would you bring your 'own' squishy gel/foam seat cushion to use in your off site rented wheelchair? its fairly thick, probably a good 6 inches but has made a big difference when I am in it for more than few hours at a time.

I used to just grab a car blanket or throw and fold it up a few times but that has gotten real old in recent months. of all the places to lose weight it has to be my bum?! :confused3

we are flying Southwest so we each get a checked bag and I proved to myself I can pack for 2 weeks in a carry on, so I could probably justify going up to a full size suitcase..DH would use his rolling duffle and I'd take the other bag. using DME too so it's not like he has to juggle the bags and me...and if there is extra room then that just means I can get the large Olaf instead of the medium, right?!

Absolutely - because if space is no object, then there's no downside really. You'd be more comfortable, you don't have to worry about baggage fees, you don't have to worry about juggling the bags...why not take it?

I'd absolutely bring it. Even if you weren't packing more than normal, it would count as medical equipment if you either carried it separately (if it has a handle on it like some do) or in its own bag/bag only containing other medical equipment. So you could always bring it without any sort of extra baggage penalty. I assume that you get some sort of wheelchair assistance at the airports so you could just sit on it so that it's not an extra thing being carried.

Also, you might consider sitting on it on the plane. That's what I do with my cushion rather than sending it under (cold!) or sticking it in the overhead. My cushion is about 4" thick, gel/foam and contoured to keep my hips in place so it makes the flight far more comfortable. I'm 5'4"-ish and still can use the headrest, etc.

To be honest, I would consider that an essential. Frankly, you could probably carry it on with you without an issue, especially if you can sit on it on the plane.

my assistance is my husband.. I actually try to NOT use a chair in airports unless I am having REALLY bad day. I guess I am just worried it will disappear while I am on a ride.

If space were no object, absolutely. If you find it doesn't help you, you just leave it in the hotel room.

Can you get a little carry backpack for it, and just take it on the rides with you? (have DH carry it) I would worry about theft and I would also worry about rainstorms while you're on rides.

You get TWO free checked bags EACH with Southwest.

And I would consider this sort of thing to be medical equipment, which allows you to go beyond the one carryon and one smaller item that you can already carry on the plane.

When you are at the airport and resort, don't be afraid to ask for help. Porters and Bell/Luggage Service people are available, and the only pay they need is a relatively small tip! I love the MCO porters. VERY helpful.
