.

And there would be a fart or booger joke in there as well.

And of course, 3D. :)
And there would be spin off movies in later years...
"the wicked witch returns"
"Toto's adventures"

Actually you made a few errors... first you put all white actors in the main roles... The studios would never go for that, they would have to put in at least 1 hispanic and 1 african american so that they could market the movie to those two groups... They would also have to change the Munchkins to be non-humans or risk generating a negative PR hit by short people... or would have to change the name they were given because it has negative connotations.... I'm also not sure they could do the flying monkeys because PETA might be afraid that some of the monkeys could be injured.... In short the movie would have never been made into a movie that anyone would actually pay to see.... I would expect a straight to DVD movie.

Let's not get carried away. The Wizard of Oz is an adorable film and a classic, but there is nothing remotely real looking about it. It's like watching a stage play on film. The backgrounds are clearly painted flats, the sets are super fake. The makeup looks like makeup.

And there IS a Wizard of Oz film in the works...OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. It stars James Franco as the Wizard and Mila Kunis as the witch of the west and Michele Williams as Glinda. It's more of a prequel, but still.

Make those changes and I might actually be able to watch it. Can't stand that movie.

Who the heck is flavor of the month?

Flavor of the month is a term generally used to indicate a popular person/star that is currently quite well known but will likely be replaced by someone new "next month" or whenever people become tired of seeing them over and over again. Perhaps one example that could be used is Olivia Wilde who is quite a popular actress at the present time.

That is one greatest that SHOULD NEVER EVER EVER be remade

I agree.

Of course it would be different if it was created today..just like things would be different if it was done in the 1950s or 1970s or 1980s as well. It reflects it's time as do many movies. The influences of the current time it was made are often reflected in the movies.

Judy Garland by the way had a few movies under her belt prior to this and wasn't the first choice for the role (Shirley Temple was). Judy could possibly fall into what you deem a current "flavor of the month" to be ;)

It was also a money hog and apparently failed in the theaters when it came out (meaning it didn't recoup what it cost to make it)..plenty of modern movies do that too ;)

Not to start a fight, but in a way it was kind of already remade. Remember the Wiz? The one with Micheal Jackson, Diana Ross, Nipsy Russell and many other well known black actresses/actors. Wouldn't that of been considered a remake?

For the record.. I also would love to see Johnny Depp in any movie he makes. :thumbsup2 Even him as the scarecrow. :thumbsup2

And Ted Raimi has 3 parts! (he stated in a blog a few months back, thoughIMDB only has 2 listed)
Can't wait!
My kids LOVE the Muppets Wizard of Oz, with Piggy as both the good and evil witches! :)

And this quote proves what the above poster said.

Jim Carey as the Cowardly Lion, Will Ferrel as the Tin Man. Johnny Depp as the Scarecrow. Flavor of the Month as Dorothy.

That casting needs to be tweaked:

Jim Carrey as the Scarecrow because of his rubbery physical acting abilities. I
can see him flopping around as the scarecrow.

Johnny Depp as the Tin Man because he can do melancholy and overall weird. I can picture the weird faces he'd make in the silver paint.

Will Ferrell as the Lion just because he kind of looks the part. I can see him as a big lug looking all pathetic and sad.

I'd like that cast!! Taylor swift might make a good dorothy... can she act at all? LOL

Wicked has not done to poorly on Broadway either.
Some sequels might be a good thing... the book series by L Frank Baum had some great stories... I personally liked the china people... and weren't there paper doll folks too??
