If someone points their finger in your face...

Depends on the person pointing the finger at me, of course. Someone I know will get a swat and a discussion, a stranger will get a step back, or more, then a call to the police. The call would be about being verbally assaulted, with the possibility of physical assault. I wouldn't just walk away - who knows what the whackadoodle would do to the next person. If there are no consequences for the whackadoodle behavior, then that behavior is reinforced and allowed to continue and possibly escalate.

Probably disagree. I'm not the world's mommy. It's not my job to correct rude, strange behavior. I do think it's always in my best interest to not escalate or bait, and stay a decent distance from strangers. :)

That's sad. I'm part of a society that takes responsibility for the community. It's not based on anything religious, just the understanding that as human beings living together we can make that community better by caring about each other and helping out as much as we can. I also couldn't live with myself if that finger-pointing whackadoodle escalated with the next person and hurt/killed that person.

I think it's a pretty big assumption that folks who are thoughtful and careful about escalating are not part of a society that cares for others.
It's always possible folks that are highly aggressive in anti-social ways may have some untreated mental illness or are substance abusers. Unless you can magically identify these issues by sight, it's best to tread lightly.
And of course, as always on the DIS, YMMV. :)

What if it's this guy:

Why would you swat it away? It's a rude thing to do, but also pretty childish and ridiculous. I think I'd roll my eyes and walk away.

If you want to freak them out, start sniffing there finger

I would never do that to someone but I can imagine many of the posters here doing that figuratively with their posts when they become unhinged at opinions different from their own.
